Hauntingly Beautiful Voice!! DIANA ANKUDINOVA - Rechenka (Age 14) Reaction 

I do not know which vocal coach you saw but she does nothing with her tongue to squeeze her vocal chords (If you saw Peter Barber then that is exactly what he says too), her tongue is flat in her mouth, she just has that voice, she is a Contralto the deep voice IS her voice, she has a big laryngeal space, her vocal cords are thicker than the average female and also her mouth (the inside space) is huge, her resonators are different. So do not fret trying to imitate her because no one can sound like her, as she said her self you have to be born like her in order to sing like her. The melismas at the end of the phrases are staple in Eastern and southern European traditional music and songs, Sinéad O'Connor maybe inspired by southern/eastern European vocalizations not the other way around. This is an ancient folk song so the tribal vibes are expected.

Diana Ankudinova was born on May 31, 2003, and in 2023 she is now 20 years old, but in this performance of Rechenka which was video recorded on May 12, 2018, when Diana was only 14 years old when she was a contestant on a vocal competition called “You Are Super”. This performance had many vocal professionals already saying Diana was displaying a low, deep, and rich sound, and her stage presence was well beyond what most other 14 year old girls were capable of. During this May 12, 2018 performance of Rechenka on “You Are Super”, people were curious about Diana’s voice. The tone and the low, deep, and resonant quality of her voice had many asking about her vocal range, so I found the following information; the previous year, in 2017 when she was 13, and a year before the “You Are Super” competition took place, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5 which puts her firmly as an Alto voice type which is low for a 13 year old girl. Diana did not have her vocal range checked again until 5 years later when she was 18 years old, during her appearance on a 9 week vocal competition called “ShowMaskGoOn” that premiered on September 25, 2021. Now, back to 2018 and “Rechenka”; for a 14 year old girl, Diana had an unusually low vocal register during her Rechenka performance. Her voice was noticeably deep, round, full and dark with a tone quality that was well beyond her years. Many vocal professionals were speculating based on this Rechenka performance that she could be a true Contralto in the making. She also had very good vocal control for a 14 year old, and her musicality was noticed by many vocal and performance professionals. Questions were being asked, and one of the most asked questions is how does she do it? How can such a young female singer achieve those low, rich, deep, profound, and resonant sounds? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to actually see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply to attribute Diana's ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning she was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than the majority of female singers. Her larynx (voice box) also appears to be larger than the majority of female singers, and her pharynx (throat) similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. But it’s more that just being born with unique vocal anatomy, Diana knows how to use it. It’s in her musicality and stage presence. It is in her ability to step into and assume a character on stage. It’s in her ability to capture the audience and not just sing them a song, she can and does actually communicate with the audience on a personal level. Diana Ankudinova also sang these 3 additional cover songs during the 2018 season competition of “You Are Super” you should really listen to. I'll recount this as best as a foreigner can from reading a few autotranslated comments as well as what some english speaking russians have talked about in the comments page of this video and it's many reactions: Igor Krutoy and Cº judges had requested that Diana sing something in russian, probably expecting a cover of some popular russian music, as to the date she had done foreign songs, like Derniere Dance, on this show. What they got was this, which is a very old, tribal, throwback to the very origins of the russian people, and a well known piece. It's sung in old russian if I'm not mystaken. To this day this very performance is considered the best child performance ever made in a talent show in Russia. To me it's special because at this age her voice had not yet dropped fully, as it does to all of us in puberty, and you have this exquisite mix of that young child voice and her rich deep natural tones which is different to her adult voice. Not better but different. She goes both lower and higher now, but her natural tone is lower. You can tell the judges were stunned. It's just a talent show, but what she sometimes brings is high art. For me, this, Can't Help Falling in Love and her recently done cover of the theme song from Dune, are the three most important performances to get her fully as an artist. Everything is good, don't get me wrong, but these song give us a fairly complete view. At least until she takes us somewhere else, she is only 20, and I have the feeling she is not done surprising us just yet. Voice for the ages.

Diana's latest collaboration is with a full orchestra performing the theme song from the movie "Dune". This is a composition by Hans Zimmer who is famous for his very successful and innovative movie theme compositions. Wonderful reaction! There are many directions you can go from here with Diana. Very recently she sang with an orchestra doing a tribute to Hans Zimmer. She sang 2 songs - "No Time You Die" and a song from the soundtrack of Dune. I suggest you listen to both: the Dune song is the tribal sound you like (in spades), and the James Bond song shows that she also has a large repertoire of non-tribal songs. Honestly, I think it’s largely pointless trying to figure out how she sings. I’ve seen so many people who think they’ve figured it all out but they all formed their own different theories, so there’s no real way to know who among them is “correct”. One vocal coach will say she pulls her tongue back and another will point out her perfectly natural tongue position. Someone will label her a mezzo-soprano and another person calls her a contralto. Only Diana herself understands fully how she sings. Based on interviews, I can tell you for sure that it mostly comes down to anatomy. Is it possible to force yourself to sound like her? Probably, by moving around stuff in your throat, but it would never sound as natural or comfortable as it does for her. She really is just a unique singer

She is sad because she has no father or mother to bless her in such a day so she goes to sit by a little river to ask its blessings instead as water sources and water flows had magics and powers. 2:19 That grunt brings the voice of the spirits of nature and of her ancestors asking "why you are not smiling?" 3:22 Not yodel but something related to it. That is a doble glottal hammering vibrato that brings to our minds the greeting/farewell to the spirits inherited from Turkic/Tengrenist traditions in certain muslim tribes in the ancient Turan to pay homage to the ancestors and spirits of nature. In Spanish I know it as "hammering vibrato" or "glottal vibrato". In Iran I heard they call it "che-che". It is not yodeling but an ethnic technique relative to yodeling but needs more control on the notes you sing than in yodeling. "Rechenka" = the little river.......this is a Russian folk song of an orphaned girl (touching, as Diana spent time in a Russian orphanage) who goes to the river (the boundary between the living and the dead) to ask her deceased Mother's blessing for her upcoming marriage.
