While this season does not feel like Red Dwarf at all, most of the humour still works for me and this scene is no exception. It’s not rolling on the floor laughing but it’s not too far off.

Among 7 and 8's issues I feel like they flanderized Kryten and turned him into a whining neurotic imbecile. Like, why would a sanitation droid not know what a period is?

I want my red dwarf! About 15 years back PBS was doing a pledge drive with a marathon of red dwarf as the bait saying if you want to ensure that such shows remain on PBS be sure to donate. For the only time ever I donated $60. About 8 or 9 years later I caught one episode they happened to play about 4am and that'd what my $60 bought
@robinlillian9471

The episodes have been available on DVD for years. Should have spent your $60 on some of that. You still can get them.

@@robinlillian9471 That does not help. The pledge drive seem deceptive but maybe PBS was expecting more $$ during that marathon, hence they did not buy another season of RD. Contracts can be xx number of showings. A pledge drive gives the station feedback. As for Jim's 4 AM play, I understand his pain, but there may have been other episodes he missed in that month/season of broadcasts. A season on DVD is expensive. Oh to own RD, Keeping up appearances, and a few more would break the bank

If you think that's bad, French girls used to be slapped across the face after announcing their first period to their mother "for good luck" in the 90s. The strange practice started because of a stupid romantic comedy with Sophie Marceau, that influenced dumb single mothers into adopting this made-up tradition.

This season was the end for this show unfortunately. It still had some funny moments, but introducing Kochanski and bringing back the crew utterly ruined it. The whole premise that they were 4 idiots alone trying to get by in deep space was what made it fun.
@russellharrell2747
@russellharrell2747 2 года назад
The first two seasons had quite a few flashbacks to before the accident and even included a trip back in time. Seeing the old crew took away a lot of the hopelessness of the situation.
@merkaba48
@merkaba48 2 года назад
I agree, but I think there's a difference with season 8 (?), which is that the crew came back and _stayed_. Red Dwarf was always good at introducing temporary characters on a per-episode basis, as they provided fuel for comedic situations for the main cast to get into - but once they stuck around episode after episode it felt very...undwarfy. It limited the wild situations they could get into each episode, or at least, forced them all to revolve around the revived crew. Also I quite enjoyed the idea that Rimmer and Lister were two oddballs on an otherwise fairly straight ship, but they made the crew themselves quite oddballish and it felt like thinning the sauce. Though I think having the crew back was the least of the issues in that season, the jokes just weren't of the calibre they used to be.

@@merkaba48 I do enjoy the earlier seasons and would agree that having the crew permanently back should have been handled differently.

Arnold Rimmer Thanks Arnold. The last decent sketch comedy on the BBC The League of Gentlemen. That is how dead sketch comedy is. I saw them last year and still excellent. I pick and choose my gigs now but only 3 or 4 years ago I could go out most nights and see a decent gig. Those days are long gone. At least Dave has Red Dwarf and some good game shows Taskmaster for example but BBC2 once the home of sketch comedy, Monty Python, Not the Nine o Clock News, Paul and Pauline Calf, Harry Enfield, Fast Show and The League just never been replaced. Also where have all the sit-coms gone? BBC has become a laughter free zone.

Red Dwarf is a great show but his is garbage, getting in Kochanski and losing Rimmer was an epic disaster. The early seasons were epic, last couple seasons have been strong too, during this spell it was awful
@tjfSIM
@tjfSIM 4 года назад
Absolutely agree. Rimmer was greatly missed during this period (no pun intended) - the whole concept of red dwarf was built around the fractious relationship between Lister and Rimmer. If you take one out of the equation, it ceases to have any real point. Thankfully it has returned to form in the more recent series :)

Yeah, I don’t get why they thought they needed Kochanski to replace Rimmer - wouldn’t it have been funnier to have Lister, Cat and Kryten getting up to mischief on their own without him?
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 2 года назад
They couldn't do anything about Rimmer (Chris Barrie). He was off shooting another TV series The Brittas Empire and I think he was burned out on Red Dwarf. I agree that Series 7 and 8 were NOT great Red Dwarf. Then again, I don't think the series has been the same since Series 6. Like The Simpsons, Red Dwarf peaked early! The Simpsons has arguably run 20 years too long. Red Dwarf has had long breaks in production between Series.
