This year Tudor fans were hoping for a slimmer, smaller GMT in a Black Bay 58 39 mm case. Instead, What was released at Watches and Wonders, was the same GMT but with a different dial colour. Thank you to WATCHFINDER I have one of these in to review and we have to ask the question 'Does Bigger Mean Better?' How does this GMT wear on the wrist and do I recommend it to you?
Let's get into it!

I bought this exact watch on the fabric strap for my first ever swiss watch! I have a large wrist and with the fabric strap it works well for me! I personally love the large size and the water resistance because to me this is an adventure watch! Take it traveling with you and it will take whatever you throw at it! I can definitely understand why some would think it's too thick but I love mine!

It’s not just the thickness. The slab sides and lack of sloped bezel makes it look even thicker. 14mm isn’t a problem with the proper case and bezel shape

Yeah , it’s a vintage case shape though. Fine on a Pelagos however that’s a slab to! This watch goes for the vintage look therefore it shouldn’t be that thick!;)

So true. I've got a watch with a Valjoux 7750 in it, very thick watch. Probably thicker than this. But it has curves and bevels, not this slab sided nonsense. Although, to be fair, I would rock a Tudor GMT Opaline with no worries at all!

@Hrethgir

@@AndyNick211 Not for everyone. Like I said, I've got a Longines with a Valjoux 7750, and I just measured it at 14mm thick, and it doesn't give me any issues. The weight is a bigger factor than the thickness, its something like 165 g sized for my 7" wrist. But still, I wear it with no issues. Case has a nice bevel and alternating brushed and polished surfaces, along with a slim bezel and domed sapphire crystal, so it doesn't have the blatantly thick look the Tudor slab sides give you.

They could probably trim 1mm with WR but the movement is still 7.5mm thick. The standard Tudor three hander is 6.5mm thick. For reference the new Miyota 9075 is 4.95 mm in comparison. I couldn't find a height for the Rolex 3285 but being that the GMT Master II is only 12mm it must be at least as thin as the MT5402 if not thinner.

It kind of looks like they pieced together a GMT with components they had lying around. Just seems to be lacking a cohesive design. Needs the new style crown and clasp, smaller in every dimension and sort out the scaling of the dial furniture, bulkier handset and hour markers. I agree about the green lume and dial clash a bit too.

The GMT movement used in this watch is 1 mm thicker than a standard Tudor 41 movement. If you take the regular BB 41 with it's 14,75 mm overall thickness and take the GMT with it's 14,5 mm thickness even though the GMT movement is thicker, it's not a bad deal. But sure, they could have made it overall thinner.

My friend took a photo of his BB GMT with some Wensleydale cheese that he bought specially. It’s become a meme between the two of us since I now have the same watch. 😂 In seriousness I was quite worried about the size before I purchased. I thoroughly recommend trying a 54, 58, METAS, and GMT/41-heritage for size before deciding. On my 7.5 inch (19cm) wrist 100+kg body🎅 even the 58 was a little dainty. I really respect how you qualify your advice/opinions by reminding us that these choices are personal. Love your videos, keep em coming! 🎉

I think we would all love to see a slimmer BB GMT including me. I think this is a thicker or more perceived watch for a couple of reasons. It probably used a modified in house BB 41 movement (that is quite a beefy movement to start with) and added the GMT so there are possibly two extra levels of mechanics, one to drive the GMT central pinion and another to make room for the GMT hand, there maybe more to cater for the hour jump and date forward and reverse complication. Tudor would need to redesign the movement to make it thinner. My single cell brain (it used to be two cells but one died after a pint some years ago) would guess that Tudor skunkworks are already developing thinner more accurate and reliable movement behind the scenes so let's hope that this work is quite advanced as lots of us have been asking for slimmer in house movement models for a while. Oh and the other reason is the BB case design using slab sides. Anyway for now I'm happy with my BB GMT black dial on my 7" wrist. Oddly it doesn't look that thick when not viewed down the wrist but from the hand.
@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR
@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Год назад
Hahahaha thank you for watching my friend! Unfortunately with this watch. It’s made to look like it was made in the 50’s /60’s . Watches weren’t that big back then and so never had to deal with slab sides . The case can’t be shaped differently because it’s vintage;) so it’s the movement and the WR that determine the size. It could be thinned and it will GUARENTEE it!;)
@MarketingGuy
@MarketingGuy Год назад
@anthonystevens8683 The movement is not the classic BB41 version (MT5402) with an additional GMT module. The standard BB41 movement is 6,5mm thick in a 14,75mm thick watch. The GMT function in the MT5652 movement is completely integrated. The movement is only slightly thicker with 7,5mm, but the Tudor GMT is overall only 14,5 mm thick. So they archived to make a case with a thicker GMT movement slightly smaller than the standard version.
@anthonystevens8683
@anthonystevens8683 Год назад
@@MarketingGuy Many thanks for the clarification. The MT5402 is used in the BB58, the MT5602 is used in the classic but is also 6.5mm thick. You are correct that the GMT has an integrated GMT complication and not a modular design, apologies if I didn't make that clear but thankyou for pointing it out. I may be completely wrong but (looking at the movements) the MT5652 architecture would have been likely used as a base design for the GMT to reuse the time keeping and escapement parts and integrating the GMT bits and bobs into the design. Again you are correct that the GMT is actually thinner than the BB41 classic, I didn't know that even though the GMT has a thicker movement. I did read that Tudor were placing dials closer to the crystal in the same way that they did with the BB panda (and reverse panda) chronograph a year or so ago. Once again many thanks for your reply. Much appreciated, I'm more than happy to be corrected and will freely admit when I'm wrong.

Omega slip streamed a quick adjust clasp on the Moonwatch, so we know it can be done. Come on, Tudor! I also have a 2018 Seamaster 300 and got to admit I wear the Seamaster a lot more, find the braclet nicer and the watch is just lighter. Kind of falling out of love with my GMT these days.

I'm a fan of smaller watches but also a massive fan of tudor. I have eight of them. However, a watch only looks too big if you have a little wrist. I have an eight inch wrist and my black dial Tudor BB GMT looks fine. That said I prefer wearing my Pro and 58 which are slightly smaller. Oh yes... also, switch the steel bracelet off the GMT and wear a black and red waterproof strap.

i mean, at least there is still a tudor gmt for the smaller wrist in the black bay pro. yeah you dont have the rotating bezel but the second hand looks coooler in my opinioooohhhh that thickness is, yeah... hmmm

As far as GMTs go, I’ve owned a Rolex GMT master II, and currently own a Rolex explorer 2 and the Steinhart 1655 ripoff. I also owned the tutor GMT. I wanted to love that watch more than any watch ever. But there’s a reason why literally everybody says it’s too big. Because it’s too big. The bracelet never fit right, irritated my wrist and the watch itself felt like a brick on my wrist. Additionally, I personally felt the hands needed to be thicker and the indices needed to be a little bit larger to accommodate the amount of space on the dial. It would make it much more legible. But wearing It was literally horrific. I sold it after owning it less than a month. Say what you want but the watch is just too big for the vast majority out there. It’s Cliche, but a black bay 58 size GMT would pretty much be perfect. If it ever comes…

I owned one of the original BBGMT's and really loved it once I put it on an Artem sailcloth strap. The issue I had was that the movement was trash on not 1 but 2 of them (my AD swapped out the first one for me due to the date issue and then the 2nd one had the same date issue... Tudor service center lost my second one and so I opted for an Omega). I miss this watch and can't help but think that WHEN Tudor gives this the BB58 treatment it will be a huge hit for them.

Well, I own the black dial GMT and the BB58 and..... would I like it 2-3mm thinner? Who wouldn't... 🤷 But would I ditch it? Does it feel like a cheap hom? Absolutely not. I'll never have GMT Master money and it's 90% of that watch for waaay less money (and you can actually buy one). But then I do have a 7.25imch wrist, and doubt it'd work on any wrist smaller..... I went into my AD to 'eliminate it', put it on, and immediately forked over my cash. And 2yrs on don't regret it. And if I rocked up to P Newman's dinner party, I'd have a BB58 on leather on wrist 😁 BTW the GMT DOES wear smaller on the leather (which I bought on a total whim but really works).....

Was waiting for your comment Gary!! Absolutely love that you have both!!! And I love your love for it!! Just imo a GMT mechanical automatic doesn’t have to be 15mm thick but it does need to if it’s gonna distinguish itself from a BB58 GMT!!!!! If you know what mean!!!! Cheers Gary!!!

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I get what you're saying. No problems my friend! I agree re the thickness,. I just forgive it the girth because it's so good everywhere else.... Mind it could be headed to Watchfinder if/when a 58 GMT turns up... 😁 That 58 is going nowhere.... Still the best watch they've made in many a year!

If I am happy with Jane’s Cameron and my Tudor Chrono🐼 then I will be happy with this dude. It’s even more beautiful 😍. Wile I am saving for it, it would be great if they release a slimmer 41mm with adjustment claspe.

I have the black bay gmt (black) I got a year ago so heres my experience. My wrist 6.25-6.5 (depending on weather) and.... I love wearing this watch! Is it big? yes it is but my wrist is a bit broad so the lugs don't over hang. IMO the wrist circumference is not a good metric to go by, you need to honestly wear it. Recently (a few days ago) I went to checkout the blackbay 54 and oh my god that thing is extremely dainty! Just another confirmation that I selected the right tudor. If anyone is on the fence I highly suggest you go in person and wear it and make a decision. Don't base it of your wrist circumference size and call it a day.

It looks a little clunky, I agree a thinner case would make all the difference, as would the removal of the crown tube which they have done on the Metas red BB.

It would be nice if it were a few millimeters thinner, but I wouldn't change the diameter. I don't really understand the whole small watch craze going on right now. Just give me something that fits my wrist. Anywhere between 40-43mm works great. Anything smaller than that, and it looks like a woman's watch.

I just watched your video and I absolutely loved it! I found your presentation to be incredibly informative and engaging. You did a great job of breaking down complex concepts into easy-to-understand terms. I also appreciated the humor and personal anecdotes that you sprinkled throughout the video. It made the content more relatable and enjoyable. You're one of the few RU-vidrs who I can consistently count on to deliver high-quality content. Keep up the great work! Another thing I don't like on this GMT design is that the GMT hand covers the date window. This is one of the reasons I went with the Longines Zulu Time. However that choice was mainly based on the overall design and comfort.

must agree about the hands - I am not a fan of the snowflake at all anymore and think they would do very well to have something else for non-divers (or even the divers, haha!) .... and the Ranger ... They'll sell this model until they run out of BB Heritage cases and then they'll switch to a smaller case. For me the 24h hand is too long, i miss an opaline ring around the stem tunnel, the minute markers should be dark blue instead of black and BGW9 would be my preferred lume here. You're right about the green lume: meh.

Great show as always MWC! This watch is stunning and you can’t beat an aluminium bezel insert but the proportions just seem a bit off. As you said, face on it looks great but from any other angle that thickness is too much for me. Those slab sides don’t help either. I’m sure these will sell very well and be enjoyed by loads of people (and rightly so) but it’s a bit disappointing that an in house movement from a brand as prestigious as Tudor can only fit in an case this size. I’ve been looking at some automatic chronographs which have a Sellita SW500 and they are all broad in diameter and chunky. I’d prefer more manageable dimensions but the Sellita is an off the shelf and relatively affordable movement so I can understand that concessions have been made. With this Tudor it feels like it should be possible to get those dimensions down a bit. Surely Rolex/Tudor aren’t worried about cannibalising the GMT-Master II market? Putting availability aside the price difference is big enough that nobody who can afford it would buy a Black Bay GMT over a GMT-Master II, right? As you said, I’m sure a a Black Bay 58 sized GMT is coming at some point, these are just an appetiser!

My personal opinion no offense to the die hard Tudor fans. The watch should have been reissued with a 39mm to 40mm case and a lumed insert bezel to go along with the lumed gmt hand with a thinner case as well. The watch is sweet,but even more sweeter slightly smaller and thinner. For real! Come on Tudor listen to the people for a change and stop being stubborn.

Okay but what about people who have bigger wrists and like bigger watches? Tudor should make a 38mm for those that liken smaller watches and 42mm for people like myself with bigger wrists who like a big watches. They are never going to please everyone with only one case size….

Commenting only a few seconds into the video with a forethought. I have the OG black dial version of the BB GMT. I purchased it after a few months wait with my local AD. Yes it’s big. I have a 7.25in wrist and it’s my biggest watch. Probably the thickest too. All things considered, I still get excited to put this thing on. This and my seiko flighty have become my two travel watches (seiko for when I’m out at night or in a so-so area, and Tudor for everything else). I also think my purchase of this watch helped with my candidacy for a submariner which I received the call for a few months later. At the end of the day, my Tudor puts the same smile on my face as the subbie. And it will always be my first “nice watch”. Even though she’s thicc, no complaints here😄

Addition at 2 min in. Shoutout to Watchfinder for the loaner review watch. That’s freaking great. Also, the slab sides are big for sure. I do wonder if Tudor could have thickened (lol) the depth of the bevel on the top of the case sides, not just the bottom. This would certainly make the watch with its thick movement appear thinner
