Very inventive shaft drive! Now, I’m sure you can build an enclosed 6-speed transmission to go with that as well!

With the chainless bike, I was half expecting some sort of prank, where you drop a bike chain in front of a occupied park bench and just keep going. Or maybe stop, pick it up, and then just keep it in your hand as you ride away.

Man I got a question: I’ve seen in this video a lot of assembling gears on shaft welding directly the gear to the shaft. You made the cuts of the gears by hand and you put the gear on the shaft in the same way. What I don’t understand is how you align the center of the gear with the center of the shaft. Usually when this alignment is missing the work become a real mess….
@Nefertiti0403
@Nefertiti0403 Год назад
I don’t understand any of this but it makes sense. Why don’t they just build bikes without the gears? Must be a reason
@JohnR31415
@JohnR31415 Год назад
@@Nefertiti0403 they do - single speed and fixed gear bikes are quite common.
@lorenzoghinelli7018
@lorenzoghinelli7018 Год назад
@@Nefertiti0403 Just think about Beijing’s popular bikes…. Also in Italy, where I come from, most of the traditional bikes got a single gear. The matter is how this gear is coupled with the shaft.

How do you stop pedaling in the 1st video? you removed the cricket...
@jayrose6312
@jayrose6312 Год назад
Probably would have to use a front brake… very carefully! LOL 😂 Actually, I was thinking that braking is totally impossible on the second video as it’s a multi-speed bike and the front brakes would no longer be able to clamp-down as the tire-side surface area was removed. It’s a good engineering challenge to try to figure out a solution though!
@markjulianoriginalhooli2217
Have you conquered the flex factor? What about the exposed grease/lube attracting abrasives?
@jayrose6312
@jayrose6312 Год назад
Good point, but it was more for entertainment and proof of concept. I’m sure that it could be easily enclosed if it was something that ever went into production.

I've seen driveshaft models before and as innovate as they appear, they really are not that practical for every day use... And it is in the open, so it is very susceptible to debris from the environment.

And you have one, one, gear to handle everything? Hills? Rough terrain? There's a reason that bikes use chains so they can use multiple gears.

Seems like a lot of work just to make something that will almost certainly fall apart the moment you out any major pressure on it. Why do you think chains are used instead of this gear method? The very simple reason that chains don't flex when you put pressure on them. They are designed in such a way as to allow the rider to peddle with the least amount of effort. And then, to make them even easier, James Starly (or Starling, I forget right now), a coventry based bicycle inventor/builder, invented the differential gear, that is still used to this day in both bike manufacturers and petrol/diesel powered cars.

Very nice. I do have one question. Why on God's Earth do people still put background music on their videos that sounds like it was pulled from a sleazy 1970's era soft core porn movie? No music is better than what 99-44/100% of what people use.
