I live in B'nai B'rith senior citizen housing, there was a man name Steve who lived here and had major health issues, he did not get an aide when he came home from the hospital, his family did not really help that much, I asked him if he needed help to clean his apartment, wash dishes, he said no at first and than he called me and said yes, I went there and washed floors, cleaned stove, counters, etc., and then I went a 2nd time, my neighbors at B'nai B'rith told me NOT to help him I almost listened to them, but glad I did NOT, he passed away 2 weeks ago.

My Father passed away when I was a small child and my mother raised my sister and I on her own. A situation arose once in which I falsely accused her of being selfish. To which she said..... It may appear that way to you, but in this situation I have to put myself first so I can stay strong and healthy for you and your sister. And she was absolutely correct. The reason I mention this is because she had that strong survival instinct of looking out for number 1, as a means of taking care of us. She was an amazing lady. RIP Mom ♥️

This is a very important lesson! As a woman who believes my greatest worth is in helping others, I had to learn that I’m not much good to others if I don’t take care of myself. Self-care used to sound selfish to me, but now I see it’s necessary. I heard someone say that on an airplane, they tell you to put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others put theirs on, for a reason. You can’t help if you are unconscious. That finally helped me understand this concept.

A few years ago I finally figured out what my purpose in life is, why I came to Earth. It is something I have been doing from as far back as I can remember, it is to shame bad behavior. and the people who are guilty of it. Example: about 40 years ago my older sister was bragging how she conned an old lady into buying something she didn't want; she wanted the money to play poker. it took some coercion but the old lady caved. In front of the whole card table I said 'shame on you." She told me it was none of my business. I told her that she made it my business, if you don't want to be criticized then don't tell on yourself. If you tell me something that bothers me then you make it my business.

Rabbi, I’m very very sorry your grandfather was tortured. My great grandmother was a Romanian practicing Jew. We know what happened in Romania to Jews. Whatever happened I shall never know because my family changed our last names, moved to Canada, and nobody even knows what our real name is. I assume whatever caused such drastic action it involved some trauma. Peace to you Rabbi. Yes, I used to think it was selfish to take care of myself, if others needed care. Now, there have been times I have been unable to help those closest to me, because I failed to take care of myself, in the past. It’s a delicate balance. Self-care isn’t optional. The term had a negative connotation for me, because of people I have heard, saying that they have to engage in retail therapy and take lavish vacations, because “self-care.” I misunderstood the concept because, sometimes, it is taken too far.

It's just the love born from the heart towards our Creator as well as for other human beings. If not, the desire to give a hand is not in the heart. Very simple. There are people out there that are truly givers of love and are capable of compassion. When we leave this world and our bodies we don't take anything material with us. When we learn this lesson then we are at peace and comfort ourselves in giving others.

I'm not the most or least selfish person in the average room, somewhere in the middle I think. But I am moving in the direction of selflessness because I'm increasingly become aware that it's all that will make me happy. I'm increasingly aware of the ways my egotistical behavior bites me is the a**. A collective obedience to conditional love seems quite self-destructive to me in the long-term, and I think we are approaching the end of that long-term cycle.

Rabbi, I have been told of different types of practical giving. 1. Giving, expecting the l/friend will resepacate at some time in your need. 2. Giving in order to get 2. Giving with no expectation of return. BUT this to be done with ONLY EXTRA income, energy and resourses. Rabbi will you comment on this? Also As is my personality, the first year of Covid I gave sacraficially to others. Some of these are wealthy financially, physically and with additional help and support. Almost always they neglected to pay me for purches or even figured to avoid repaying me in money, physically & emotional support. This was constant especially in the jewush community) in my town of senior citezens where the mantra is "Take care of yourself". I feel like I was a fool. Rabbi there were some realy terrible things. Not like hurting my feelings. Serious times when I needed help in life and death issues. I live alone and have no family. Not even a visit or phone call. Rabbi my entire soul has changed. Yes, I still give a lunch sac to the homeless. Others are truly in need. For those people, sometimesI find a way for them to give to others. I would love to share that story but not in public because it might misunderstood.

Having a purpose keeps you from being selfish. I have never heard that before. I am assuming that this means having a purpose keeps you from focusing on yourself and your problems. I think my family and I are going to start focusing on having and working for our purpose. Great lecture. I saw another one of Rabbi Jacobson's videos where he said that therapy without the bible as a reference is no good. I totally agree. The New Testament says that the purpose of the Old T. is to teach us the difference between good and evil. With the way the world is right now, I would have a hard time trusting a therapist if they did not have a through understanding and belief in the old testament. The issue is I am not Jewish, so I do not know if my family or I could see a Jewish counselor, and even if we could the closest Jewish counselor to me is 2.5 hours away.

Do you really wanna be like everyone else? Be your own person. Everyone needs that one person to give kindness it might change their whole future, even if there isn't anything to be gained in return and especially if no one is looking. It's the greatest gift you can give, which may be their life. To show them there is hope.

Thank you Rabbi. I needed this one today. To be upright in a crooked world is man's calling. Thank you HaShem for not making me a woman.

If not for a woman you wouldn't have even been born - would you say this to your mother? God made both - everything on this earth and our universe shows glimps' of duality. Even in your own nature you have femine and masculine aspects - one compliments the other - its all about balance - we need both. This by no means is an admonishment, but is meant to give you an opportunity to explore further and go deeper.

@@deeannabratton9991 As a Jewish man the reason we say that. Jewish men have many more commands to follow. We are thankful for that. Please do not assume without knowing on Rabbis wall. And yes I would say it to my mother and have.

@@deeannabratton9991 I know not one Jewish man that does not say this. We are thankful not anti women. So yes duality is in everything yet Jewish men feel no shame for being thankful for commands.

I would be interested in hearing Rabbi teach on this expression… to explain the philosophy. From a non Orthodox, non Jewish perspective, my first thought is that if feels misogynistic… most women I know multitask and bear far more than half the responsibilities of sustaining the financial and emotional well-being of their families.

@@quantumspirit8439 We hold our women in the highest of regards. The comment is 100% about the blessing of commands and less about women as a people. Even I would appreciate that video. Have a wonderful day!
