Those black lines are actually a mixtures of all of the colors represented by the numbers. Each color prints a number, and a grid of lines. The lines overlay to make them look black. If one of the colors is not aligned properly, you will see that color fringing on the outside of the dark line created by the other colors. The numbers are there to verify the print is consistent, and the color accuracy is correct. Lego utilizes a printing system known as pad printing, or "tampo", where a design is silk screened onto a template, the pad presses onto the template transferring the ink to the soft pad, and then stamping the pad onto the part, transferring the ink to the part. These colors are then overlayed (hence the need for accurate alignment on each step of the printing process) to create the image we see on the parts. The benefit to using Pad Printing, is that the pad can be made in various shapes to better contour the parts that are being printed on to guarantee full coverage of the part. Pad Printing is used on everything from Lego, to dishware, to even mainline Hotwheel cars. However, in some cases, there has been a switch to Direct to Object ink jet printing replacing Tampo. Hotwheels, for example, uses direct to object printing for its premium line cars, so they can print all the sides of the car in a single pass, instead of the multiple passes required to build up the detail in a tampo setup.

i used to have a minifigure which they gave to my dad when he went to a lego factory, and now that i remember it was actually quite rare and it had the name of a worker or something like that written on its back

profits would skyrocket if they made a set featuring that minifig head somehow
