My stand on Bunny Girl senpai was always- "There's no reason to watch it if you've already seen Monogatari." And I said this whole recognising the show's merits. It's just that Monogatari did it better. Now, after watching this, I've put off recommending this show to people who have seen Haruhi as well.
I wouldn't say no reason because someone could watch Monogatari but not like how it handles certain characters or jokes. But I will agree that if you love Monogatari, then you're not going to get much out of this anime that you didn't already get out of that one. Still though, I think of Bunny Girl Senpai as a nice comfort show. As for Haruhi, I'm not the biggest moe guy and I like most of the Bunny Girl cast more than Kyon and company. I think Haruhi's movie was better than the Bunny Girl movie though.
very good video, honestly I'm a fan of all 3, but bunny girl senpai will always have a more special place in my heart, I feel that despite the presence of the supernatural it's the one with the most realistic approach of the 3, Monogatari uses a lot of symbolism, Haruhi uses a lot of hyperbole, while AoButa offers an aspect closer to reality, As a girl, I could easily identify with each of the female characters in AoButa, as the themes dealt with are very close to what we experience every day (in this sense, it's similar to Oregairu); There's also a drama comparable to Clannad (and the MCs are very similar); in terms of storytelling in Light Novels, I feel a certain "Zaregoto vibe" in certain characters and events... bunny girl senpai is a coktail made up of different works that I love, so the mix is perfect for me and offers me everything I'm looking for in fiction.
I think there is also some Oregairu since a lot of the stories themes is baded off the atmosphere and social pressures as well as a protag that reads the air while also attenpted to subvert it.
The concept is good, and I respect the sheer audacity, but the execution was bad. It's storytelling purely for the sake of storytelling-forgoing any semblance of entertainment.
This show was my gateway into Monogatary series. And even though in some aspects I think Monogatary is superior, Bunny Girl Senpai will still be one of my favourite shows of all time. Buuut, if I'm being honest, the movie tried a bit too hard to be the Disappearance of Haruki Sudzumia, and I felt that it fell flat for me exactely for that reason.
I never felt Bunny Girl was like a Monogatari clone, in my eyes Ive always felt it was like a work from, KEY such as Kanon, Air and Clannad which Monogatari is just the same as them
