Head West and see the Grand Canyon, and the Pacific coast. Beautiful nature.

The difficult part of visiting such an epic city is the amount of things to see and do. It depends on if you're there for history, there for culture, there for art, there for the architecture, there for the food, etc. Given your French nationality, it seems a shame that you didn't make it over to Liberty Island to see Gustave Eiffel's work on the gift to America. I suppose there's always another time you can visit and I hope it's a pleasant experience for you. Thanks for bringing us along!

I think your assessment of NYC was “spot on” Marie. As someone who grew up just outside of it, having easy access to it was wonderful - there’s just so much to do and see, but it is à physically draining place - the size, the noise, etc. It always took me a day to recover from a day spent in NYC! There are places to escape to : South Street Seaport, Central Park, the Cloisters way uptown (one of my favorite spots to escape to). In the end, I’m glad you enjoyed your visit there. When you get a chance to visit again, the ideal guide would be a 20-30 yo student living in NYC to take you to all the places that someone your age would enjoy.

The yellow cabs you saw on Law and Order (Ford Crown Victoria) were predominant in the city for a very long time, but they've been steadily replaced over the past 20 years. They're actually former police vehicles, so they have great engine power and a somewhat rough ride - especially if the cab company isn't maintaining them properly. Ford stopped producing the Crown Victoria in 2010 and cabs have increasingly gone hybrid (which makes sense in NYC) and other smaller car models. You also see fewer cabs in NYC as Uber has taken a major bite out of the sector - the medallions which function as a license to have an official cab in NYC used to be worth well over a million dollars but their value has plummeted, putting a lot of cabbies who invested in a medallion in bankruptcy. As someone who lived in NYC for 8 years it hurt my heart a bit to see that you got Burger King and Dave and Busters for food. I get it might not be as important to you, but imagine if someone's only meal in Paris was McDonald's. I get that you're back already, but for next time it's worth a little more forethought.

Great video Marie. I was in New York in September, my favorite city in the world. I have been 3 times now travelling from England and I keep going back. I love it there. If you ever go back, i highly recommend going to the The Summit which is next to Grand Central Station. The observation deck is simply incredible and has close up views of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. You can also stand on a glass floor looking down onto the streets of Manhattan which is amazing. I hope you enjoyed NYC and get to go back for a longer stay.

Addendum: I think the way I would sum up NYC ... a _fascinating_ place to visit, even repeatedly - but *not* a place I would _ever_ *want* to live! I've visited there a number of times, and probably have spent - altogether - about 5 or 6 days wandering around it, on foot ... and like Washington D.C., there's *always* more to see!

I certainly wish I could have met you while you were here in the states.. maybe next time but I’m really glad you were able to come visit and see how we live on this side of the world and glad thus far you have enjoyed your trips to each city so far.. can’t wait to see the rest of your journey.. sending love from a North Carolina fan ❤️

As an American, I still haven't been to NYC, so you beat me to it Marie! I am definitely a countryside boy myself, so I've never felt much of a draw to go there, but it would be fun to experience someday. I'm glad you were able to see it and have a fun day! ♥️

Greetings, Marie. Lived in NYC for a few years in mid-late 1980s. Worked one block East of the World Trade Center (WTC). Would eat my lunch in this little park called Zuccotti. Sitting there marveling at all the buildings and people around me, but especially the two towers of the WTC. Occasionally would go to the rooftop of the South tower and enjoy the amazing view. A little surprised but very glad to hear you would like to go back to NYC. The more time I spent there the more I became involved in the city and all of the amazing culture it has to offer. Loved every minute I lived there! Surprised we did not see you visit France's greatest gift to the city: The Statue of Liberty. Were you able to visit it or at least see it? Great video. Here is a tip from a pro. Fly into Flagstaff Arizona. Spend a week or two exploring. Everything you could ever want nature wise is within driving distance. Especially, take a trip to the Grand Canyon.

I agree with you that I like to visit large cities like NY but I could not live there either. I like the country with nature, quiet, and trees and animals. Also, the space. But I do like visiting large cities for all the reasons you mention. They are interesting. If you come back visit Charleston SC and Savannah GA. They are close to one another and smaller, and have more trees. Both are beautiful too. Enjoying your videos.

Having traveled a bit, the concrete jungle is just not my thing. Give me quiet beaches and peaceful mountains over the big city every time. Suppose that’s why I just got back from Kodiak, Alaska! Now there’s a place you should visit!

Bonjour Marie; as a native New Yorker, I'm impressed that you were able to cover so much ground on your visit. Still so much more to see: Central Park, Greenwich Village, the UN, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History, Chinatown and the Lower East Side, Bronx Zoo, Coney Island---really so very much. Plus nightlife>>no way to cover it all, even in a week. Enjoy your next trip here!

Lol there were two yellow taxis in the frame when you asked where the taxis were. They just aren't Crown Victorias anymore lol. They tend to be more like Priuses or minivans. But still yellow. And you can still stand on the curb and hail a cab. There are fewer since ride share apps came along. (You don't see the sea of yellow cabs like you used to) But there are still plenty.

It is interesting seeing my "home town" through the eyes of another. My grandfather worked in the Empire State Building for many years. He was an insurance salesman for New York Life. My dad worked for 30+ years for the New York Times. You should have seen Times Square in the 70s. So different from what it is now. It was very gritty, very authentic, very New York. The smells, the sounds, yes all of it...your video reminded me of all of that. The World Trade Center Memorial- for us it is a cemetery. I couldn't go there until 20 years after, it was too painful. That part of the video made me cry a bit. The taxis- yes with and S on the end- the ones from TV were Ford Crown Victoria models. Ford stopped making the Crown Vic in 2013 I think, so by the time of your visit they are almost all gone. Almost all the police cars for many years were the same model... How I met Your Mother is not a real New York show. It is a Hollywood production and any real New Yorker who sees that show, and some others, Seinfeld is also much the same, as soon as you see a street scene, you think "that's not New York" Anyway- a nice video. I just discovered you, I'll follow more of what you do. Very nice production on the video.

Interesting you know what a Gordon Setter is. Not many people do. My grandfather had two, Bingo and Mark, his hunting dogs. They were great dogs. Pretty rare these days I think I've seen one in thirty years or so. Beautiful animals. Best regards from Indiana.

I am a native New Yorker, but I now reside in Florida. I last visited NY in October as well just like you to see some friends. The only place I still need to visit in NYC is The Freedom Tower. I hope to head back after the new year or in March. NYC has so many great things to do. The sad part is that the quality of life has dropped over the last few years.

Glad you visited the World Trade Center site. Hard to believe it's been 21 years since 9/11. The Empire State Building was hit by a plane in 1945, but it was an accident.

Another Law & Order fan here! While watching the part about the Empire State Building being completed in 1931, I remembered my visit at age 16 in 1975 thinking it was an old building 44 years after its construction. But that was 47 years ago so it is now more than twice as old.

You should definitely go to Washington,DC. Every museum is free. We went in February and there were no line ups. Had a wonderful time. City tour bus was excellent. Pickled you up and made all the best tourists spots. Driver was knowledgeable and funny. Got off at one stop and explored then caught the bus to the next one. Would definitely recommend.

I was born in Brooklyn & , for a short time, lived in the Upper West Side. Just remember “if you can make it there you can make it anywhere”….

I am headed to NY tomorrow to take my daughter back to school. The smell rarely bothers me but it can be bad. A great time to visit is at Thanksgiving with the parade and all the Christmas decorations. My family has lived in NYC for 25+ years so I go so many times. I love it and wish I had moved there when I was young!

Brooklyn has interesting places to visit too. Maybe next time some of us Marie fans in the NYC area can help show you around.

Having had to go there numerous times in my life, you summed it up nicely. It is loud and it really stinks......which you of course get used to in time, but it is why I live in the hills of West Virginia.

NYC is wild. I've been there maybe 6 or 7 times now and I think I'm getting used to it. The first couple of times, I was really, really ready to leave after the 2nd or 3rd day. However, when I was there this past summer, I was sad to leave. I grew up in a very small town, so NYC feels like a different world. But I'm getting used to it. For the first time in my life, I can actually imagine living there, which is not something I ever thought would be true. Of course, there's NO WAY I could ever afford to live there, so I guess it doesn't matter. I do wish they'd restrict personal vehicles more in Manhattan. It's so walkable and the public transit is so good (one of the only places in America where that's true) that allowing so many cars into such a small place is crazy. And it's a good part of why it's so loud and the air is so bad. I've been lucky that NYC hasn't been too smelly when I've been there, though I did once walk past a trash pile that may have been the single worst thing I've ever smelled in my life. Glad you enjoyed it, overall. You mentioned the feeling of creativity it gave you, and I very much understand that. NYC, Paris, and maybe most of all Venice have all made me feel incredibly creative and inspired when I've visited. It's no wonder so many artists have been associated with those places. I feel lucky that I'm just a 4 hour train ride away. My wife & I are thinking about going back in January or February for a weekend.

Big cities do have a smell all their own. Moscow reeks in places. London I got the sense of something. It wasn't a bad smell there but there was just something in the air. I haven't been to New York in so long. But I do remember some of the smells. Some were very nice & others not nice at all.

NYC is a place I would have liked to live for a year after graduating college but I couldn't imagine making it a permanent home. So much noise and so many people and there is no escaping it.

You are so lucky. I live on the west coast, and have never been east of the Mississippi river. You are seeing more of my country than I have!

I'm happy you were able to visit NYC, but oh Marie your stay was so short! Imagine spending only one day in Paris! Yes, it can be noisy and smelly, depending on where you are, especially the subways. (And I'm sorry you were disappointed by the Yellow Cab thing.) Please come back soon and I'll be happy to show you places (such as my neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights) that are lovely, with fewer tourists, and that I think you would love. But thanks for visiting!

Bonjour Marie! I’m a New Yorker and because I live downtown I don’t experience the noise you mentioned. Not sure about what you we’re smelling too… It will be a very very different experience for you if you spend your next visit exploring the quiet streets of the West Village. Explore Chelsea, West Chelsea, MePa, and maybe explore areas around NYU. Go to Central Park and explore the Upper West Side and museums in the fancy Upper East Side. Those are some suggestions. Glad you saw the areas by the East River but we have a lot of great new options now by Hudson River Park on the West Side. Cheers!

I was looking forward to this. Good job! Hoboken, PATH trains, WTC, etc. It would have been real funny if we had crossed paths. Historical note: In 1945 an army bomber, lost in the morning fog, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building.

Glad you enjoyed your time there. You mentioning the smell made me laugh. Part of the reason for the smell is NYC was one of a few big US cities designed without alleys so garbage is stored and picked up in front of the buildings making the streets pretty stinky at times. Especially in warmer weather the city can smell like hot garbage.

I don't know since I haven't been in NYC since the early 80's, but my understanding is the smell is a relatively recent phenomenon. I've heard native New Yorkers speak about that; i.e., "Just went back home for the first time in a few years and the smell is horrible." That sort of thing, on podcasts or news shows. Anyway; shame. Still, looks like you had a beautiful day and it's always lovely to see your smile.

It's been a while since I was in New York. The last time, I took someone to the top of the World Trade Center. That long ago.

Used to go to NYC alone in the late 70's early 80's. We'd take a bus into the port authority terminal (gone), walk to Times Square and buy left over theater tickets at a huge discount (not there anymore). Spend the day visiting the museums and in Central Park, Go to The Rainbow Room for the happy hour and buffet (buy 1 drink and you could ear as much as you wanted of appetizer type food). Go to the show, and go back to the bus terminal to go home. Might spend $30 to say "We traveled to THE CITY and visited Musems, Dined in The Rainbow Room, and attended the Theater!" LOL.

U think it smelled bad in October, come back next year at the end of July, beginning of August when it is 90 degrees (32 C) and the humidity is 100%.

I realize this is expensive and uses time, but the next time you're in New York City, you should go to a Broadway show. New York has some of the best live theater in the world, and it is labelled as "Broadway."

The only time I went up the Empire State Building was 30 years ago on my first trip there. Just needed a ticket and take elevator up to observation deck. They’ve added so much more and it’s probably much more expensive. Also it’s sad to see you not eating at better restaurants. Please don’t think all of our restaurants are fast food You are missing out by the variety of cuisines that we have.

You have a point about the odd urban smell. I worked in NY a few times and noticed the strong urban smell. I never figured out what it was nor did I want to know. Lol

I can't imagine how exhausted you must've been after that day. All that noise and energy is enough to drain anyone for sure. For your trip to Buffalo, I bet buffalo wings were in order during that stay. 😏 🐔

Hi Marie!! Wow, NYC still smells bad. Haha! I was there once in 79for a weekend, and it smelled bad then too. But I also visited the ESB. I figured you would visit the Statue of Liberty. I missed it as it was being refurbished, and the winter storm.🙄 If ever I make it back, I would like to visit this, and the WTC memorial. Glad you were there! Are they still selling street hot doggs and pretzels?

Small towns, 50,000 or smaller or my favorite. I only liked the big city when i was able to live and work downtown and take public transportation. Commuting into and out of downtown is not recommended.

WOW Marie, NYC - so much to see and do, so much to say 😮! You looked warm in the car on the way, lol. The subway is crazy, and Burger King loves to serve breakfast in the U.S. (your rolls looked nice). My brief visit through NYC revealed to me the bad smell and the crowding and the noise, just as yours did! (Don't go to Cairo - it's worse, and they hate visitors except for their $) Sorry the taxis were gone 😥, but I see they have those packed little street shops still, and wow, talk about a long waiting line!!! I Love the picture of you and the Empire State Building - that is a place I wanted to see, and now you have taken me there 🤗, thank you Marie! So much there - like Minnie Mouse and you posing by her, that telescope (hilarious man with boxes), all the movies that used the building (I saw several 😄, famous people who visited (Pele - soccer), and HOLY COW THE VIEWS!!!!! Unbelievable Marie!!! You know, I did not realize how densely packed NYC is until I saw what you saw, and so many towering buildings (can't even count them all). You found cool souvenirs for your family (YAY). I saw that weird curved building you showed later when you were on top of the building. Then Times Square, another place you took me that I have always heard and read about!! So many famous name places. Marie, I ate at Applebee's the other day with my friend who took me there for my 73rd birthday 🤗❗Your sandwich looked pretty good, and your picture in front of Madame Toussauds ☺ was very cool. Your friend caught you on camera a lot this video, lol! The Harry Potter place would be interesting. I thought the same thing you posted when you got to the South Street Seaport - so much quieter and more relaxing/calmer. AND, of course you spotted that dog 😄!!! The bridges and tug boat were cool too, that you could see from the nice wooden seats around the border. You also found the beautiful brown and white dog, who, OF COURSE, loved Marie ❣ Oh wow, huge metal model of the game Jacks, which I played so much as a kid. You walked through a fairly calm setting to get to the World Trade Center, which is quite impressive (I did not even know what it looked like now), and I assume the names you showed were people who were killed there 😥😥. What was that huge white building (a monument?) that you went inside? And you actually saw a Gordon Setter, which I had never heard of, lol! I am sorry it smelled bad and was so noisy the entire day, but I love that you enjoyed the visit and saw SO MUCH on a very nice day🌞!! But I agree, Marie, visit NYC but do not live in NYC (wish my cousin would move out). Well, you are special for bringing us with you on this amazing journey, thank you so very much 🧡!!! Well, I know you got some things to eat in Burger King but didn't see you eating any of it , you need to try a slice or two of Pizza or maybe a hotdog from a street vendor. Glad you enjoyed your NYC visit! I've been a couple times, & it's nice to see butvway too big, too noisy & I found a lot of people are cool in their demeanor, not necessarily rude, but I guess indifferent. Interesting to see, but I prefer the mountains.

You spent your time in Manhattan. The other 4 boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island) are quieter, less crowded and less smelly than Manhattan. You would have like NYC much more 3 years ago.

Here's some interesting notes. The Empire State Building was hit by a US bomber after WWII. The pilot was transferring a plane to a new location, got lost in fog and hit the building. A women survived after the elevator plunged 70 stories and hit the bottom. Just freaky. Read that on Wikipedia somewhere.

I've been to NYC a few times and it does always smell. Either food, pot, or garbage. One of those 3 and *constantly* 😅 It really isn't like an other city I've been to. It has it's own identity, that's for sure.

Thanks for doing this Marie. How can people afford to in NYC? It looks like since covid is easing the traffick is picking back up.BurgerKing for a potty break is sensible. Thank you for doing as I do and making a purchase for the convenience of the facilities. Love the empire state building. Never made it to WTC. Very disappointing. Some great sights to see. Impossible to visit in one day. Perhaps someday I'll make another trip and... who am i kidding, I'm never going back. Noise and smell? Bad news. Both are better than they used to be. Like you, I'm a country mouse and it was hard for me to go "nose blind". It makes it difficult to enjoy eating. I'll just remember my visit and leave it at that. It smells bad everywhere? Like what? I work in NYC and the only places that really smell bad is some subway stations and certain corner streets where the homeless do their business.

Yo, Looks like your in a NY State of mind Marie 🏙️🗽 It's exciting that you made it to one of your dream locations, an early breakfast🥐 for a big day doesn't really surprise me for a city that never sleeps, getting anything you want to eat at anytime. You took lots of great shots of the cityscape, I miss seeing those old 🚕 taxicabs to, there was a comedy show that was a favourite growing up with my dad who was a cabby so it's something I'm very familiar with. Heading the empire state building lived up to expectations , I liked how they projected how it was built along with King Kong🦧 so unique, the views were Amazing as far as the eye can see, such a beautiful day for it, glad you picked up some cool gifts, snow globes are so magical around this time , I really liked all the pictures they had of visitors & movies to, I used to have a big photo of Manhattan from above on my wall like the ones you took. It's nice to unwind along the waterfront away from the smells (is it really that bad) & all the hectic noise, there used to be a 70ft tower there but it got stuck by a tanker & had to be torn down, the Ambrose was the first light Ship of the fleet to act as a beacon to guard the channel there, It was also kind of you to pay your respects at the impressive freedom tower memorial 🌺 so heartbreaking with so many lives lost , it's such a fitting tribute. Hopefully when you'll return your have more time to explore around central/ Bryant park & take in a show maybe even the Apollo if you can handle it , I've seen how wild it used to get on TV , maybe more of the boroughs if it's safe enough & of course across the ferry to lady liberty , all something special to look forward to next time. Taxi Ford crown vics stopped being made in 2011. Most are gone.

I assumed that those particular yellow taxis don't exist anymore because it's an older style of car. I believe they are Ford Crown Victorias, which is that same vehicle that a lot of police cars used to be also. But Ford doesn't make that car anymore. So you don't see police cars like that anymore either. It seems a lot of the taxis now are Toyotas and police cars are mostly Chevy or Ford SUVs.

Yeah the city has a smell that’s not for everyone. Just it was likely close to garbage day hence where most of the smell comes from but also the city prepares early for winter by repairing or replacing steam heating lines which also makes the smell worse. If they don’t fix the steam pipes or place vents the steam pressure builds up and the street explodes taking a building with it. Those steam pipes build up a lot of nasty mold and who knows what gaining that smell. Hence why city workers clean it a lot. Also the subway stations don’t have the best bathrooms so that might a bad thing. If you want places for quiet in NYC try Central Park as that is pretty quiet except by the huge fountain and strawberry fields, zucatti park by battery park is quiet enough, the park in front of the huge apartment tower in Chinatown is nice if a bit dated though quiet, the area behind the bridge in Chinatown is very quiet except for some fresh produce vendors. Avoid canal street proper as it’s just tourists yakking away instead use Mott and Pell as that turned into a nice outdoor restaurant scene with some local artists doing paintings or whatever on the ground or redoing the walls and it looks really nice. Williamsburg was transformed into a huge millennial hotspot with photographers and tons to do. Madison square park is more the college crowd as NYU kids are out there constantly doing just stuff. There is a small park near Wall Street that’s pretty quiet actually three parks as they are hidden one is a wood deck between some office buildings but it’s pretty quiet and you can think a little, one has a waterfall that hits a glass cylinder, the last one has a waterfall but it’s silent there. Finding these parks aren’t easy as you need to know someone as they have to show you because they are hidden. I found the glass cylinder park by accident when I cut through trying to get to the grave of Alexander Hamilton who is buried at trinity Church just across from Wall Street. I have this love of the musical Hamilton that I try to learn all I can about the founding fathers.

New York is definitely dirtier than tv and movies makes it look - it’s more cramped, more dirty, more icky lol it’s tons of fun and there’s so much to see and do…but yeah it’s definitely dirtier than it seems - and much more cramped than it seems! If youve seen the movie “serendipity” - that restaurant is great (the frozen hot chocolate is amazing) but it’s SMUSHED - the movie makes it seem big and open but it isn’t at all. And the city is always under construction - constantly. There’s scaffolding everywhere.

So glad you had a good but tiring day. These days all big cities smell bad. I grew up in Toronto and now live 3.5 hours away and when I go back the first thing that hit's me is the smell. New York is wonderful to visit but I could never live there. Give me the rural countryside and wide open spaces. I am loving these videos.❤

Hi Marie. If you ever go back to New York go to Ellis Island. You might find some distant relatives that emigrated to the US. Would be nice to know you have Family that you could look for.

Yeah the standard yellow taxis were replaced. They have a cycle of like five years before they go away for something newer. Taxi companies really have changed as Uber and Lyft have eaten into their business. So they are using more suvs and vans to fit more people. Honestly unfortunately the price has really not been great as it’s quite expensive for one. It’s $50 from LaGuardia airport into the city and with like a huge tip on top so it’s more like $75 for that ride maybe more. Uber you have flat fee the entire time and it’s just easier. At least you don’t get charged in traffic like taxis.

A lot of the smell in NYC is caused by the trash bags piled up on the streets. NYC doesn't have any alleys, so the trash bags have to sit right out on the sidewalks.

Did you get a chance to see the Statue of Liberty? If not maybe next time. I didn’t see it until my second visit to NYC.

When people come to NY City, they only go to Manhattan. There are 4 other parts of the city folks.
