Indians buy bleaches and fairness products, which are also advertised with leading film stars endorsing these products. We must admit we are obsessed with skin colour to the extent that we would accept advertisements portraying darker women as less employable than fair skinned women. And the word gora or gori ( fair skinned )being used almost as a synonym for beauty is accepted in our society. If we aren't racist then I do not know who is.
Sure, you we were kids and were ignorant about it. The maker wasn't. Director Shekhar Kapur, is a British film director, who studied in the UK and has traveled worldwide before entering movies. He knew exactly what he was doing, perhaps you didn't. So, stop defending him.
They are all supposed to be a group of international dancers with Ms. Hawa Hawaii as their main attraction. Since India back then didn't have the concept of political correctness, I guess they just decided to paint the same local brown dancers black to portray them as dancers of a different nationality, thereby cutting down the expenditure while still giving the group an international feel (back in the day).
Bollywood still portrays foreigners in stereotypical manner. Be it in Queen, English Vinglish, or My Name is Khan. Especially, when it comes to their depiction of black people and homosexuals.
There is no reason for it. There were a lot of racist undertones in Bollywood movies and stuff back in the days. Growing up watching this we wouldn't realize how wrong and inappropriate this was. I guess it was just a random choice the filmmakers made without thinking. That being said, Mr India is one of my favourite movie and this song is just epic. I must have watched this movie at least 50 times as a kid because it is so fun and entertaining. This just brought a huge smile on my face. So glad you reacted to this. ❤
It was not racist, racism was never a problem in India. Castism and communalism are problem. Indians never owned black slaves and black face was not used to show them inferior here.when you don't have any knowledge then just sit quietly.
@@Someone-hl5gr Another food for thought, if we were inherently racists, why would we have BLACK Gods and Goddesses. Krishna God translates to shade of black, Shyaam means black...Goddess Kaali is literally black. Hindus in India do worship Goddesses of color. But I am still not sure if that is really a NOT racist thing. Anyway...In India, people do NOT suppress people based on colour. But, then there has been instances in Delhi of Africans being attacked for presumed selling of drugs.
THERE IS NOTHING RACIST HERE. HERE SHE REPRESENTS A SPY AND PRENTEND AS DANCER FROM OUTSIDE INDIA. SHE HERSEF REPRESENT A CHINESE DANCER AND THE BACK GROUND DANCERS ARE FROM AFRICA. SO THEY HAVE BEEN DRESSED LIKE THAT NOT TO BE RECOGNIZED. IN INDIA GOD ITSELF IS PAINTED BLACK AND HE IS THE SUPERIOR FROM. THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF RACISM BY COLOR IN INDIA.
I couldn't even figure out why Rick and Korbin were so offended till they said "black face". 😂 Black face isn't a concept in India, because India does not share America's history of slavery (if anything, we were victims of it). I guess they painted their bodies and faces black to contrast it with the white and pink they were wearing. And most of us are dark skinned anyway, so it's not offensive whatsoever to our senses. It's like a black man calling another black man "nigga" and the white guy getting offended 😂
Well there is cast system. The darker u r the less worthy u r. If u watched 90s bollywood u know that a little chocolate in u made u ugly almost in every film. These fair and lovely ads are not helping either. Indians were colorists at that time they just weren't reallizing it or didn't even care to acknowledge it.
Nandini Mukhopadhyay very well said. Nobody could have put it in a better way. If anything, Indians are racist towards their own n not towards the world.
Before 90s even there was no mobile or internet. And knwledge about that black face racism is also not undrstood by 90% of the peoples. It's just a funny scene. We never thought that as a racist act until today 😂🤣😅
@@dhruveshpatel1109 Totally true, In india we can see black and brown skin in same family, so it's not a big thing unless in certain case of marriages.
when sri passed away this is the first song that came to my mind and i just listened to it on repeat and cried my eyes out!!!!! what a magnificent soul!may her soul rest in peace my beauty
Black faces are so big issue in America as it's rare and racism attached to it .but in India it's just another face and we actually not realised this and notice before u pointing out that. I feel it's just Normal color and just color codiniation 😉
Regardless, back in the 90s and prior, Bollywood would do black faces of random ppl and it’s inappropriate. They would also make many black ppl look back or black thug roles, also very racist. Granted they didn’t know all the political corrections at that time, if you think Indians aren’t racist or this isn’t racist, then you’re living under a rock
It's not normal in anyways. There are many black students in my college from African countries and then there are many people who will pass comments on them because of their colour or body shape.
my instincts tell me she was murdered. nobody drowns in a bathtub. even when you get unconsious, the lack of oxygen in brain would trigger body for last attempt. and there will be splashes of water on floor. no splashes of water on floor.. how do people get away with such stuff...

Try Charlie chaplin scene of Sridevi from the movie Mr India and dont forget to watch the song Kisi ke hath na ayegi yeh ladki These r some cool stuff she did in back 90s
@@user-qn2ey6gk4m Dude , most of us are dark. We didn't kill a native black civilization to create our own empire . Racism is the bane of Europe and USA to the rest of the world . That same concept can't be implied in Indian context.
@@divineray7822 nah fam people trying to imitate a skin colour that isn't theirs is just gross and "most of us are dark" really doesn't matter. I am Asian myself, people with darker skin are definitely looked down upon by society and treated way unfairly. You can't just pretend like those people don't exist and wouldn't be offended or feel insecure about themselves.
@@user-qn2ey6gk4m we have People who are as Dark as the black people, it makes no sense that we are racist to these people because of their colour in any way . Particular situations may arise where people are racist but this is NOT racist. Our goddess Ma kaali is also painted black , dancing origins paint their faces black . Our culture never oppressed the Black people because of their colour Like you describe. No one should accept this racism accusation.
@@user-qn2ey6gk4m Partiality is true Sir but not "racism" . Reason is with due respect the Bollywood industry favours those with "fair - complexion" compared to those who are original skinned. This is why most actors and actresses are heavily made up (they apply all sorts of skin lotions and make - ups) except a handful few who naturally have a fair skin tone. This is the darkest side of Bollywood .... and any wood so far.... The casting bench easily says : "He/She won't fit the camera ... sorry not in the market". This is gradually changing with great actors who were treated unfairly have started production companies of their own which hires true talent instead of "skin - colour". From ~ 1960s till now, the film industries in India have evolved from slight cultural to No culture representation. Hence as for my viewpoint, modern Indian film industry is more of "Not Indian" anymore and more of lavish rich people in parties, garbs and wines. I hope you get what I mean.
When Rick says that we know the color discrimination in India, it's not like if you understand the nuances that exist here.....It's not quite the same as USA where African Americans were taken as slaves from the 17th century onwards. The most sane (probably not enough) reason would be imitation from US art forms. So, it's a side effect of being bad trendsetters in the world.
Hmm. I know that Bollywood tends to copy everything American, or Western in general. Besides India's own racism issues, I wonder if in this case they were just copying American minstrel acts without realizing what it meant.
Oh my god i m misssing so much the multy tailented the legendry legendry legendry actress sridevi.what a expression queen on bolywood.the comedy queen expression queen tragedy queen.she is phenomenal she adorable. I ihave no words for them.nobody can touch the acting talent like srodevi.love u so much.
Painting your face black is racist everywhere. Not just America. And you can't compare blackface to Holi. That's some mental gymnastics you did to justify what you saw. Just accept something wrong had been done in a past Era, learn from the mistakes of the people who lived before you and move on. Don't attempt whataboutism.

Mithun Da doing 80s and 90s was very Popular Actor and he had fan following in Former USSR, Eastern European Countries and African Countries. He then was no lesser to Amitabh Bachchan. He won 3 National Awards and 2 Film Fare Awards.
My heart goes out to sridevi.. Please react to her song "Na jaane Kaha se aaye hai "from the movie chaalbaz..And yes watch Mr India u will love this movie
Thanks so much for watching this. It just bought such a huge smile on my face. It was a cult movie during my childhood. All of us might have watched this movie multiple times and can still watch it without getting bored. You got to watch this movie drama, comedy, action all in balance. She was such a versatile actress but nobody could beat her for her comedy timing.
Sridevi has been adjuged as the greatest actress in indian cinema for over a 100 years on a poll conducted on the occasion of century of Indian cinema..
LOL This is one of those things that was hilarious and fun when we were kids and now just looks HIDEOUSLY RACIST !!!!! It is just something that was seen as funny then. but I still love Sridevi so DAMN IT! NO there is no need for blackface
No one actually paid attention to the background dancers during that time because sridevi presence made everyone else out of focus. I think they were trying to portray like dancers from different parts of the world. She is one of the famous female superstars.
At first I was like why do you react in such way when that slow motion part appears and why are are you uncomfortable with that costume but then I realised it's black face but was totally unintentional...
Historically, there is no white-black racism in India. Though india had caste system but nothing based on skin color. So, it was no big deal in india to color faces that way. And today also it is not, becos India has no history for skin color discrimination.
We did, we do. Just that back then it wasn't as sensitive a topic. When I was a kid, if I called a dark person "kalia", nobody would have batted an eye (but my mom slapped me when I was 8 for this reason, and I learned my lesson).
No skin color discrimination? Which India have you been living in? I am glad you might never have experienced it first hand but please, oh please, don't deny its existence.
@@littlesushie I think you are living in different India.....the one I stay in I see racism everyday everywhere.....so I would like you to open your eyes and wake up from the deep sleep you are sleeping in

Hahahahahaha... tensions are their related to caste in India... not at all regarding Colour...never was there. I think you are misjudging our madness to be fair skinned... with racism.
North East Indians are treated like foreigners to this day. There is a race issue in India. And there is plenty of learned racism against black people as well. Caste and colourism aren't our only faults.
You have to have to watch sridavi in Shiv tandav sotram from movie Chalbaaz plsssas.....pls react to it... you will just luv her.... she is excellent with her comic timing though.
I dont know why people say indian are racist ....like seriously!!! There is no discrimination in the laws ...theres no difference in the rights shared by all colors of ppl in india...and if some ppl like their partner to be bright color then that is their type their choice its not racism .....and the black color guys were just painted black to meet the choreography and costume ....if thats the case then i think that tarzan should have been offended just becoz they wore costume and danced like tarzan.....its not racism ....racism is when theres difference in their rights or they are mistreated ....
Nothing racist here back then budget restrain so couldn't heir people from west so used color to paint face No ulterior motives Indian anyway are dark skin proud to have it Are god are also dark 👍👍
You know the diff between dark skin and painting the face black right? Those Indian dancers were already dark, Dir painted their faces jet black for a jungle-themed dance number. Similar to what Hollywood did in the 1940s original King Kong movie. I can't believe people are defending this blatant racism/black face in the comments with their whataboutery abt Indiana Jones or by simply pleading ignorance. Her news of her death sent shock waves all over especially for us 90’s kids that grew up watching her movies/ dancing. She’ll live on as one of India’s finests for generations to come
Sridevi is the quintessential child woman always. You people should watch this movie Mr. India. Watch her telugu movie ,"Kshana Kshanam". Also watch her in " Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari" , in telugu. She is brilliant.
We take black white both faces as joke...truly...in india nobody serious about their color...using white cream product is other matter....#Also in this, nothing wrong.....#Keep reacting...always love ur reaction...
Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom. Around the same time as this movie Mr. India. Perhaps you'd try to explain the scenes, images, and symbols in that? I rest my case.
Indiana Jones was not racist as well. Nor was Mr. India. It's just a depiction of people in movies. That's all. It's not about being racist but just doing something to have something. India and the black culture is big enough to enjoy humor and such situations. There's a white guy for crying out loud in this movie Mr. India who's made to look like a bumbling idiot. Loads of Indian movies make the white guy the villain and Indians generally are openly racist against the whites (gorahs as they're called). Reflects a lot in Indian movies where they openly mock white people. Why doesn't Mod Missy bitch about that then?

Its a fun song with very beautiful lyrics and performed amazingly well by sridevi.... And it wasnt racial at all... If you will watch the movie u will know the story behind the song.... Those smugglers called a foreign dance crew from hawai island and lead dancer was miss hawa hawai sri devi who is journalist gets to know this and somehow comes instead of miss hawa hawai to smugglers den to know there plan.... What director did he required dancers who looked like from hawai island for a song only to dance not for acting so he managed by makeup and as it was a fun movie this was ok because indian man disguised as african made it more funny
Back before the 90s, racism was not talked about much or it wasn’t frowned upon even if it was prevalent. Hence, the moviemakers didn’t bother to showcase it that way in the movies
I am fortunate to see her movies in cinema... English Vinglish and MOM. My most favourite actress I used to see her movies on Doordarshan in my childhood. Will miss forever.
I think u don't know why fair and lovely creams are having such a high revenue from India. It's because we are obsessed with white/fair skin. Being fair skin is welcomed by society and dark/black skin is looked down upon. If you are living under a rock till now then wake up and see with your own eyes
@@saifmehdi178 I agree Indians consider fair skin desirable. However in India we never had discrimination like casteism or slavery BASED ON SKIN COLOUR.
I am sure there was. It just wasn't recognised. Black facing the background dancers to dance as idiots is dehumanizing black people. Back then, black people were just thought of as freaks from Africa. And that is racist. It just wasn't recognised as racism.
Sridevi was the superstar!! One of ze best actress in indian cinema.. watch her acting in movie Sadma. There is a song Aye zindagi gale laga ley... iconic song... great song n great movie
No one in India thought like that whenever anyone watched this movie or song in their childhood.. and I am sure not even director thought about it.. no one knows what going on in us at that time
