Hawaii #1 for expensive electricity: 'We're being priced out'

"It's just insane, this is one of the main reasons why we left," former Ewa Beach resident Bickham said. "Hawaii is home. We raised our children there, our son, we literally left a year before he graduated high school and as prices continue to just go up and up and up, we're being priced out. The utilities are not helping."

You're likely in a neighborhood where they are piloting their new "peak dynamic rates" tests. Even with a battery, a couple window a/c or a load of laundry in the evening will drain what's stored in a few hours. Water heaters the silent killer at over 5KW when on. You really need to use the "chugging" appliances during the day/peak production as Heco will pay you less than half what they charge (even more during peak if they go as they plan.). It's about maximizing your use during peak production as even $20k of batteries will only be saving you a few dollars a day if you use heavy after sun down.

Kauai's energy portfolio currently includes 43% solar, 14% hydro and 11% biomass. The 52 megawatt Tesla battery system is connected to the 13 megawatt solar array. It is more than enough to keep up with night demand/on-peak hours. Coal and oil is far more impractical in Hawaii because the supply is shipped here, refined on Oahu, then transported out, only to be burned again for power generation or for cars. Renewable energy is energy security. Relying on other countries for oil is not energy security.

In San Diego, it's $0.39 and $0.48 per kWh based on usage on the standard rate, and up to $0.65 per kWh from 4 to 9 pm on a time of use plan. But our climate is more mild which requires less use of an A/C. Plus, add the fact that we can use natural gas for ovens, stoves, furnaces, and water heaters, but Hawaii uses electricity for everything - that's the real killer.

This shouldnt be a problem for hawaii. Home owners could convert their homes to solar power and grid power, which would help not only supply the tenants of the home with free power but will send all un use electricity to a power station in which the account holder will be reimbursed for. Another solution to help their grid is to set up solar towers rather than farms to collect and store engery. Other opitions are water, wind, and thermal engery harvesting.

Ohana being more important than money. And very laid back. Wish l never moved back but l had to deal with things on the mainland and the rest is history. Hope people can figure it out. Solar and wind generation sounds like the way to go and get away from the power company all together.

Exactly. The average electricity bill in Hawaii as of 2022 was $402.30. But $500 is just outrageous. Yes electricity here is costly, but usage is just as big of a thing to focus on. I live in a single family rental home in Hawaii on the Big Island. Our power bill for February 2024 was $130.20. No solar, nada. Many of the upgrades we have done involve reflective window tinting on East, South, and West facing windows, weatherstripping doors and windows, unplugging vampire drain devices, using A/C sparingly and relying on winds and ceiling fans, the list goes on. I think this woman has a right to complain about the general cost of living here, but you’re right, very few are paying $500+ a month for utilities.
