The fishing forecast was "so-so" but my schedule lined up with OG kayak angler Romel Palafox so we hit the water before sunrise to try for some Akule (Goggle Eye) in the dark to use as live bait. They didn't cooperate, but luckily the Opelu (Mackerel Scad) were out in force so we loaded up at sunrise and headed out to the grounds. It wasn't long before I heard a splash behind me and when I turned I caught a glimpse of topwater activity about 300 yards behind me. I pedaled as fast as I could towards the commotion and it wasn't long before both my live baits got hammered by mahimahi.
Later in the day, Romel radioed saying he'd hooked a big ono (wahoo), so I re-rigged both lines with wire leader and set out two lively baits. Not long after, my short line got hit, but the fish didn't hook up. As I was reeling my long line in to check the bait, something grabbed on and took off on a sizzling run...
Super big mahalos to Romel for the friendly advice and for keeping my ono in his fishbag! Check out his RU-vid as well for more kayak fishing vids @ / hawaiianpinoy79
