Tonight I’m getting out for night diving adventure! At night, you come across cool creatures and fish that you would never see during the day time! Plus, I JUST got a brand new UNDERWATER LASER - and it’s the most powerful laser that you’re legally allowed to use in the United States underwater! We’re gonna see if we can have some fun and get a reaction from some fish with this!
Lights - Typically when I do a night dive, I go with just 1 or 2 dive lights/torches, but I took one of my old spearfishing floats and converted it into the ULTIMATE night diving light array! I’m hoping the extra lights make for some awesome underwater footage!
BONUS: Watch to the end to see a special DOUBLE Catch and Cook!
Water Temperature - I often get asked: is the water cold at night? Interestingly enough, the water is virtually the same temperature at night time as it is during the daytime in Hawaii! In fact, sometimes when I get out of the water at night time, I feel like it’s warmer IN the water than OUT of the water!
Dive Time - The sun is setting just after 6pm right now in Hawaii, so it’s not like we need to go out night diving super late at midnight or something. We can jump-in just after 6pm and get-out by 9 or 10 pm and have a great night dive!
Bigfin Reef Squid - at the start of our night dive, we come across a Bigfin Reef Squid! They only live to just over 300 days old, which is pretty short! They grow up to 14 inches.
Sleeping Fish - Believe it or not, lots of fish go to sleep at night time! Sometimes I even see some fish sleep with their eyes open because they don’t have eye lids. For me, I have lots of opportunities to fish during the day, so unless I was in a survival situation, I don’t like to shoot sleeping fish - some people consider it unsportsmanlike, and I would probably agree.
Not all fish sleep at night! There are also types of fish that are nocturnal and most active at night, like many of the red colored soldierfish and squirrelfish, and others like the yellowfin goatfish (or red weke).
7-Eleven Crab - I catch a big-daddy 7-Eleven crab! They’re called 7-Eleven Crabs because they have: Seven large spots, and four smaller spots along the back of the shell. I brought the net bag down to the crab since they’ve got some serious claws. These crabs are unregulated in Hawaii, so you can take them at any size, male or female. One downside to 7-Eleven Crabs is that they yield a small amount of meat compared to other types of crab that are the same size. These crabs are not considered a delicacy like the Kona Crab in Hawaii - lots of people don’t really love the taste, but I’ve got somebody special in mind who loves these crabs - stick around for the cook later in this episode!
Laser - Steph was busy on testing out the laser, and she found that some of the smaller fish would get interested in it but they wouldn’t all-out chase it like a cat!
Cowrie Shells - Just like if you go out at night and look for snails in your yard… underwater at night, all the sea snails come out and crawl across the reef. I even catch one cowrie shell with its mantle over its shell - it’s like a cloak around the entire shell. It allows the shell to sort of re-build and re-glaze and polish itself!
Brown Slipper Lobster - I saw lots of Brown Slipper Lobsters on this dive - they don’t have any claws, and all the meat is found in their tail. These guys are nocturnal, and during the day they’re always hiding on the reef. The Brown Slipper Lobster only attains 6 inches. The Scaly Slipper Lobster is the bigger variety of Slipper Lobster that I often see, and it can grow up to 16 inches!
Spiny Lobster - Spiny lobsters make a squeaky sound using their soft-tissue - if you listen closely when I grab them, you’ll hear them making all sort of rubbery sounds! I only saw Green Spiny Lobsters tonight - they are more common nowadays than the Hawaiian Spiny or Painted Spiny Lobsters. Some of these spiny lobsters were hanging out so deep in their holes that I couldn’t really reach them without getting my arm pierced by the Sea Urchins that they hide behind.
Cook - I cook my catch with a subscriber recommended Blackened Seasoning. I think I may have a new favorite spice! Cajun Choice Seasoning Blackened: amzn.com/B00CV48CV2
