I will readily admit I do not have kids, but one thing I always do when flying to the Big Island, is get a morning flight to Hilo. Spend some time in Hilo, and then take the drive over to the Kona side.
I was planning on taking my 14 month old to Kauai and staying at Koloa Landing Resort, but now I'm thinking maybe I should do Maui..... I thought I saw lots to do that a child that old would enjoy. It seemed like there was lots of calm water to swim in, the chocolate tour seemed interesting, and the drive to Waimea Canyon. We really enjoy authentic experiences and lush surroundings which is why we were thinking Kauai. Should I book Maui instead??
