Professor Anthony Elliott appears in discussion with John Foxx - founder and original lead singer of Ultravox - at the University of South Australia on 26 July 2016.
I grew up in the 80's and I have an endless fascination with new wave/synth pop. I discovered John Foxx and Ultravox really late because I'm always late to the party.. I am obsessed with "Systems of Romance" and "Metamatic"..
S o R was my first introduction to the Foxx Ultravox when first released in 1978 and I've been a long time fan of the Midge Ure Ultravox ever since having seen them in concert 5 times and Midges recent concert
Metamatic has been in my top 10 albums from the moment I first heard it back in 1980. Still play it regularly. And what a lovely man - I could listen to him all day
I realized watching this interview and others. i've watched several john fox interviews. john is quite funny, and for some reason it always seems to go right over The interviewer's heads. lol. when asked about the sudden change in direction to his follow up album "well, i went to italy and discovered sunshine." his interviews are not only chalk full of wisdom but chalk full of lil humorous tid bits like that.
Very worthwhile interview. I'm a huge fan of both the Foxx and Ure era so I'm pleased there was no disrespect shown to Mk 2. Was impressed at how he described it as the unit moving on.
Midge Ure era was more song based possibly better material too,but John Foxx was far more experimental and interesting. I think I prefer Ultravox with midge ure and John foxx was so much better solo in my opinion and midge ure solo is just awful.
Hard to reconcile this gentlemanly John Foxx with the enigmatic lead singer of Ultravox! I want him to suddenly launch up off his seat and scream, "SAVAGE!"
Who else loves new wave and synth pop because it takes you back to being a child? There is something innocent about those new Wave songs for me. I think other people get that same feeling from 50's music and Disco...
Wow! Brilliant words from this Genius as usual! New instruments make new music, that is simply exactly what i believe in too. i learned at the end of the 70's i was getting bored with the same old rock & roll, and Foxx & Ultravox were one of the first that changed my musical direction after i had heard Kraftwerk a few years earlier. I consider myself a scientist of music in my lab, and Foxx is the professor i follow the teachings of. John Foxx still has not reached his peak...his entire career is a peak!
I can honestly say that as a fan of Billy Fury and the original Ultravox, I can't see a connection. Although the thought of Billy covering Dislocation is intriguing.
