The yard owners prepare the ‘rubbish’ coal. Truck drivers from mines contracted to Eskom pick up proper coal from mines, then offload the good coal at these yards where they then load the rubbish coal to be dumped at Eskom. These yard owners then sell the genuine coal to various customers.

I did not hear the gentleman interviewed saying he is a chicken farmer but selling to chicken farmers, please Tumahole don't misrepresent what the gentleman said.

If the Hawks say the coal is substandard then they have what we call the Burden of Proof in this situation. No accused person is compelled to aid in their prosecution or incriminate themselves when speaking to anyone especially the media. Secondly if you buy coal and process it there is what we refer to as tailings that look like coal but are substandard. 3rdly Eskom is the one that should be charged with determining the quality of the coal they are purchasing and using in its processes. Hawks can't be out here operating on rumors, the journalist is not even well informed about what is happening here. The coal used by power stations is the lowest grade of coal that exists on the market, that coal would be considered overburden if there's no procurement by thermal power stations. Eskom should be the one identifying their supply chain flaws and for journalists to be out here saying that Eskom is a voiceless victim here is downright stoopid. He might be having a trading certificate but it's very unlikely that his practice is environmentally compliant. He's probably in contravention with SA's environmental legislation. You don't just process minerals on a land without applying for environmental authorisation with DMRE. EIA reports have to be produced and approved for such an exercise to occur on a land.

To be completely fair, the gentleman that they spoke to is not a colliery owner. He simply runs a coal processing yard. To own a colliery you need licenses from the DMR. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t mix in chickens with his coal 😂
