Putting my hypothesis about crow calls warding off hawks to the test. Will my racing pigeons be safe? Does it actually help keep pigeons safe?

The crows around my loft that I feed attack hawks that move in. I always know when one is around by the crows behavior

the calls they react to the most are alarm calls- the calls a crow will give for an intruder, its literally a "call to arms" and means the crows are upset and may mob the hawk- as opposed to just general contact calling. it was interesting to see the adult hawk first duck under the roof ledge, and then go to hide under the tree branches

Absolutely! Calls to arms is a good way to think of it indeed! The recordings I did weren’t a crow that was just perched cawing in the morning. Alarm calls is what you want

I wonder if you got some Halloween crows or even just some cut out crow silhouettes cut out of plywood, painted black and put them near the loft... or even inside the window. of the loft ...similar to how people put owl figures to keep the pigeons away...I winder if that would help too.

Great suggestion!! I think that would absolutely help!!

This weekend took a drive to Rexburg, Provo and back in three days, 17 hours of Jim Jenner secrets of champions, can’t recall where, someone in the UK. They used the call of an Eurasian eagle-owl. It eats hawks. It looks similar to a great horned owl. The fancier swore by it. Might be worth a test… great horned owls will kill other raptors… Hope you and yours have a great Christmas.

Definitely! Using great horned owl calls would be effective for sure! Thanks for chiming in!

They don't look too impressed. The neighbours might be more interested (in stopping that sound). 😆 How would you make it work, if the hawks would fear it? Just letting the sound on all the time? That doesn't look like a pleasant option. Try to attract the crows in your garden by feeding them. Works better in winter when they can't find food.

Attracting crows so they are regular visitors is ideal, yes!! But in the absence of crows playing the calls does seem to help keep the hawks distracted or distanced. You are correct the the first hawk I show does not look too impressed at first, but then finally takes off. The second one does react to the calls once I play a video with “alert” crow calls. Yes, the neighbors may very well hate this idea 😆😆 I’m just testing it out. The idea would be to play it when you plan to fly your birds

We will have to agree to disagree on that my friend 🙂 Hawks and corvids (crows, ravens etc.) and owls hate each other

same with the crows around my place the crows will dive bomb taking turns diving at the hawks will come from all direction 2 at a time until theres like 5 or more pairs they will chase them out of there area and help there neiboring crows launch attacks until there gone. but unfortunatly the hawks do sneak by the crows and herass my chickens.

Sharp Shin hawks deal with crows on the regular .Being a Falconer for over !5 years and flying homers longer I have seen many Hawk attacks. The Hawk in your video has one thing on its mind the crow sounds made no difference . It only was interested in your birds, which is why it moved over closer to your flight cage to get a better look Now crows diving and harassing a hawk will get it to move but sound alone is a stretch Good videos though
