This is one of their most accessible songs and Stacia still has her clothes on!!! Icons in the UK, the Godfathers of Space rock for over 50 years despite continual internal strife and chaos. They just released their 35th studio album this year and it is their best in 15 or 20 years. For most, the definitive album is the live epic Space Ritual album. Amazing underappreciated band.

the origin of the song was a member of the band (probaly Calvert) finding a bell and running around while peaking on acid screaming about his silver machine

You only get a hint of it here, but one thing Hawkwind trait is doing songs which are very simple (on one level) with a lot of repetitively repeated rhythms/melodies, but layered into a complex soundscape so that it avoids being boring and carries you along. Kinda proto-trance music, in a way. (Hawkwind are "proto-" a lot of things; one British newspaper described them as the most influential band you've never heard of.) An example is _Earth_ _Calling/Born_ _to_ _Go_ live, which I recommend. Thanks Chris!

This is awsome. We supported Hawkwind at the Malvern winter gardens way back on there renaissance chronicles of the blacksword album. Dave and Hugh were great, but there was friction. I got to meet Steve Hillage of Gong and went to stonehenge Free Fest. Ed Wynne of Ozrics and haggis, man this is when we all went rock trance mode. I was given a roland gs6 from one of them ? Great memories your digging up a great past for me thank you JPan ❤

Ya just hit me with a thunderbolt. At around 8 years of age (1968) my older brother and I discovered a cupboard full of old 78's and a few 45's in grandma's house, We gave everyone of those records a spin, the 78's were mostly Big Band, Country & Western, and Jazz. Records I expect from the USA, as my grandma worked at the american NAAFI during the war so I think that is where the huge number of 78's came from. She did end up with a lot of stuff the Americans 'left behind'. The 45's were mostly early to mid 60's 'Pop'. Purchased by my mum and her siblings in their youth.Things I remember in those 45's were the Beatles, Tom Jones. Patsy Cline, a real eclectic mix. But the record which blew me away and got played too transparency was Red River Rock by Johnny and the Hurricanes. Swigging grandmas sherry and freaking out to RRR was the highlight of our Saturday nights. All the Adults including my gran would be out partying (60's Liverpool) and the kids would all be left to their own devices. I realised today that RRR was my introduction to Hawkwind, the only band I have ever felt true affinity with. Oh don't get me wrong I love Floyd and Zeppelin and all the usual suspects. But for me the message in Hawkwind goes a little deeper. Thanks for the enlightenment Justin. Why have I not realised this before?

Silver Machine was a hit single but there is so much better stuff available from Hawkwind, especially their earlier albums, In Search of Space being arguably the best. Plus, The Space Ritual is one of the greatest live albums of all time. Lemmy’s bass playing in that whole live performance was iconic and the space vibe continued throughout. The Orgone Accumulator is one of my favourite tracks. Here’s the link… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-43ek77aAJTQ.html

I was a fanatic for a late 80s and 90s space rock band called Ozric Tentacles. They caught my ear because they had roots in the Hawkind type bands but also had absorbed more of the fusion as well as electronica that developed since the 70s. So it was much more satisfying musicianship and sonic adventures to hear in the psychedelic-ish genre. hm, maybe I should think of a donation request.

Bullshit. If you can't say anything positive about them just keep quiet. The drug references to Hawkwind are tired, pathetic and pretty much false. Any numb prof US soft-rock/poodle rock bands from the 1980s consumed far more drugs than Hawkwind ever did. Wanker.

This is a live recording from February 1972 with vocals overdubbed by Lemmy in the studio. The original vocals on what was a relatively new song were performed by Bob Calvert and didn't sound great for a record due to the high octave range so the band tried out a few members on vocals and Lemmy came out best. The live footage is from another gig where Lemmy was singing, provided by the band for the big UK chart show Top of the Pops as the band didn't want to tarnish their image by appearing on a pop music show. The production is 'wall of sound' and deliberately murky. Spaced out Rock and roll is what I'd call this, they were less structured earlier, and tighter/cleaner sounding later on where they'd sometimes go into dance music territory. Try Brainstorm from the same year for something heavy and direct but a bit proggy further into track.

Of the Classic Hawkwind of 1970-75' it is far from their Best song !!! Just cut through all the Clutter and listen to the whole Live "Space Ritual" with maybe your best Lava & Mood lighting and what ever Beverage you like, this CD must be heard just like the concert with one song leading into another with great Atmospheric Space Prog poetry between some songs and of course the famous "Sonic Attack" !! So many great tracks on here and fantastic sounds and the Audio Generator !!. It's a must listen to !! 👍🚀🎶🎸🎹🥁🎤🎷🎼✌🛸

I'm surprised this wasn't for Gary. 😆 This may sound crude today, but space rock barely existed in '72. It's an obvious outgrowth of the psychedelic scene of the late 60's. Besides Hawkwind, the band Gong and guitarist Steve Hillage are considered important figures in the genre's early days. As "Silver Machine" demonstrates, Hawkwind got a lot of mileage by just layering synth sound effects over some basic rock and roll (which would later inspire Richard O'Brien's "Let's Do the Time Warp Again" from Rocky Horror), with the solos stretching out for an eternity, all while a bunch of hippies got high and danced in the mud. Hawkwind -- never a very stable band anyways -- were never as popular in the states, probably because they spent most of their time on the UK/European festival circuit, plus they had strong associations with mind-altering substances that kept US record labels at a distance. Oh, and yeah -- Stacia (seen here unusually clothed.)
