Pioneer 10 Space Rock Series (1 of 12) So, this was originally meant for March 2nd of last year, which was the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Pioneer 10 space probe, but the shop was closed. P10 is the first man-made object to achieve the escape velocity needed to clear the solar system’s heliosphere (space nerd alert) and enter interstellar space. It won’t be the first to do so, as it’s going the long and opposite direction of NASA’s later space probes. But still cool. Anyway, I thought it would be a good occasion to do a space rock series. Lots of distorted guitars, heavy synth, slow or soaring ethereal vocals, and sci-fi themes. It has a lot of crossover with the psychedelic rock I’ve sent before (and will again next month). Should be a good time; I’ve alternated older and newer tracks in the series in such a way that they should mesh pretty nicely. ----- Hawkwind has been around for over 50 years (though founder, vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist Dave Brock is the only constant member), and they have probably always been the biggest name in space rock, though they’ve moved through pretty much every rock subgenre in that time and have even retroactively gained some punk cred for some of their stuff. This track is from their third studio album, 1972’s “Doremi Fasol Latido.” It’s the first album featuring bassist and metal god Lemmy Kilmister during his four years with the band before getting fired and forming Motörhead (named after the last song he wrote for Hawkwind). He thought he was being hired as a second guitarist, but the bassist never showed up so he taught himself bass on stage with the bass the previous guy had left behind.

Welcome to the unique sound of Hawkwind. Their early albums were magical. Their live double album The Space Ritual is one of the greatest live albums of all time in my view.

Dave Brock, "The Captain," is still touring and charting records (UK) with his Hawkwind band at age 81 ... for the 7th time in the last 11 years. Fun fact, in 1957-8 Dave taught Eric Clapton how to play guitar and they busked as a duo.

Love Hawkwind too. Found my way to them in 70’s as fan of Michael Moorcock fantasy books and when I found out that he played with them for awhile I had to check them out. No regrets. Agree Space Ritual double album. Have to dig it out today

Hawkwind are quite simply, THE best band in the known universe (for those in doubt, listen to their whole back catalogue from when they began in 1970 to the mid 80's especially. Their lyrics and music are more relevant than ever. The are the real deal, a true people's band who were never in it for fame nor money, they were there to be a voice of the true 'counter culture' and to help sterr people away from the corrupt 'corporate dystopia' that has slithered it's way into more and more people's lives this last several decades especially. Hawkwind represent the 'wholesome' in life, they represent what life is supposed to be really about, namely, people living in real community in tune with Mother Nature)

In my humble opinion Hawkwind are one of the best live bands ever, I have been lucky to experience Hawkwind many many times. The first time I saw Hawkwind live was at the Leas cliff hall in Folkestone Kent in the early 80s it was the Choose your masks tour, my teenage mind was blown!!!! Hawkwinds back catalogue is vast and incredible with something for everyone, a couple of recommendations of tracks to listen to are Quark strangeness and charm, Orgone accumulator, Levitation, Motorway city, PXR5, Damnation ally but many more are available. Stay high stay free, all the very best to all, 👍👍👍🤯🇬🇧.

Hawkwind is one of my favorite groups. I'm a huge SF/fantasy nerd, so when they do songs based on Michael Moorcock, Roger Zelazny, Isaac Asimov and others I was all over it. My first two albums of their (and still two of my favorites) were "Warrior on the Edge of Time" and "Quark, Strangeness and Charm". There's some amazing stuff on both of those, but the one I'd recommend checking out is actually two consecutive songs that blend together, "Assault and Battery" and "The Golden Void".

At last some top reactors do Hawkwind! I've been a fan since the late 1970s and seen them live quite a few times. The live version of this I feel is better with the live spoken/poetry into about space. Still, you've done Hawkwind now!

For me the magical part of this track is the way the backing instruments start off as largely acoustic (apart from the noise gen/audio gen/synth sounds) then from about 7:00 (on your vid) the electronics start to build and build eventually swamping the acoustics leading to the emphatically electronic ending.
@delbertogrady6824

And then right at the end the acoustic guitar leads you out of the track. Brilliant.

Ah youth ... where are ou ??? !:) It make me feel nostalgic... For the little history, Mickael Moorcock (Eroic fantasy author known for the Saga "Elric the Necromancer") has wrote some lyrics (and even participate as singer in "Warrior on the Edge of Time") in 3 or 4 albums from Hawkwind. The album "The Chronicle of the Black Sword" had as thema The Elric saga. It was because I was reading M. Moorcock books that i listened Hawkwind at the first time ....

Synths? Synths didn't exist as we think of synths when this was recorded, they had to create their own instruments using audio generators and oscillators through guitar pedals!

hawkwind were totally unique- they did not seem to be influenced by anybody and they did not appear to have much influence on anybody else either but they were something else- just a mix of pounding bass, saxes, synths ,and loads of other stuff chucked in for good measure- great vocals by lemmy , dave brock and nik turner, occasional lyrics by total nutter robert calvert- and accompanied by a naked dancer on stage " whats not to like?
@jkorshak
@jkorshak 7 месяцев назад
There is a strong krautrock influence with Hawkwind. Space is Deep is a prime example of that. German bands Kraftwerk, Neu!, Faust, and producer Connie Planck were a heavy influence on Hawkwind's rythmic "driving" or "motorik" sound. Their space rock sensibility was an offshoot from Pink Floyd when their set included space or scffi themed material. Of course, Hawkwind has its own unique sound but German Motorik and the space program and space race culture, as well as the fantasy of Michael Moorcock were hugely influential on their sound and their direction.

Great reaction guys. Space rock is singing about space with weird spacey effects, electronic sounds and whooshes over stoner rock, punk, heavy metal, prog, acoustic folk, psych or just heavy rock. Hawkwind moved away from the space stuff after 74 but have covered lots of different styles and there's always good tunes going on. They've been described as Pink Floyd's scruffy noisy younger brother. It's a cool fan vid but the disaster bits don't match the song! Hawkwind did 'something going wrong in space' a few times, like Uncle Sam's On Mars (a great track to react to). Would be good to hear your reaction to Urban Guerrilla or Sword of the East. Space Is Deep is one of my favourites, it has a slight reggae lilt. If people can wet themselves over Kashmir they can wet themselves over this!

Drinks? Screw ethanol, this calls for acid! I used to drop 8-12 hits, depending on my supply but I have the tolerance of a woolly mammoth so if you haven't built up a tolerance then 4 hits would be a reasonable first dose. These numbers seem high but what you can score today isn't close in purity when compared to what was available back in the day. Keep some weed around in case your comedown is less than pleasant. Of course smack would chill you out but not everyone is into that.
