The piano world’s new star proves his musical creativity in a genius response to a mobile phone, during an intimate Gershwin solo.
Hayato Sumino, who also goes by the name Cateen, was playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Ben Palmer, when the moment of interruption and inspiration occurred.
“It’s in a musician’s nature to instinctively react to the sounds that they hear around them - even when making their Classic FM Live/Royal Albert Hall debut,” Hayato said afterwards.

This feels especially appropriate during Rhapsody in Blue, since Gershwin wrote it while drawing inspiration from the sounds of the city - the rattling of a train car, etc.

Respect to the artist. He is giving a show to everyone who came. On the other side the dude with the phone, you had two jobs, sit and and turn off your phone. If you are a doctor, put it at least on vibration. How hard can it be, you also managed to dress yourself, drive to the concert and find your seat.

I used to record choral performances and it seems like inevitably someone would be sitting within three feet of one of the mics coughing up a lung or two. You can almost count on this kind of stuff. I saw one world class classical pianist on a YT video that started a concert, and the sustain pedal was stuck on. How in the heck does THAT happen???? She was funny. She explained the problem, asked for a new piano, and then said, hmmm, what can we do with this while we wait. A joy to watch The piano was moved to the stage lift, with her still playing while it was moved as she was lowered down, out of sight. Sh then came back up on the lift playing the replacement piano. I can't remember who the artist was, but IIRC she had an accent, a pretty one. I'm pretty sure you could find it on YT with a search, as that is where I saw it. I wonder how many times that story has been told over the years by those in attendance. And I wondered if she got as much of a kick out of it as the audience did, or if it was a 40 gauge, bring me my brown pants moment. Either way, she INCREASED the audience entertainment, making some delicious lemonade out of a really nasty lemon. Sorry for the metaphor fest. :-)

He also writes his own works, and does some amazing silly things like his Flight of the Bumblebee incrementing to 250 bpm, on a TOY piano. Always playful and fun. I sent his original work to a friend of mine who is a PhD in mathematics and did leading edge work in both pushing the envelope in a specific branch, and a lot of work for Wall Street developing derivative mathematics. He now profs at a high end university. His response, when I told him all about Hyato, was, "Humbling".

This is a real issue in classical music today. I am a professional classical performer and frequent concerts, every concert now a phone goes off. Hate to say it but it’s mostly older people because they don’t know how to silence their smart phones. Either that or they don’t care enough to try. Old people also have watches that go off a lot and they talk unabashedly as if nobody can hear them. I am grateful for the elderly folks who make up most of classical audiences but the phone thing is a huge problem that concert halls need to be more strict on.

Just love the violinists response in the background - clearly a bit amused by embarrassed by her admiration for him. It is great that he didn't care too hoots about the pretentious English audience - they really have nothin' to offer in classical music.

RHAPSODY IN BLUE!? AAAAAA! Wow. Incredible comedic timing and skill. Also? Seeing it played live is so intensely amazing. Thank you Fantasia for the knowledge.

Melody... style? reminds of Debussy or Yiruma soft and peaceful compositions:)
