Hayley is indeed not only a wonderful singer but a wonderful, gentle, loving person, as those of us who've been lucky enough to meet her can testify to.
Im a serving army soldier and its great to see our sacrifice being recognised by hte Queen. Hayley Westenra is the best choice for this as she has an amazing voice and has great poise. Kia Kaha to everyone of Ngati Tumatauenga. A McMaster 3ANR
As a American, watching this dedication I want to say thank you to our allies who served alongside us during WWII. God save the Queen. God bless America.
My Dad was in the Navy and traveled all over.. He said New Zealand was hands down, the most beautiful country in the entire world. I'm going to visit NZ, to honor my Dad and the Kiwis.
I am Maori and a member of the Returned Services Association...this stuff is good for my tear ducts! I am so proud of my people, my Iwi, my Whanau. The beautiful Hayley honours our country and our people with her lovely voice.
For those who say that the Queen did not express any emotion during the anthem - I think you need to look at her eyes, there was emotion there. New Zealanders stand proud because our people went off to war to defend freedom and peace. We have tried hard to right the wrongs of colonialism and work hard in the world to resolve conflict. We stood strong against nuclear testing in the Pacific. The older I get the more it means to me to hold on to tradition. That includes the queen & our pride.
so enjoy the new zealand anthem being sung in both official languages of new zealand - maori and english - isnt that what "partnership" is about? hayleys singing of both anthems was a real treat. thank you new zealand - you continue to show the world that you truly are indeed the first nation! well done!!
This was at the dedication for the Southern Stand, a New Zealand War Memorial in Hyde Park Corner, London. Attended by the PM's of NZ and Britain, the Queen etc.
Being part Kiwi, my dad was a Kiwi, I am proud of my New Zealand heritage. listening to Hayley brings back memories some sad. my brother who was also a Kiwi passed recently, the funeral was a mixture of English and New Zealand music. Love Maori songs and loved visits to my other homeland.
@wwn6570 I agree. If she was not thinking "God, my feet hurt!" then she may have been remembering a much happier time in her life, 1954 in New Zealand. God Save the Queen!
More than that, New Zealand is a Dominion. Like Canada, and Australia (for now), the Queen is the Queen of New Zealand, the Head of State, represented locally by a Governor-General.
Thanks. You are quite gracious. As it happens I'm a US Army trauma surgeon soon to retire as a Colonel. Seven deployments in as many years has been enough. With the kids all in college, my wife, also a physician and British subject, and I are planning our next adventure. NZ is top on the list along with GB. The problem with GB is that none of our credentials are recognised. NZ and Australia make the move quite easy. We both want to teach. We've had warm welcomes from several universities.
Forty-two percent of men of military age served in the NZEF. 16,697 New Zealanders were killed and 41,317 were wounded during the war - a 58 percent casualty rate. Approximately a further thousand men died within five years of the war's end, as a result of injuries sustained, and 507 died whilst training in New Zealand between 1914 and 1918. New Zealand had the highest casualty and death rate per capita of any country involved in the war.
New Zealand holds a rare position in the world in that it has two national anthems of equal standing - 'God Defend New Zealand' and 'God Save The Queen'.
Totally agree, the Queen does not show any emotion during anthems, it's just the done thing, not any disrespect at all... Queen Elizabeth the 2nd has been on the throne over 60 years and heard many anthems, giver her a break chaps... please... God Bless You Maam...
Yes. I knew a South African surgeon in Australia. He actually worked with Christaan Barnard. He was having difficulties having his credentials recognised in Australia. I suggested he move to New Zealand and work there. Once he had worked in New Zealand, and had his credentials amended/enhanced, he could then move back to Australia, as New Zealand practicing surgeons can work in Australia and vice versa. I am sure the same applies to GB. (more)
The days are coming where all nz will be singing the anthem in all the stadiums and with gusto, for all will turn to the God of heaven and earth. Psalms 22.27 says all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord
No nations are ruled by Britain. All our former colonies are independent now. The handful of Overseas Territories remain under British sovereignty by choice.
Beautiful version of the British National Anthem. I believe New Zealand lost a higher % of it's population than any other country in the British Empire during WW2. What can I say? Thank you - my dad was in Bomber Command and met many Kiwis. I am a member of the C of E Mother's Union and the first overseas branch was in New Zealand - evidence that many of the earliest settlers were farming stock from the south of England. As for the man who said the British Army traditions were "stuck up and dead" compared with the Haka .... total disregard of different cultures, which isn't helpful. We must strive to respect other's cultures as far as possible, not be in competition as in those days of empire.
I believe Britain lost about 0.91%, NZ about 0.72%, Australia 0.52%, Canada about 0.12% . but yes probably the most of Commonwealth nations. Britain losses also included civilian deaths where as NZ's were totally military.
One of the best things to come out of NZ is their national anthem & yeah what do you expect the Queen to do during a national anthem a bloody handstand and a jig? Seriously what does anybody do during a national anthem? Thats right, stand their and soak it in
NO, that is the case in Canada and Australia but NOT NZ. Look at the website of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage of New Zealand. It is the only country in the world with TWO official national anthems.
That wasn't New Zealand. That was London. 'God Save the Queen' is one of TWO official anthems of New Zealand. Elizabeth II is the Queen of New Zealand. Therefore, Hayley, a good Kiwi girl, was singing BOTH of the national anthems of HER country and in front of HER Queen.
Look at 2:18 into the video. At 3:15 you also get a close up of the Prime Minister, Helen Clark. (For a while, the Governor-General, Chief Justice, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition were all women).
"My Country, 'Tis of Thee," also known as "America," is an American patriotic song. The melody is DERIVED from the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen" -- the world's oldest national anthem written in 1745!!! GSTQ is also ONE of TWO official anthems of NZ.
It's OFFICIAL. Equal standing. Go to the Ministry for Culture and Heritage of New Zealand website. It is there and in those exact words: EQUAL STANDING.
TheNationalistParty. Yes. I agree with you. New Zealand has done some shameful things. Not recognising the USSR is one of them. My father was badly wounded in WW2. He said that the Japanese soliders mass murdered by New Zealanders at Featherston, New Zealand was an attrocity. He told me that this deed was to New Zealand's everlasting shame. I think my dad was right.
THIS HAPPENED IN SOUTH AFRICA AS WELL I LOST FAMILY AND THE FEW RETURNING NOT GIVEN A HOME TO LIVE IN RATHER A FEW ITEMS BITS OF CLOTHING A FEW CARPENTER TOOLS AND SOME A BIKE NOT MOTORISED AND THE POLITICIANS GLORIOUS APARTHEID SYSTEM KILLED WHAT WAS LEFT IN DIGNITY
@c00per69 It's God Save Our Gracious Queen at the start, the it goes to God Save the Queen. So depending on where Canadians sing God Save our Queen it could be wrong out right aha, but in New Zealand God Save the Queen is also the national anthem (but not sung often)
It's called the Haka. It's a traditional Maori challenge to battle. It may be used to commemorate heroic action, especially actions in which the Haka was a prelude, as certainly occurred in North Africa in WW2. The All Blacks are so good at performing it now they are considering dropping the Rugby:)
O great! At least you are not having a go at Helen. I can't agree with you. There is nothing wrong with the Queen. She is the one of the few English people who loves New Zealand.
I may be wrong here, but at 3:07 I think that it should be ah-toh-rah, not ah-too-rah. And at 3:31, I think that it should be ko-teh-pai, not ko-tee-pai. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't sung the national anthem in ages and she's been doing it for a long time.
