As a Samoan the welsh anthem always makes me cry obviously i dont understand the lyrics but my heart feels the pride and passion when Hen wlad fy nhadau is sung🇼🇸🏴🇼🇸🏴
There you are , the words in English -The song talks of Wales' rich heritage and culture of poetry, music, patriotic heroes, linguistic pride and, of course, Wales' inimitable landscape. It translates as the following: 1. This land of my fathers is dear to me Land of poets and singers, and people of stature Her brave warriors, fine patriots Shed their blood for freedom Chorus: Land! Land! I am true to my land! As long as the sea serves as a wall For this pure, dear land May the language endure for ever. 2. Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets, Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards; Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be Her streams and rivers to me. 3. Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot, The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat, The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.
@@janisjohanson9190 thank you for this. I think the Welsh national anthem is by far the best, and the people sing it with such gusto and pride. It was also interesting to see so many of the former British colonies have included aboriginal lyrics (some without English even). The British to me ranks last - nothing about the country or people, just one person.
When I first started watching rugby I picked my favorite teams (per game) based on how many players sang, and how enthusiastically the sang it. Wales andScotland always scored high.
@@sandychristie9712 its close but if you add the english opposition not true, Scotlands problem is they chose a funereal dirge when it was supposed to be a national anthem
The welsh national anthem is and will always be the best. Its emotional, its proud and nothing makes me prouder to see my team, the fans all singing united this magnificent piece. Im so proud of my country 🏴🏴
@@WelshRaptor367 We all entitled to our opinions. I am South African so no overt bias in me preferring the Scots and NZ ones. The Welsh one would only be about 6th on my list.
I agree that Flower of Scotland is the most beautiful but man, a stadium full of Welshmen singing their anthem can stir the blood and bring a tear to the eye of just about anyone. I was particularly impressed with the beauty of New Zealand and South Africa's anthems, each sung in two languages.
@@alastairross9169 Oy. I think the Italian anthem is one of the most unattractive and that's so disappointing because I'm a huge fan of everything else Italian.
Nothing like when the ‘uit die blou van onse Hempel’ starts. It’s goes up twice the decibels. Love our anthem, but that Scottish one does it for me every time. Same with the Wales one. Goosebumps
As a welsh man the Welsh anthem is far superior to me but the Scottish and south African comes 2nd and 3rd followed by the French anthems as for 5th I don't really have a 5th. Make it football then the German would defiantly be in top 5. As a welsh man i love our anthem and after Scotland changed to flower of Scotland, this is mainly due to the anti English sentiment within the song, as the Welsh anthem could be said to use. to be Welsh and Scottish means not fking English.
IM Irish and I love both our anthems. Its flower of Scotland sends shivers up my spine when it's sang in Murray field . Even when they play Ireland. The lone piper on the roof just kills me
i want to go in murrayfield for this reason. I'm italian but I dream to sing flower of scotland all together. goosebumps, man! Anyway just one week to this 2023 6 nations, i can't wait and good luck!
There is nothing like it - especially sung in Cardiff Arms Park. I love the SA one as well though - no idea how England got in there, or how Scotland was number 1. For me, it's Wales with France and SA joint second (and I'm English!!).
I will never be able to decide which one is the "winner" between the Welsh and the Scottish anthems, both give me the same amount of chills. Greetings from Romania to both nations!
What every rugby fan knows: 1: Wales 2: South-Africa 3: Scotland 4:Ireland 4:France 4:Italy 4:Argentina 5:New-Zealand 5:Australia 10: Any song rather than "God save the queen"
with which ignorance do you put the ireland's call so low? I am italian and i have lived and love scotland but the ireland's call is undoubtedly above wales and south africa at least. scotland too.and the way we (italians) sing the anthem should lead us above the french too, although they surely have a better anthem
Every National Anthem is the best. But being British !! I love the Scots, Irish and Welsh but, not necessarily in that order, as all three bring a lump to my throat when at a Rugby Match .
This is what makes rugby so much better than any other sport. In football the players have almost no interest in singing their national anthem. Rugby is just simply the best
Very true, in Scotland especially. We’ve got a poor national team because very few of the players actually care about playing for country. In fact, most of them drop out of the squad soon after getting picked
kwagga capetown as a big football fan (being Scottish and a Rangers fc fan) you have so much hate for the other teams (Celtic) you just want to take your anger out on them cause you have so much passion for trying to win. You would be surprised how happy we get when we win, still tears come out of my eyes, being so proud in our team, OUR home, and there is just this feeling of holding up your blue white and red scarf to the other teams and screaming at the top of your lungs, this is why we have certain chants, they all mean so much to us like take every Saturday we follow for example, “every Saturday we follow, we cheer the boys in blue, most successful team in football, we’re Scotland’s gallant few, though times they have been hard, we’ve followed near and far, you will always hear us roaring, from the stands at Ibrox park!” They mean so damn much to us! It’s OUR way of having pride.
I may be proudly Australian, but I am so glad certain countries were ahead of us on this list. Whilst the French anthem is my personal favourite, for it to be beaten by the Welsh and Scottish ones was a more than fair call.
@@markusventer7399 How will SA fall? ...because you cannot oppress blacks again? Rubbish. If you don't like them, go to your country that is awaiting doom in the near future
@Jaques Swart dont worry i am a coloured living in mitchells plain and we do not hate white people we love them and i am not saying we dont like black people we are just to similar to white people in the way we do things like celabrating the holidays and stuf like braai and yes of course a leka dop hopefully blacks can forgive whites as most of coloureds have and if that happens SA will beat the dollar becease then we will give the jobs to the people best suited for the job and thrive
All anthems are sung with passion, especially when at home, by their fans. So you cannot put an order on them. As a proud Welshman, I sing my anthem loud and proud if I am there or watching at home on TV, until the emotions get the better of me and the tears come, and then its a case of powering through. The Anthem is a way of letting the away team know, you are in OUR house so you'd better raise your game. Its what I love about world rugby.
It’s a great shame that all anthems are not sung by choirs at every Rugby World Cup match! Australia did this in 2003 and the crowds roundly applauded them for such a colossal effort. I hope they do it again in 2027!
@Ben Moffat ok as a American ( don’t hate me ours is crap that’s bcoz I as a american know the history ) heres my pick La marseille God defend New Zealand Fratelli d Italia Advance Australia fair Flower of Scotland ( once you hear the bagpipes you’re done ) O Canada ( I am a hockey fan )
Being Welsh I love my anthem, I live in Auckland so my son will grow up learning Maori and the New Zealand anthem... In this video I was actually at the Scotland Wales match that this anthem was filmed, the sky was dark blue and cold but when the bagpipes stopped the atmosphere was electric... It was incredible
I love my nz anthem sung in both Maori & English , brings me to tears every time , but the Welsh & south African anthems are so uplifting & for some reason I find myself humming along when i hear their anthem, & I'm not even Welsh or African
I absolutely love that NZ anthem..... gives me goosebumps. Wales & Scotland also have beautiful anthems and their fans sing with great passion. Good tidings from South Africa!!!
I lived in your wonderful country for a year and learnt the anthem. Wales is God’s country but a few changes needed to be made so he created New Zealand
This wasn't a national Scottish song. I don't think - it sounded sassenac , not Scottish. Sung with passion, which is always to be admired. But not an indigenous tune.
@@sharone976 It's what we use as our national anthem for Sporting events. There is a fair amount of Scots Dialect throughout the whole song "O'Flower of Scotland" "Yer Wee Bit Hill and Glen". O'Flower of Scotland, actually has 3 verses and one of the lines is "O'er land that is lost now". It's pretty much our freedom and the history of our wee country.
I hope this list is in no particular order. Honestly England anthem can't surpass South Africa and New Zealand anthems and Ireland. That's my top 3 ever.
As a german with no relations to rugby whatsoever I had the pleasure to watch Ireland vs. Scotland in Edingburgh a few years ago. I have to admit that both national anthems are very powerful to listen to when it is live with all the fans singing along. But it were the pipes and drums marching in and playing „Scotland the Brave“ which gave me goosebumps.
I dunno if you are a football fan but, if you are. Then, you should listen to Chile's anthem. Especially, the one that was against Spain, back in the 2014 world cup n_n
I am Welsh so I am biased but before I watched this video I had already said to myself Wales/Scotland/France would be top 3 so almost agreed with the outcome here, would not have argued with any of those taking the top slot. I am a little surprised that England and God Save the Queen made it on this list at all, but as I said I am Welsh and I am biased. I also like the Italian it just sounds like so much fun. Not a fan of the Choirs or singers leading anthems they always sing too fast for the stadium crowds.
The English Anthem is top 3, it is very iconic (I am not English). The Welsh one is nothing special in my opinion, it is not memorable. Scottish is definitely better.
Paul K yeah I agree and both Scotland and wales weren't even at their home or there would have been better versions....I'm a Scot so a little biased but the Welsh at home is a sound to behold so I'd not have disagreed if wales was number 1
Im English and God Save the Queen is so boring, it should replaced with Land of Hope And Glory. For me its the Welsh Anthem in the Principality, The Welsh language makes the singing almost mystical and of course the passion, it reminds them they are Welsh.
South Africa has by far the most beautiful anthem. It sounds great and the fact that they have multiple languages in it makes it even better. Love from Germany
Just one small point, the welsh anthem is song in their mother tongue, unfortunately the Irish and Scottish anthems are not only very recently brought about, they are also sung in English,by the way I must add that the English still haven't got an anthem of their own,oh dear how sad never mind, diolch
Wales have by far the most beautiful anthem, and it's not even close. The incredible polyphony and the emotion they put in it. Knowing a bit of their history, and the meaning of the anthem, it puts tears in my eyes, even though there isn't one Welsh bone in my body. I'd rate Argentinean anthem 2nd, that is when the sound engineering of the broadcast is at least remotely competent and the acoustic delays don't render it ridiculously out of sync.
@#CHOOSELIFENOTAKNIFE Cheers mate. Been to Cardiff twice (both cases to watch the Welsh team play an international test match). Lovely historical city, nice people. (btw. Wales won both of those games, so I suggest WRU starts to send me free match tickets :) ) Cymru Am Byth!
@#CHOOSELIFENOTAKNIFE Kind of you to offer that, mate. But I'll gladly pay the admission. A lot of it goes to WRU and regions. Tell you what: next time I'm in Cardiff, we'll have a pint after a good game of rugby. But I've got to warn you: I'm a Scarlets supporter (I'm assuming, you're a Blues fan).
I think Wales should be number 1, especially and specifically in 2013 in their game against England. It was one of the most emotionally charged things I've ever witnessed. Another solid mention is the Anthem for Shane Williams' last match
I'm South African, and after my own anthem New Zealand's anthem is the very best. I love it so much, feels as though I might have been a Kiwi in my past life.
I am catalán, and I follow USAP ...I agree that french, welsh and scottish should be in the top...but South Africa should be in a higher position too.I love Scotland and I am a celtic and scottish fan,but when I listen to the lyrics, maybe I would chose Welsh anthem first, French second and Scottish third.
South Africa Anthem will always be next level stuff. It's isn't even a song, it is a poem, a prayer done in FIVE different languages. Imagine they're ranking us only 7th.
As a Welshman I admit I'm probably a bit biased but I think its 1. Wales, 2. South Africa, 3. Scotland, 4. Italy, & 5. Argentina though it's all about opinions.
Just for myself. 10. Argentina Sean eternos los laureles que supimos conseguir, que supimos conseguir. Coronados de gloria vivamos... !o juremos con gloria morir!, !o juremos con gloria morir!, !o juremos con gloria morir! 9. New Zealand E Ihoa Atua, O nga Iwi! Matoura, Ata whakarongona; Me aroha roa. Italy Fratelli d'Italia, L'Italia s'è desta; Dell'elmo di Scipio S'è cinta la testa. Dov'è la Vittoria? Le porga la chioma; Ché schiava di Roma Iddio la creò. Stringiamci a coorte! Siam pronti alla morte. Siam pronti alla morte, L'Italia chiamò. Stringiamci a coorte! Siam pronti alla morte. Siam pronti alla morte, L'Italia chiamò. Sì! 4. England God save our gracious Queen, Long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the Queen! 3. 2. Wales Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi, Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri; Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd, Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed. Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad, Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau, O bydded i'r heniaith barhau. 1. Scotland O Flower of Scotland, When will we see Your like again, That fought and died for, Your wee bit Hill and Glen, And stood against him (against who?), Proud Edward’s Army, And sent him homeward, To think again. Those days are past now, And in the past they must remain, But we can still rise now, And be the nation again, That stood against him (against who?), Proud Edward’s Army, And sent him homeward, To think again.
"and stood against him, proud edwards army, and sent him homewards, to think again" it's not an anthem it's a war cry....love it Scotland, from Australia!!

@@BlatanTripoff-uv6nq oh dear foes the truth hurt, firstly the welsh anthem is the oldest, plus I prefer because I'm welsh, also I'm nit afraid to put my name,if others have your permission to have an opinion why not me,if your Scottish ,wish I hope you are, check the rugby score, hee, hee
Wales is the only one that even deserves the top spot. I think every rugby fan can admit that, there is no experience like hearing the welsh national anthem belted out in the Millennium Stadium.
This list should be tagged “in no particular order.” The correct order (in my hardly humble opinion) is 1. Wales, 2. South Africa, 3. Scotland/Australia 5. New Zealand/France 7. Ireland (with special commendation for uniting a team under difficult circumstances) 8. Argentina (though I admire their enthusiasm). Tied for dead last, no matter how many more are listed: England (please know I still love you) and Italy (is that the circus theme? Again, love the enthusiasm). In case you wanted to know the CORRECT order, now you have it. You’re welcome.
I think top 10 it should be: 1. Wales 2. Scotland 3. Italy 4. South Africa 5. Ireland 6. New Zealand 7. Argentina 8. Australia 9. France 10. England All they say is “God save the Queen” I think you need the new anthem England!
Interesting comment, because a great many of us Aussies dislike our national anthem, and feel that it was a poor choice. The chorus, which was sung here, is fine, but the verses are quite a letdown, being dreary, dated and cumbersome. New Zealand has a wonderful national anthem, incorporating both English and Maori.
14:37 The young lads singing the anthem really is special. They are the future and they will pass this anthem on to the next generation and so on and so forth.
Wales and Scotland at the top as an Englishman this makes me very happy the Welsh and Scottish anthems are amazing, better than the dirge that is God Save the Queen.
In my personal opinion top 10 would be as follows: 1.-Scotland 2.-Cymru 3.-South Africa 4.-France 5.-Italy 6.-New Zealand 7.- Ireland (although if they still used Amhrain na bhfiann it would probs be higher ranked) 8.-Australia 9.-Argentina 10.-England
Alistair Dodds i have to agree about Amhrain na bhfiann No Disrespect but New Zealand National Anthem Sounds like when the Grinch sang with the Mayhoos at Christmas ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c9NoXo6qz2A.html
Your top 2 are the same as mine, not only because I'm Scottish, our anthem is absolutely beautiful as is the Welsh one, also I love to see the Italians singing theirs, the music is nice and they are always pumped right up, Respect to anyone from any country in the world who listens to/sings their anthem with pride, just open your mouth and let your heart do the singing
I have a similar reaction to their passion. While I really dislike the Italian anthem, I love watching them sing it. They’re having a blast ! I love them for it.
People disagree on who should be 1st 2nd 3rd etc.. which is fine, it shows different opinion's. But I'm delighted to see that one thing everyone has in common is the acknowledgement that God save the queen should not be on this list :)
im from new Zealand and tbh I love south Africa's anthem as well as wales n Ireland in my opinion 1. South Africa and New Zealand tied... love ours as its emotional but Africa truly got a beautiful anthem 2.Wales and Ireland ( Ireland's original anthem) tied the rest I don't mind ..
I love the Scottish and the welsh anthem but I think the Scottish just makes it number one purely because of the passion in the crowd and the players, I’ve been to Murrayfield and it’s possibly the greatest thing I’ve ever felt after singing ur national anthem with thousands of others
As a Welshman I disagree - the person that made this video picked the wrong clip: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AM4mIlYKG9s.html&ab_channel=JulianZee
Just one small point on your decision, how old is the Scottish anthem, did you know they used to sing the British anthem, god save the Queen, which is song in English, not in the Scots mother tongue.
As a proud die hard All Black's Kiwi...my 2 favourite National anthem (Emotional) other then N.Z and Samoa is SCOTLAND and SOUTH AFRICA. Sends shivers down me spine everytime I watch RUGBY and these National Anthems are sung with Pride and Passion ❤❤❤❤❤
I'm a All Black fan through and through but the South African anthem absolutely killed them all ,and the great Jean De Villiers very emotional, got to love the spirit of Rugby Union.
to tell you the true, from an italian, I find very "charging on" the marseillese, that's a revolutionaries' song. The Italian too is very moving, but with a vain of suffering, after all it' s a march of young voluntaries going to fight against organized army! I find very emotianal "Ireland call", that seems a glance to ireland reunion. Musically talking the best anthems, commemorating a celebrating a nation are, from first to last: the Russian, the german and English ones.
As a welsh person I believe welsh should be in first , goosebumps everytime - we sing our anthem with so much passion even the players do , 2nd I have to give to New Zealand then Scotland . Don’t come at me pls
Amog rugby's Giants, sounds proudly and glorious Italian National Athem. "Brothers of Italy" Is the Song of a nation not usualy knowed for an original way to the rugby's game, but thath has mirrored itself in scrum, struggle in closed spaces, sacrifices and pains. I Hope in growing up of rugby in Italy,a sport and however a life's style whose we always Need .
I've been to the corners of the earth and it's clear that it's 1. Wales, 2. S. Africa, 3. Scotland, 4. Ireland and 5. New Zealand. Admire everyone opinion but they've got this one wrong...
Nicholas Williams u have cleary not been to scotland mate we sing with our voices in wales they get big speakers and play it loudly so it sounds loud south africa have a singer with a mic helping them sooo its clear that its SCOTLAND
I personally think that Wales deserves to be anthem no.1. Not that I've got anything against Scotland, it's just that I'm Welsh and think our anthem is best.
