This video completely demystifies the DE filter maintenance as well as dispels a few myths about what really happens when doing some accepted practices throughout the year. All steps are covered in this two part series as it relates directly to the DE system.
Including:
Discussing elements getting clogged with grease and minerals
How to test for this issue
Degreasing and demineralizing elements
Manifold test
Replacing o-rings
Cleaning mating surfaces
Seal lubrication
Reassembly
Preparing and adding DE to system
Testing and evaluation
Always determine the pressure of a new system at given speeds as a benchmark and record those value as a measurement of system health.

This is the only video I've seen that actually takes you through each step without skipping vital ones. Great job!

I wish I saw this earlier. I had washed my filter but didn’t do the degreasing step. Filter would go from clean to clogged in 15 minutes. It drove me crazy. Him showing filling the dirty element with water and not draining drive home the need for the 2 step cleaning at the end. Most filter cleaning videos never mention this step. Great job.

This is by far the most informative video. The recording of the PSI at different pump speed is good. Now that I am not that worry my filter pressure is abnormal as I was always concerned if I add too little DE that didn’t coat it enough or DE blow out from the return that makes the pressure less than 5 psi at 1300-1500 speed.

Thats the best way to keep track of a normal system and when its time to service it.

Thank you for the Muriatic Acid tip. My pool filter, baskets were all coated with rusty red. Muriatic acid solution removed most rusts. My Hayward filter grid elements were all cracked and broken, leaking DE into pool. Bought a new set of grid elements and put it in today. Your tips really helped. Thank you.

My only leak was at the big oring. I have a pleated cartridge system. I also use a 55 gallon bucket to soak my filters. I clean my filters after an increase of 10lbs. Pressure on the filter housing. Usually about 4 times a year. No DE sand! Good video!

Thank you for posting such an informative, clear video with great explanations. Very helpful. Question for you. I think I saw it the first time thru the videos, but could not find it when I went back thru them: For a fresh charge of DE after thoroughly cleaning the filters, I use 100% of the manufacturer's recommended charge (4.5#, in my case). What % of a full charge of DE should be added if I only do a backwash without cleaning the filters? Thanks for all your help. Eric

Thanks for these complete videos. I followed exactly as you showed, and made a dilution even a bit higher than what you stated at 15:1 ratio. Unfortunately it didn't work for me, I had a starting pressure of 20PSI, after the bath of 4 hours, it was exactly 20PSI again. If you could give me a hint I would gratefully $ thank you. A hint for other viewers. If at HD must buy HDX muriatic acid 31.45 % or anywhere also it must be 31.45%. NOT Klean Strip as it's already diluted and weak! It wont work.

Would it be advantageous to immerse the entire manifold with the grids and filter elements intact, into an acid bath, after hosing it clean? Less time consuming and less labor intensive. Is there any part of the assembly that can get damaged by the muriatic acid?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 2 года назад
It needs to be disassembled anyway for inspection, there are no shortcuts on a DE filter maintenance.

My 2009 DE4820 owner’s manual doesn’t show an O-ring but a “metal reinforcing band” that Hayward says NOT to lubricate. When I replaced the entire grid unit, I noticed that the replacement unit does not have the skinny filter piece coming out of the top. So either Hayward has changed things since 2009 or the unit I have is an aftermarket unit ?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 3 года назад
I have a separate video to replace the unit up on top which is in fact a replacement part from the company after mine had failed.

Have you ever come across the union nut connecting salt cell generator to pool plumbing splitting thru the threads? And if so, is split nut connector that I have seen online a suitable replacement? There is not enough pipe length to cut off and replace the union fitting.

This is so complicated compared to the cartridge filter. Have you thought about replacing it with cartridge filter?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 5 лет назад
If you keep the sock on the intake and run a salt chlorinator, this is hardly any trouble. I do maintenance manually, I really could get away with once a year doing backwashes only if I was lazy

Thanks so much for these videos. We have the same filter and have had more and more sand coming into the pool each year. Last year I believe ALL of the sand came back into the pool. We have had a company open and close the pool, and I always ask about the sand and they say the filter looks good. At closing I watched him clean and inspect it for any tears (although he didn't take it all the way apart like you). We need to solve this issue before opening the pool this season. What could cause that much sand coming into the pool? Could it be the manifold plastic pieces? I checked the spider gasket thinking that could cause it but it looks good. Thanks for your help.
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 4 года назад
this is most often due to weak points where the DE gets through the fabric or a crack in the manifold.

Its possible that there were minor nuances. and running changes in the pro-grid line. Don't let it dissuade you. Walk into a leslies with your parts if you get stuck and they can let you know if it was superseded.

what is the purpose of lubricating the large rubber gasket for the base cap?
@reeda.1105
@reeda.1105 4 года назад
I was having trouble clamping the containers together and having the brace flush with the outer lips of the container and the gasket was unliubricated and at the time seemed to make a large gap between the containers. It has been made apparent that the lubrication of the gasket was my shortcoming, but I would like to know the purpose of the large O-ring's lubrication
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 4 года назад
All of the rubber parts should be lubricated for many reasons the least of which is a protectant for the material itself.
