Wesley Magoogan's stunning sax solo and Hazel O'Connor's melancholy vocals have just reduced me to tears. I remember this so clearly from the 80s. Here I am, in my sixties, snivelling like a baby. Isn't music wonderful?
I agree wholeheartedly, as a 54yr man It brings me to tears, so emotional. Sad twist to this is that Wes no longer plays the sax due to a DIY accident where he lost some of his fingers. Utter travesty that he no longer plays.
I saw Hazel in 1980, the Breaking Glass tour (actually was on stage crew for the gig, at uni). Saw her again, a few years ago. I told her that this song always made me cry, and she laughed and called me a wuss. Proud to be a wuss, if I can keep hearing this song...
@@mandyhaynes1509 You are truly blessed. I would love to be called a wuss by Hazel, Toyoh, the immortal David Bowie or Suggs. I would feel immortal with a pedigree like that!
Close your eyes and listen. Just beautiful. A million times better than today's garbage. I am praying for you Hazel. Please get better soon and Thank You for your music.
I agree. This track is burned into my soul, where it will reside, for eternity. Dear Hazel, I also heard the news about your health. Those immortal lyrics now contain even more meaning for me..."its getting kinda late now, I wonder if you'll stay now". That got to me. Hope they come true for you. Get well soon my queen Hazel.
I've been listening to this for over forty years, and it is still as fresh and breathtaking as it was the first time I heard it. Absolutely incredible...
People. Don't fall for these "2024?" posts. Most of them are from spammers and every thumbs-up you give them is putting their spam account into good standing.
I heard about Hazel O'Connor's condition so, just wanted to wish her a speedy recovery. This is such a beautiful, criminally underrated song which, in a way, I like as it's always been such a secret passion of mine. You need to have a deep soul to appreciate the intensity of Hazel's performance here together with the stunning sax solo. This takes me way back to 1980 when I was very young & watched Breaking Glass. I think this was after Phil Daniels starred in Quadrophenia. Get well soon Hazel x
I can assure you it was not in any way underrated in either the UK or Ireland, where it went top 10 and stayed in the charts for weeks. I bought the single at the time and so did many of my friends. I still have it and still play it.
I wouldnt like to put a number on how many times I have listened to this and it gets me every time. I am sat here sobbing like a girl yet again, lol. Silly old bugger..........
@@grahamtowler9897 The music of today is absolutely terrible - I know older generations always say that about new music, but this time it really is true, absolutely no talent in pop music at all, it's all about image now, music is definitely the last thing considered.
@@RichardM-kv4uu There is some talent but plenty of dross, its more about image these days and looks. The music from the 60s to the 80s was so diverse that they are listened to by my age group and the youth of today too.Much of the present day music doesnt have the longevity
The saxaphone solo on this song is astonishing and set a whole new method òf briliance It set a whole new dimmension to popular music absolutley stunning
This should be an all time classic yet it's only real music fans who realise it.Every word sung wth passion and meaning .Best solo sax ever. This song reaches.into your soul.
Its ignored because its too gritty and shows the grim side of the music business and society. Hollyweird stole the visuals of Eighth Day for their bleh Tron movie. Art gets forgotten but trash gets promoted.
I`m no musician but i know when an instrument pushes my buttons. That melancholy sax just blows my mind and Hazel sings with just the right measure to bring this track together. I loved this piece of music when it first came out and i love it still. Just unbeatable.
This song makes me want to cry, so many memories, such a time to be growing up , I was 17 when this came out, my whole life ahead of me, Happy times, long ago
@@couldbeworseprobablywill654 That's not what underrated means! Underrated is the opposite of overrated - the number of people doing the rating has nothing to do with it. If the general consensus of opinion was that this song was rubbish, THEN you could say that it was underrated. But it isn't, so it's not.
Hazel O'Connor: Will You? (1981) Isn't this just one of the most beautiful recordings ever?! As well as the captivating vocal, there's the exhilarating alto saxophone solo interlude which closes the track. Haunting (in a good way). Featured in the film Breaking Glass in which she starred alongside Phil Daniels, Mark Wingett & many more.
A couple of weeks ago in the hot weather, the daughter had a 26th birthday party and BBQ. Dad (me) of course had to drive a few of her mates home in the cooling summer night, roof down on the old XR3i. This came on the memory stick and they all went silent, "WOW, that is the most beautiful song. Who is it?" and "Put it on again, again, again!"....came the remarks. It seems OUR taste for 70s/80s music is shared. Good taste hasn't died with the recent dreadful music scene afterall. I don't think I have ever made a music compilation with this track. The sax just makes the hair on my neck stand on end. If I had some on my head, that'd probably stand on end, too. Thank you for this track, Hazel.
This beautiful song unlocks hidden memories of being a youth growing up in what now seems such a surreal time? Making bonds with friends that will never ever be broken. Even when they are no longer with us. I play this and we are back together. Talking, laughing, loving life. Xxx
Blessings upon you. Hazel. Your songs, voiced so many years,as a teenager, where we were unable to find the words. Forever thank you and deep respect to you. Thank you.
with more years behind me , than in front.........shutting my eyes and listening to this stunning song , amongst many others ,being taken back to the years of real music . to never return. still puts tears in eyes
There are few songs that have the ability to stop you in your tracks when you hear it , and haven’t heard it for a while . This is one of them, it never fails to have this effect, the sax solo is just incredible, alas nothing like this classic exists in today’s music.
@@johnaustin4816 same here at 67 its still has that remarcable pathos to it which impoves with age was one of those rare albums that was the score for a film as well , Breaking Glass
This is a fantastic track, with such haunting vocals beautifully performed, So awesome, This should be an all-time classic yet it's only real music fans who realise it. Every word is sung with passion and meaning. Best solo sax ever. This song reaches. into your soul.
I was 15 when this came out. Taped it off the radio. Bought it on vinyl and wore it out. So beautiful. And that sax is just ridiculous. A great, great song. 😢
I had forgotten how music can bring back memories. late one evening my wife and I were returning home and this was being played on the radio. i just kept driving just so we could hear the sax solo. My wife passed away from this earth in May this year, but listening to this took me back years to being with her in the car that evening.
I eas 17 in 1980 & was in love for the first time with my darling Julie from Spinny Hill in Addlestone, Surrey, 5 tge Glen, this song always reminds me of those beautiful days, I wonder if you stay now, I wished you did, where ever you are in the world, Please take care, until we meet again, this song will always remind me of us, never to be, one day I hope we mee, John M x x x ❤❤
Met Hazel after a small venue gig several years ago, a fantastic wonderful woman, sat and talked for ages. The Industry made her and then destroyed her. Bless her she came back and is still back. This song will stay with me forever since when I first heard it on Radio 1 back in the mists of time. I love my Heavy Rock e.c.t.. But Hazel has a special place in my record collection. Have to watch Breaking Glass again now..
I have Breaking Glass on DVD Watch it at least once a month and saw Hazel a few years ago at Union Chapel, thinking about it ,it was quite a few years ago.
@@andyhance9448 I went looking for Breaking Glass on DVD a few years ago and the price was around £70.. so being a bit lets say devious found it on a certain website, enough said... Ahem.. Great film, think thats one for later today..
That's what she's telling us in the video, or who produced it. I don't believe artist back than had any saying on it. It's an evil business. Twisted, unhealthy environment. No one notices it by the comments
After reading your comment yes perfectly, looking at your profile how my life would have been made perfect if they had been with you beautiful. Sleep well.
Oooo that saxophone is just beautiful I could listen to that on a loop for hours. This song is not played anything like enough it’s certainly in my top 20 of all time favourites.
What an absolute bangin tune, surely one of the greatest sax solos of all time, makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, brilliant stuff, you just can't touch it. 👍
Totally agree !! A classic song , great vocal and a brilliant bit of sax playing by Wesley Magoogan who later went on to play on The Beat's 'Special Beat Service' album in 1982. You're right in saying that Hazel O'Connor was under rated. I think she has a great voice and is right up there with Annie Lennox, Sade, Kate Bush, Tracey Thorn, Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde .
Nuneaton's greatest ever. I worked and went out in Cov at the time. Centre of the universe then with TwoTone etc. This was, and still is an absolute classic. Loved it then and now. You're never too old to appreciate great music. The times when the NF were chased off the streets of Cov. A great city.
The song just came up from RU-vid whiĺe I was reminiscing. Hazel O' Conner and what a magical sax performance. It sends shivers through me. Makes being 61 years young feel great 👍
Hauntingly 'perfect'. Some music you can tap your fingers too, some music can make you dance. Some music has that capability to touch the soul in you and make you weep. This creation is by far, untouchable. Love you Hazel
Sit down, close your eyes, turn it up and loose yourself in this timeless classic, that gets better the more you listen to it. This is quite simply a masterpeice
Great film, great song!!! I was 6 at the time this film was released and I remember it vividly!! Always loved Hazel even though I was a mere child, I was an old soul for sure!! 🙏❤️
