The Springbank distillery is known for 3 different styles of whisky made at the distillery. The most common and popular is the eponymous Springbank. But aside from Springbank they also make, in much smaller quantities, the double distilled heavily peated Longrow Single Malt Scotch Whisky and the triple distilled un-peated Hazelburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Both of these are only made for two weeks of the year each and as such have much less stock again in the warehouse than Springbank. In fact, while we have enjoyed a multiple releases of Longrow 21 Year Old releases in the past this is only the 2nd release of the Hazelburn 21 Year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. However this may be the 2nd and final release for quite some time. Rumour is that both of these 21 year old releases from Springbank will take an extended absence after this release as the distillery tries to catch up and rebuild it's warehouse stock. Today I review samples of both of these rare and expensive Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. The Hazelburn 21 Year old Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky is curiously bottled at cask strength at 43.2% but remains non-chill filtred and natural colour. The Longrow 21 Year old Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky is bottled at a more typical 46% and non-chill filtred and natural colour. Both of these sample are of the 2023 releases. In this video I'll talk about this rumour, review and score these whiskies as well as compare them against each other. Thanks as always for watching. Cheers.

I have the Longrow 21 - still unopened. I passed on the Hazelburn 21 based on what information I could find. I was able to get the Longrow on sale. The Hazelburn was much more expensive. Glad to hear your views!

Yeah, I'd confidently say you made the right decision taking the Longrow 21(on sale no less!) over the Hazelburn 21. That's a win. Hope you enjoy the Longrow 21 when you crack it open Gary. Cheers 🥃

I had a dram of the Hazelburn 21 a couple of yrs ago at Springbank and I thought it was very good at the time, but yet to try the Longrow 21.

This was my 2nd time trying the Longrow 21 and it has been solid both times. I have heard great things about the 2022 Hazelburn 21 so I'm thinking this 2023 was just a few notches below the one you may have had. Hope a glass of the Longrow 21 crosses your path soon! Cheers Sandy🥃

I listened again and to the review of the 2022 Longrow 21 with 10% Chardonnay. I wonder if you can compare this 2023 with the 2022? I have a chance to get a bottle of the 2023 and was curious how they compare. I know you only had small samples, and it’s been awhile but any comments would be appreciated! Thanks

Hey Gary! That's a really tough one to answer so far removed from these. However, if I had to take a punt at an answer I would suggest the Chardonnay influence helped bring an inclusion of stone fruit but also a certain Vinous, slightly acidic note as well. There is much loved Longrow 17 Year Chardonnay Single Cask that has alot of fans. Sadly I never tried it but the 10% Chardonnay is 100% from that same parcel of casks. The only criticism seems to be how sweet/acidic it can go and a bit less body. If I was purchasing it would likely depend on #1 Is this my first/only Longrow 21? If Yes I would go with the more classic 65% Sherry 35% Bourbon makeup of the 2023 which is sure to be solid. #2 If this is not my first/only Longrow 21 I'd go with the more unique expression with the frankly odd inclusion of 10% Chardonnay Casks. Overall I don't know if you can really lose drinking Longrow 21 year :) Cheers Gary 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoast thank you - I actually have an opened bottle of the 2022 18 yo with Chardonnay and an unopened of the 2022 21 yo - i was thinking to add the 2023 21 yo cause it’s available and on sale. Still expensive - so i was wondering your thoughts…thanks again!!

Good review. At prices near 600-900 $CA, good luck. Plenty of good rums and cognacs to have. Price bubble bursted last year in Ontario, many DIego Xpedition on shelves for -20%-28% off already. A few years off is good for everyone. No loss, no regret.

Yeah, I did not enter any of the usual ballots for the "privilege" to purchase these two bottles. If I had to part with my money for one of these it would obviously be the Longrow. You're right about that price bubble bursting. I am seeing more and more reps talking about the downturn and how sales are down massively across the board. Tide is turning in the customers favour and I'm hoping the collateral damage to those in the industry is minimal. Interesting times to be certain. Cheers my friend🥃

Great comparison! I haven’t owned either, but would take the Longrow if given the opportunity. It’s funny you mention root beer and cola notes on it because I got them on the NAS (review pending) as well. Cheers, Matt!

Thanks Sheldon! We're on the same wavelength taking the Longrow 21 over the Hazelburn 21 and with those tasting notes. Hope you're on the mend feeling better shortly and back to reviews before we know it. Cheers buddy 🥃

I have a Springbank 21 and a Longrow 21 both unopened, I was lucky on a ballot. One day they will be opened but not today. Lucky for me I do live in the UK.

I admit, I am skipping a bit, but why will these not continue? Also, I agree with a few comments here. At these prices, I cannot justify bringing these home. My son needs help with his car accident, etc. The price is, well, insane! Glad you experienced them though. Cheers!

There are many people claiming that the distillery has said that both the Hazelburn and Longrow 21 will be taking an extended absence due to low stocks in the warehouse. I would interpret that as just too few cask of this age to make an outturn of around 3,600 bottles. This is not officially confirmed so it is by no means definitive, but there's enough talk of it that I received questions about it prior to trying these. I'm with you on the prices. I declined to enter a ballot for these two as I simply cannot afford whiskies of this price often, if ever. These all sold so clearly people with much more money than you or I and scooping these up but I'm with you, I can't in good conscious purchase these. Sorry to hear about your son Jon, I hope he's okay after the car accident. All the best to you and your family. Cheers 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoast Stock is often a challenge for that age for sure. Thanks for the good wished for my son. He's great, just about the machines involved. Which is good, machines are replicable.

I think you're doing it right - the only way to enjoy these whiskies at the price they're at is via samples. No notes on your scores; they sound about where I had 'em =D

Thanks for the vote of confidence with the samples. It really seems to be the only way to cover these higher age statements and rarer bottlings. Hope you're enjoying your SB 10 Pablo Neruda bottling. Cheers buddy 🥃

I found one of these last week in one of my local shops for a little over 600 do you think it’s worth pulling the trigger on?
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 5 месяцев назад
For the Hazelburn 21 year I wouldn't even think about it picking it up at full price. The Longrow 21 I would give some thought. Part of me says yes, but when my chance to enter the ballot for the Longrow 21 came, with it at a similar price, I did not enter the draw. I suppose that answers if I think it's worth it. If it was for an investment I'd consider it or if I personally had more money my answer could very well be different. Hope this helps. Cheers eh! 🥃
