HBO Directors Dialogues: Michael Haneke & Darren Aronofsky 

I would be so afraid to interview haneke as a director, mostly if I was a Hollywood director hahaha

Man, I greatly enjoy a lot of Aaronofsky films, but I don't think he is close to the same league as Haneke.

Haneke is one of the best filmmakers in the world. From an artistic standpoint he is a genius. But there's always this tug of war between art and commercial success

The White Ribbon was a masterpiece in direction and writing.

All the young actors and actresses in this film did a very impressive job.

I am a fan of Aronofsky but was disappointed by this interview. "Do you know who did it?" "Are they telling the truth?". These are just shallow questions that don't really add anything to the movie, and in fact if Haneke gave clear answers to them he would be be destroying the whole point of the film which is to make the audience decide for themselves what the truth is.

Two fantastic filmmakers. haneke is such a legend. his films are masterpieces that stick with me so long after viewing it. Can't wait for more :)

It's a joy to watch Michael Haneke discuss cinema and art with another fantastic director such as Darren Aronofsky. So glad that I found this interview.

Aronofsky, if you’re really interested in learning from Haneke, he’s teaching in Vienna, you can sign up to study there. As a matter of fact, after watching Mother! I think you *should*.

I just re-watched the white ribbon for probably the fifth time. And what I thought was a masterpiece on the first viewing keeps getting better over the years. I had to hear some discussion about the film and was glad to come across this video. Nothing better than Haneke himself to talk about his process. The information he divulges in this 10 minute video is absolutely stunning. Every aspect of this film from the casting, to the acting, to the script, to the cinematography, and certainly the directing, is absolutely top-notch.

Can someone explain how that guy in the middle translated without talking?

Aronofsky's out of his depth and completely lost. Why did he ask him " do YOU know who did it? " ? I don't think he understood it at all if he thinks that's a sensible question to ask, or that who did it even matters. You can see him try to not look like he's taking notes mentally, whilst simultaneously planning to steal every idea. He's just not got the skill or subtlety, which is why you can play spot the "reference" so easily with his efforts. Repulsion/Black Swan is an easy one to begin w.

Even Aronofsky cannot help but pull Haneke into surface-level questions like "Who is guilty?" and "Are the children fooling the teacher?" yet Aronofsky, in his mind, absolves himself of blame by remarking that just one scene from a Haneke film contains more complexity than entire Hollywood productions. Of course, Aronofsky is right in this observation, but it reflects poorly on Aronofsky that he offers this praise towards Haneke as an attempt to relieve himself of the embarrassment of choosing to interface with Haneke at such a shallow level. It's entirely possible that Aronofsky had no say in what the questions would be, yet wouldn't HBO producers AND Aronofsky research other interviews with Haneke to see the depth at which he is willing to discuss his work? This interview had great potential and it is entertaining but it failed to reach as high as it could have.

As you judge, so shall you be judged. The preaching of the parents to their children; then, the children judging their parents based on that preaching. I came to this video by chance, but I'm so pleased that I stumbled across it.

Das Weiße Band is the best movie he's ever made.

@rakeshgopinath Well, let's not go all TOO much into pointing fingers on who influenced who. I think Haneke's Cache stole a bit from David Lynch's Lost Highway, despite being one of my fave films ever. At least Aaronofsky, like Tarantino, knows how to steal only from the best. The problem is when people steal from the mediocre, which is most of Hollywood.

It always surprises me that Haneke never speaks English. Of course, he's not obliged to speak English, but he's fluent in German and French so I would assume he speaks English too.

Why are people hating on Darren, my man has made two of the best pictures ever(RFAD and black swan), arguably the fountain, that surely puts him at the top of directors even tho haneke it number 1

@anderzom well I just saw 'the white ribbon' and must say that i was hooked from minute one -- excellent film. And to answer your question: it's my humble opinion to think that the doctor was right to blame the kids, but i think that the father couldn't stand the fact that his method with the white ribbon doesn't work -- and in a catholic matter 'it's better to never talk about things, yet better keep indoors'. The firsttime we see the narrative character fishing, he meets the boy (martin)...

Shame US never embraced his cinema.

Great great movie!! saw it yesterday and as a Haneke fan I think he has done even better than funny games or the pianist.

@lordgumboot - That question was asked out of humor for Haneke, Aronofsky knows what he's doing - as an artist he's an observer. If his films are more evident in regards to their influences, it's not because he "lacks the skill", it's because he's a romantic. He (like Martin Scorsese and other filmmakers) loves film, like Scorsese, Polanski, Coppola, Spielberg and is more than capable of taking what's inspired him and making something completely his own - see "Pi" and "The Wrestler".

the boy who plays martin is hot

Why spoil the entire movie? It was a great reveal to me when (spoilers) they said world war 1 about to break out, and the thing with the children wasn't something I saw coming either. I feel sad that people would have seen this before the movie and not enjoyed the way Haneke reveals this information and all the tension is ruined for first time viewers :/
