Oh well, guess I'll go watch some films with zero animal cruelty. How about the talented Bryan Singer's masterpiece The Usual Suspects starring the maestro, Kevin Spacey. At least they didn't abuse any poor hamsters...

He's an uptight, self-righteous old fart who thinks he's somehow intellectually superior to others just 'cause he fails to separate the enjoyment of viewing art vs. reality. He sits on this moral horse where he arrogantly denounces those who enjoy violent cinema as immoral, all while making violent films of his own to please his desire to torture the audience. Before you Haneke fanboys argue "But Funny Games doesn't even show much violence!", I have this to say. Just 'cause a film doesn't show much in the way of gory details, doesn't make it no longer exploitative. Haneke's intention with that film was clearly just to torture the audience (something he has a fetish for), and in doing so, how is he any different to all those schlocky grindhouse directors who make bank by showing as much blood and tits as possible? When you're making something with the sole intention of shocking/disgusting the audience, you're pretty much making exploitation trash, regardless of what your moral intent was. Haneke is an idiot.
It is always pure gold listening these good advices from Haneke. The man is a great artist, and he is right, work and obssesion are the keys to become an great filmmaker.

I love Haneke films and his ideology of cinema. But he kinda suffers from a superiority complex. He gives great advice to young filmmakers but some of his interviews on different types of movies is just outrageous. Violence is a part of the system of life. It's the part of the ying and yang. Hence it's important to be displayed in film to which he highly objects ; while he tends to claim he is against the glorification of violence he then goes on to make statements which go directly against this , like claiming that Pulp Fiction glorified violence and made people laugh at death is ironic to be said by HANEKE because the filmmaker he admires the most Abbas Kiarostami {a legend imo} says that tarantino takes the tension out from violence by making it comedic. Also , His statement that Scorsese is a commercial filmmaker is absolute trash. Cinema has it's own roots in different countries and different cultures but adhering to the fact that the only kind of cinema that the audience should be given is the one he and other art-house European auteurs create (whom all i deeply admire) is wrong. Films that leave people with no questions on life or give them no existential crisis can still be good films. I can love films by Haneke while still loving Edgar Wrights films. I can admire films by Andrei Tarkovsky while still having the time of my life watching Tarantino flicks. The divide in people's views on cinema under a Michael Haneke comment section is too much for me to bear so I had to rant about it. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Yeah, Haneke often strikes me as a bitter old man with an overly serious, dour, cynical look on cinema that is both extreme and simplistic. Ever see Ratatouille? Haneke is just like Anton Ego. He often comes off humorless and overly obsessed with his intellect in interviews. He seems to not find any worth at all in cinema that isn't as overtly morally ambiguous or contemplative as his is. It's fine to have a certain type of cinema one prefers, but choosing to deride any and all other forms of film is just pretentious and closed-minded.
There’s nothing wrong with being uncomfortable with questions of morality becoming involved in the film discussion - the only reason you enjoy Hanake’s films is because he takes these questions so seriously and is genuinely passionate about the morality of his craft; a craft which is inherently extremely manipulative. It’s much easier to create a piece of propaganda than it is to tell the truth.
just wrote something similar under a different comment. some of these people are nauseatingly pretentious and self-involved. they get an ego boost from believing the art they like is superior to the art of the others. glad to see another person with my perspective in these comments. it's like they missed the whole point of what it means to be an artist. you have a letterboxd? i'd love to follow you on there
Well I played GTA games in my youth. I played a heck lot of video games in my life. And here I am, in cinema and interested in it. Haneke has a point of view that he defends very well, but it's still only a point of view.
I have seen very very relaxed directors and their work end up being absolutely mediocre, but the ones that are total control freaks, intense af turned out to be masterpieces.
Ja wenn er gescheite Filme machen könnte dann sollte er auch lehren.. da dies aber nicht der Fall ist sollte er es besser bleiben lassen.. das wäre dann wirklich gut für alle.. einfach nur ein weiterer Programmierer und kein echtes Talent.. nichts weiter. Er präsentiert sich gerne mit einem angeschaltenem Licht.. wahrscheinlich weil ihm dieses in Wirklichkeit fehlt. If he would be able to make proper films he should be also able to teach how to make films.. but as this is not the case he should better leave it.. that would help everyone... just a programmer and not a real talent.. nothing more.. he likes to present himself with a switched on light.. possibly because it is missing in reality.
