I expected HBO's Velma to be many thing but I didn't expect it to be an almost perfect representation of everything wrong with modern day entertainment.
Velma's writers: Lets take an IP with established characters that we don't care about. Change pretty much everything about it and add personal identity politics. What can possibly go wrong. HBO: Will the fans have a problem with what your doing? Velma's writers: Who?
Don't forget making the characters into self inserts and mouthpieces for themselves, their failed sex lives and the popular people they feel envy from their high school days.
@@ladybabe6958 Well two reasons. One if I am going to critique this stuff I need to know what I'm talking about and I do it so people can get a recap without having to go through it.
Mindy is the sole definition of the word "Privilege" itself. She grew up in a upper class, went to an ivy league college & never had to struggle in her life to get where she's today now. She made Velma herself insert but this version of Fred is actually HER.
Oh, you saw Neytirix's NOT MY VELMA too? Yeah, I agree; it is _very_ embarrassing on Mindy Kaling's part Edit: I noticed I said "say" instead of "saw". God, I hate being embarrassed by misspelling words
Even with all the things Velma has done in this miserable excuse for a show, I'd argue she has a better personality than her inspiration : Mindy Kailng.
The show: Goes on and on and on and on about how "bad" men are. The men in the show: NEVER do anything wrong. I still cannot decide if this is on purpose or the woke ass writers were too caught up in "tHe MesSagE" to write a coherent story. Could have made Freds very obviously racist, misogynistic, abusive father, the villain, but nope...He doesn't actually DO anything. Instead it's the mother, who literally has like, less than 2 minutes of screentime.
Nah, iirc Shaggy was an incel about the whole incessantly calling her and leaving foul voice messages, such as calling her a bitch and getting punished by his mom.
The “second season” was most likely made long before the “first season” was ever released. Animation is usually made in bulk especially anything with streaming and typically split the buck into multiple seasons.
5:18 "Nobody ever complained about a talking dog solving mysteries...So I don't think they'll be upset over a brown Velma." If Scooby was in the show and got changed from a Great Dane to a Chihuahua, people would be very upset about it, Mindy. Then they'd be even more pissed if he went from being cowardly, loveable, and food obsessed to cocky, spiteful, and a picky eater.
Yeah, that'd just be Scrappy Doo, and everybody hates him. But who knows? Maybe a show starring Scrappy Doo as the main character would be better than this literal dumpster fire.
@Ni Cola No no, you see, blatant discrimination on the basis of race is only actually racism, and therefore bad, when there's systemic/historical support to some extent of that bigotry. You can be as vile as you want towards people solely for their race, but if it's against the dominant group it will be overlooked and if it's between different minority groups it will still be blamed on the dominant group! At worst, you're perpetuating white supremacy, which is of course the white man's tool to divide everyone else! /s Seriously, can't fucking stand the "prejudice + power" definition because it's so obviously used by people to underwrite their own prejudices by hiding behind their race, as though they aren't using privilege to push bigotry themselves.
@@dennishendrikx3228 Yes,and I was joking because that Is the worst possible way to find out if somebody is a killer. It Is like if I was looking for a drug leader and said "It Is Mr.Hernandez because he Is a latino with a beard".
Because then the story would be about how the Mystery Gang is an old, decrepit group. The gang must now pass the torch to all my new self inserts because they’re just OH SO MUCH BETTER Basically, what Cars 3, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ant Man: Quantumania, Dr. Strange: Multiverse Madness, Strange World, Thor: Love and Thunder, Lightyear, and Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny did.
What kills me about this is the concept in theory this should have been basically IMPOSSIBLE to fuck up! Ive heard so many fans say they'd love a Velma show, and targeting it to adults could of been great if done right!
I enjoy the way you always make everything bad, in detail. You could just say it sucks, but you just keep going with more and more good reasons as to why it completely ruins society as a whole
The one thing they got right about Shaggie is that he’s the opposite of Fred. But because William Hanna and Joe Barberra weren’t as racist as Mindy, it didn’t even occur to them to make one of them black.
Velma being brown or race swapped isn't the problem, it's the writing. For example, Jeffrey Wright's James Gordon in Batman was perfect even though Gordon was race swapped. Only problem is the script, they are showing off the race swapped cast on our faces and it's very irritating.
I don't mind it when it's warranted or the actor just fits the role better then the original, but people who do it for the sake of it is just terrible. It's just trying to be "woke" and fam money off of those groups. It's even more racist to me. But like I said, when the actor is just simply talented or it makes sense, I think it's great.
A few years ago, my school had competitions that included books. These books were picked because they were enjoyable to read. Then one year we had a book that included a transgender protagonist. We thought, okay, thats kind of weird, (it wasnt a good book by any means.) The very next year, every single book included major a major woke message and characters, rather than being picked for being good books. I quit after that year. They probably doubled the book count just to add more of that. I'm glad that some other people share the same irritation at things no longer being judged by their quality.
There was a point in time where I thought that I was practically alone in thinking what's going on. Why is this so called "inclusivity and diversity" so forced? Why are people that clearly don't care about good stories, characters and worlds in charge? Why are the fans all of sudden every buzzword in the book? And then it turned out that not only am I not alone but there are many people out there who are slowly starting to get fed up with all of this.
This is why I feel like I can't support things like this. I feel like I can't watch/read/listen to things that advertise themselves with themes of being anti racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. because they all feel like they're just shouting nonsense to make a quick buck. I don't actually care that much about the messaging as long as the story can make up for it, but a lot of time it can't and it feels like I'm contributing to companies capitalizing on actual, genuine struggles, while they ignore the PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY STRUGGLING. This is why I can't sit through the Avatar (with the blue people) movies lol the whole thing is just pretty propaganda.
If your gonna make a self insert character into a show, don't put yourself in the show but put a little bit of yourself into the character but not too much of yourself to where you completely insert yourself. Or put yourself in the cartoon as a background character.
Funny enough, did the creators talk a lot about Velma not being dependent on her skin color, so why not change it? Now imagine Velma staying white and listen to all her dialogs "He is a rich white male with a tiny dong", would a white Velma say that?
14:20 I have a theory for this, seriously it's not a joke, I think the writers thought they were so smart that they would unmask the critics of the series as "A lot of homophobic people who look for any detail to complain about" with those little moments when that the 2 boys appear because to be honest, I saw the series (I regret it with every fiber of my being) and those moments in which they come out feel so taken out of context and put because if, seeing how they have treated everyone who criticized the series before its premiere, it is not uncommon to think that they wanted to play the geniuses, the thing is that their "Master Move" went wrong and that detail (which, curiously, you are the only RU-vidr who mentioned it) was completely and utterly ignored because the characters, especially Velma, emitted maximum levels of cringe, rejection, hatred and the desire to break her face that the reflector of criticism fell harder on her, even more so when even those who tried to use as guardians (I'm talking about all the woke movement supporters) to defend them, but even they thought that this series was making fun of them, this series achieved something impossible to see, it united both sides against the creators, those kissing guys tried to be bait to fish for haters and expose them, but they ended up fishing an anti woke poseidon and the chutulu of all woke together and they weren't ready for this, to be destroyed by the whole world. In the end that can be taken from all this: -The series is not even jokingly renewed for a 2nd season, they mention it but there is not a tweet, °By the way, they deleted the trailer from the official HBO Max channel -The writers fled because even Mindy deleted all posts talking about the series and I think she was going to India for a casting in Bollywood -No one defended this, and those who tried began to erase their criticism in favor of the series or were exposed to the world. Velma was a success?, yes, in becoming the common enemy that united the entire internet for a few days saying: "Mindy fuck you and your self insert and Charlie (the creator) if your abuser was a fan of Scooby Doo when he was little, Believe me, he's laughing his ass off thinking about how long you held a grudge to try to ruin what he liked, thinking "HAHAHA little Charlie was still crying in his bed without forgetting me hahaha"
It’s funny. Americans are so obsessed and focused on diversity and race politics in their entertainment that they absolutely fail at it and only create more stereotypes and cringe. Meanwhile Japan, who doesn’t care about all that stuffs, manages to actually have more cultural/racial diversity in their anime and have it be fun and entertaining. Just look at Stardust Crusaders - a Japanese, a French guy, an Egyptian, an doggo, and an American (Brit) traveling the world!
I know you ain’t serious. Anime has JUST recently come a long way with its inclusivity. And still has a ways to go for how they treat non Asian poc/darker skin tones. Which everyone knows Japan is not as diverse as America with race. But that doesn’t excuse the straight up disregard for poc, black people especially. please don’t act like they weren’t doing racist stereotypes on their poc characters and purposefully drawing them in a disrespectful way. I’m willing to bet there’s still some going on. Velma isnt bad because of diversity/race swapping. Its just the writing is awful. Anyone can see that from a clip or two. I aint defending that train wreck and I can agree they should’ve handled the race swap better, but don’t pull that crap. Acting like anime is a safe diverse non racist utopia for non Japanese poc. Youre not a black person right? because no way? Take some time to google maybe before spouting this further on the internet. It’s a bit embarrassing how ignorant and naive you’re acting towards anime. Got me pissed in a comment section on Velma bruh 🙄
"If I had a nickle for each time I've seen an overweight woman that was also part of comunity of minorities made a cringe self insert character in a beloved franchise, ruined it in the process and responded to the backlash by calling the haters: racists and homophobics, I'd have two nickles, which is not much but it's weird that it happened twice."
I heard from Grizzy the people who actually gave this show positive reviews have names like Chlamydia Burnes and Reginald Secksofender. This is Velma’s target audience everyone!
The fact that this racist and stereotypical show somehow (despite all the hate thats flying towards it) has more support than an actually good and well meaning movie like the Super Mario Bros Movie, is so baffling to me.
Ive ranted about this before but I gave them his shoe a chance, I saw 3 episodes, and it was pure agony. I later had to watch crystal skull with my dad and dear god it had the same level of "fucking kill me now please". The only good part was when Velma got hit by a car becaue that bitch honestly deserves it. Shes the kind of person who will be a total ass to everyone and then be surprised no one likes her despite the signs being clear. Also that hot girl episode was greatly discomforting because those girls are teens, minors, and that was just gross af to me. Also as someonr who deals with anxiety issues and panic attacks, you do not touch someone or get up in their face during a panic attack, it will not end well, Velmas "panic attacks" are honestly just clout attacks to me.
No collector King doing a recap of all these episodes would not be a war crime it would be a crime against humanity itself and I personally thank you for saving us from that horrible Experience
I was so excited for this show too.. I thought it would be great! Cool plot, I was meh on the designs, but it was ok! I watched the first episode. I hate my life.
I don’t think this show was ever made with the intention of making it likeable. They wanted people to hate watch it so that it would get more people to get a subscription to hbo to see how bad this show really was. And that’s why there’s a season 2 greenlit already.
It’s not even the relationships, or the races, or the sexual identities. It’s about having the characters LIKE. THEY. WERE. There was NO REASON AT ALL for them to change it. THERE WASNT EVEN SCOOBY?!?! Let’s face it, there was nothing wrong with the diversity. There, however, was EVERYTHING wrong with the writing. This was a horrific show. Hope it gets taken down, cause no one needs to see that crap.
Here’s what I think happened: The creator pitched an idea for a show to HBO, they rejected and suggested they make a show about the Scooby-Doo gang instead. Either Velma uses the same story they pitched to HBO but changed enough things to be considered a Scooby-Doo show or they completely started over and made something for the sole purpose of releasing their anger against HBO rejecting their show. I really hope the creators didn’t just wake up one day and decided THIS was a great idea. This kind of thing happens often with shows, someone pitches their idea to a production studio and gets rejected but they are pointed towards something the studio is looking for. Usually one of three things happen as a result, 1. They decline the offer and go somewhere else to pitch their show to. 2. Accept the offer as their big break in the industry and hopefully gain a good enough reputation to make the show they wanted later on. 3. Get their feelings hurt but accepting the offer anyway because eAsY mOnEy just to half-ass the show because they want the studio to look bad but they also ruin their own reputation in the process.
This is most definitely the second worst show I've ever seen in my entire life, the version of "Velma" in this show and the original couldn't be anymore different, he'll every character is just the worst thing ever, this isn't Scooby Doo, this is the 5th Circle of Hell.
thw reason why scooby isnt in the show because "partly due to the creators being unable to figure out how to do an adult take on the character and also partly because Warner Bros. Animation told him that they could not use the iconic dog"
I'm guessing that those aren't equally responsible... To be fair I'm sure they were pretty happy not to have to use Scoob themselves. This is clearly a different pitch that they pulled in a beloved IP for because they couldn't sell it on its own merits, so they instead banked on corporate love of exploiting nostalgia and existing franchises to do it.
See Collector makes so much sense, everything has absolutely nothing to do with the original show, they just kept the characters' names as a cover to pretend it still has Scooby doo vibes. They could simply done it as a brand new show with its own original characters and plot and gain it so-called audience but they knew it wasn’t going to get them anywhere so they ended up sacrificing one of the most popular old and valid kids tv series, hoping it’ll have the same impact. But jokes on them, they just tarnish the whole show’s reputation with this mad toxic ass wokeness. Also this is undoubtedly one of the most powerful pillow times I've ever witnessed, you deserve it
I never knew what was wrong with this show, as I had never watched it, nor any videos explaining what's wrong with it, literally nothing to tip me off on the bad points. Watching the first 2 minutes seconds of this video told me EVERYTHING I needed to know. I am so glad I never touched this dumpster fire.
The people giving this show 10/10 are the same type of people that screech on Twitter how AMAZING the current woke Marvel and DC comics are but don't spend a cent on them and have no clue who the characters are.
When i see these shows the problem i have is when its just badly written. I could overlook changing things with some characters so long as it is well written and the story makes sense. However, it seems that the changes they make to the characters become the whole identity of the show and they lean into steryotypes to make a bad story with two dimensional characters. People hate it because it's bad, not because they are racist.
Fred being portrayed like this pissed me off so badly, he was my favorite character in the old scooby doo because he was a badass lovable himbo, and now he’s just a cartoonish portrayal of a rich person
@fullcorpse1232 I know and it's really disgusting. Well at least Pat Stevens (One of Velma Dinkley's original voice actresses that passed away in May 2010) didn't live to see this crap.
I actually watched the majority of the show and while the art style was goodish i hated every second of this bastarization of my favorite crew of animated misfits, and the only time it actually got a laugh out of me was when velma got her face caved in by a car since the officer had enough of her bullshit
Watch out closely, this is the only positive thing about this show: It is GREAT educational material for people who want to learn how to write stories, characters and all about. Because this show is a library of EVERYTHING YOU MUST NEVER EVER INCLUDE in your creation. This is why it is great for teaching people what is wrong and to strictly avoid. It can also make you feel better, because when you watch a few seconds you can think to yourself: "Hey, I am better! I am better than this, I would never come to think about anything in this show. I am a good person🥲" It elevates you to higher level of selfesteem, because you can be fully aware, that you absolutely are on a higher niveau.
She already made the Mindy Project. I... don't believe it was very good either. Better than this, but that doesn't say much. Viral meningitis is better than Velma.
