that electric whine combined with the fantastic sound of the diesel engines doing their work is really something to be appreciated

Loveliest motor noise I’ve heard for a long while.

The GLV's are arcing as they do indeed have traction motors as they were originally the motor vehicles from the old 2 HAP EMUs. After withdrawal were then converted into the GLVs for the Gatwick express in order to provide a push/pull service with Class 73s, the traction motors proving useful to aid the 73's through the point work at Gatwick airport where the risk of a loco becoming gapped at low speeds was high. After the mk2 coach formed trains were withdrawn the GLVs were put into storage untill purchased/leased by network rail and refurbished for 3rd rail deicing duties. Hope this explains a little bit of the history of these long lived units, apologies for any errors.

I wonder why the 73's were using diesel power? icy rails?

Given TPWS/OTMR/GSM-R, would those GLV’s be able to move under their own power on the main line again?

Probably a stupid question (and not a complaint obviously!) that I'll be roundly corrected on, but how come the 73's are operating on Diesel power where there's Third Rail. A possible who knows? Just because...?

This may be a silly question, but someone may know! As the train is leaving using diesel power, why is there significant arcing from the pick-up shoes as it crosses the diamond? At 1:10 - 1:15 there are a few biggish arcs: I thought that ED's worked independent of the juice-rail when on diesel-power. Have I missed something?
@matthew0605
@matthew0605 Год назад
The 73s were on diesel power but they were hauling converted emu stock which have traction motors that are under power from the "juice"rail and that's why there's arching . Hope that helps .-bud the painter-

Very nice to see 73s proving their worth on diesel power. on the odd occasion I sampled 73s on diesel on the GatEx.they seemed pretty poor unless they were on electric. Great video and proper liveries as well. Of note though, has anyone noticed the 73 at the rear seemed to clag first?

Interesting. You can see the thrust from the third engine. Perhaps it was outputting relatively more power than the rest. No 2 engine looked a little weak.

Awesome thanks for posting. Why do they run on diesel when they could run on electric. I thought class 73's were dual purpose and could run off the 3rd rail. I much prefer diesel power though, and the clag ;-)
@reggiesmith3866
@reggiesmith3866 Год назад
Exactly.. why were they still on diesel power on the 3rd rail through the Station?
@professorjamesmoriarty5191
@professorjamesmoriarty5191 Год назад
@@reggiesmith3866 Not sure how things are now, but it used to be that you couldn't run more than 2 together on electric in case of drawing too many amps. There was a similar restriction on the 4 rep units were they could not run in multiple, one would have to drag the other.
