+Max White "Logically" speaking it's dumb but war is not logical. If a buddy is down and being swarmed by people who intend to end his life then instinctively you want to stand between him and the swarm, even if it kills you. Weird, I know, but it's just the way some people operate.
Shugart's last line always gets me. "Gordon's gone, man. I will be outside. Good Luck." He knew his death was not far away, but still bid Durant's fortune. A powerful scene.
4 years late I know. But his last few statements showed how true of a soldier and a man he was. Knew he was likely going to die but was going to give it his best to defend his brother, no matter how futile it looked. Man not only a real solider, but a real man. Respect to his his memory.
This scene perfectly illustrates the true quality of special forces soldiers. I'm not talking about combat skills. I'm talking about how quickly Shugart accepts Gordon's death (as hard as it is to swallow) and gets on with the mission. Special forces are not much physically stronger than regular soldiers. What sets them apart is their mentalities. Soldiers often draw the majority of their own strength from their comrades. Low group morale can easily crush an individuals determination. Upon being the last one alive in a combat situation, soldiers can quickly become disheartened and resign themselves to their fate or go out in gun blazing suicidal glory. It takes a insane level of mental fortitude to be the last one alive and still fight effectively and strategically without losing control, to draw strength from yourself and not the guy next to you. Shugart perfectly illustrates this. He accepts Gordon's death in a matter of seconds. He doesn't give the enemy the satisfaction of a quick all out raging death, he keeps his cool and continues to fight effectively, taking down as many hostiles as possible.
I have never been star struck in my life. I was working at a ski resort in Colorado when a man came in upset that his military pass wasnt verified. That man was mike durant. Usually you need all the paperwork to verify yourself from the military to get the $100 epic pass, but when he walked in, and I pulled up his name and profile, i knew exactly who he was. I said sir "were you mike durant a nightstalker pilot?" And he said quite impressed with a smile "how the hell do you know that?". I said "sir, i know exactly who you are. I just want to shake your hand. It is an honor to meet you. I dont need to see any paperwork. Thank you for your service" I shook his hand and he left. One of the proudest moments of my life.
It’s a testament to Gordon and Shugart that their actual last stand at the downed chopper was much longer than depicted in the movie, and that Mike Durant said they were very calm the entire time. Not even Hollywood could make a more badass scene than the real life final stand of those two men
While their stand was no doubt one of the most badass and heroic actions i have ever read about there is a very good Washington times article that heavily suggests they fought for about 20 minutes to a half hour before being overrunned. Main source being that the rescue column that was trying to reach them was called off way before the 2 hours the book says they fought for which makes no sense. If they knew a fight was still on they wouldn’t call them off
@@Laxa30 They had no way of reaching them with the mob of Somalis and the debris blocking the main routes. They had already lost enough helicopters that it was no longer a viable means of exfil. This is the reality of war.

Two bravest servicemen had their body and their fellow comrades being dragged on the road of Somali by those babaric skinnies. And they keep claiming that they're should not be considered to be animal. (I apologise if I may accidentally insult people who shares same skin colors with those babaric militians. It's depend on the environment where you were brought up that effect your behaviors and actions. I still believe that African descendant in Europe and American may act more like a well-educated and decent citizen than those who was brought up in places where wars and conflicts are happening everyday. @@Screwby_Jones6200 Bro, I went through USMC boot in 2004, Hollywood Marine, and along with Chesty, Daly, Smedley Butler, Bailone, John Glenn and Hathcock, one of the guys speaking to us talked about them and how he'd have been proud to have called them brothers. To volunteer to go in against hundreds of enemies, basically so that one American won't die alone? Is there anything in the world more honorable? Their first two requests to be inserted were denied, but they were finally granted permission after their third and final request came following the news of the ambush on the QRF troops attempting to leave the airfield. I had no idea there were Navy Special Warfare operators there at the time though. To this day I don't understand why they didn't ask for the Marines of the 13th MEU and 1/9 to help as QRF.

The average combat load was/is 210 rounds. Gordon and Schugart knew they were going into a suicide mission. They basically demanded to be put down into a no-win situation. Two heroes if there ever was any. RIP
Even though the Mini-gun was out it uses the same ammo as the M1A one of them was carrying, but I guess they didn't have time to open up the can to hand load empty magazines. Still they didn't hesitate, they went in despite knowing the risks.

However, this would still be impractical as de-linking ammo from a belt is a slow, pain in the ass process and there is no way they would be able to invest the time to do it while bullets were flying past their heads.

Exposing your position, with less return fire, and already overwhelmed is a poor mistake. Unfortunately, they really didn't have a chance.

If it's unjustifiable then they're just pawns, I respect them, but that doesn't mean I'll support them in a war that's wrong. But in Mogadishu it's clear that actions of US troops were justifiable, honourable even and in the case of Shugart and Gordon, heroic.

If anything, I feel that makes them even more commendable for doing their job whether the cause is socially popular or not. Shugart and Gordan were master's at killing and being completely calm, knowing what they were doing and going up against. Before the two joined Delta force they were U.S. Green berets. Elite of the elite and definitely two of the most elite, bravest and heroic men ever in U.S forces and without a doubt always will be legends. Respect and RIP (salutes)

Shugart and Gordon were my biggest influence and aspiration to join the Army when I got out of high school! These two elite men taught what brotherhood in the armed forces was all about! I thank them and honor them for it!

*For people who don't know about story.* Their mission was rescue pilot. Actually not their mission, but rescue team was very far from range, pilot would gets killed. But Shugart And Gordon was near with him and asked to start rescue mission, leaders denied cause there was almost 2 hundread bandits coming in that zone. But Shugart and Gordon said *no matter we die, we took all risk* and started rescue mission. They fought till what they can. Bandits killed them and took pilot for hostage. But after battle of Mogadishu, US's goverment made contact with bandits, and took pilot from them. So, *Shugart and Gordon's mission accomplished. Pilot survived.* Shugart and Gordon was first person's who took *Medal of Honor*, after Vietnam's war.
The negotiation for him was quite lopsided. They pointed to the aircraft carrier positioned in the Gulf and said if you don't release Durant they'll have the Navy unleash hell on them.

7 years late I know but those two stepped infront of an army to defend brothers they never even met. They were men amongst an army of rats. Glad to know the man they gave their lives to survived. Their mission was accomplished.
Amen to that first delta force operators to receive the congressional medal of honor the cost of their lives, but at the same time they did what they had to do. They knew what they were getting into despite being told the chances of going in would be along with help being unavailable. They still volunteer to go in anyway. Now those are true warriors. They went out like to Warriors. A lot of people literally go on talking about the mini gun inside the Blackhawk. Why didn’t they use it well clearly the thing was out of action. Who knows what the outcome would’ve been if the thing was operational but either way things happen. These guys with or without a mini gun went down like warriors with more Somali militiamen dead all around them.

I used to work with the wife of former Delta soldier Brad Halling. He isnt depicted in the movie, but he was in the helo when these two got out. He was going to go with them, but the crew chief had been shot so he stayed and manned the minigun. He provided fire support from above for them on the ground until his helo was also hit by an RPG. He lost his leg due to the blast, but the chopper was able to make it to safety before crash landing. Dunno why it wasn't included in the movie, I guess they only wanted to focus on the birds that crashed in the city. There was way more to this battle than could ever fit in the movie.
the movie also doesn't depict the hundreds of other soldiers from various units supporting the rescue mission. It also paints the locals as all militia in which they were not. A lot of those people were confused thinking it was an invasion and were simply trying to defend their homes. Hollywood once again screws up the story

Those two men were brave beyond normal understanding. They knew full damn well they where overwhelmingly outnumbered, and the actually ignored orders to stand down...because of how dangerous it was. Randy Shugart is buried in my hometown, and I once saw his citations and Medal of Honor at a display in the Historical Society's museum, that's actually when I first learned about the man. I have a rather negative opinion of the US government, but I have the utmost respect for people who display the greatest of human convictions: self-sacrifice.

Thought my son should see it. He was 7 or so at the time. Local restaurant Poppa-Z at intersection of PA 850 and PA 74 has a picture of him on the board inside.

I've seen this movie countless times and EVERY time I get to this scene, my anxiety shoots through the roof because I know what's coming and I can't do anything about it. We see Randy die so slowly, relatively speaking. The actual fight goes on for some time (both in the book and the movie), but it's edited in this clip to show only the snipers. We don't know how either of them really died, as Durant couldn't see it, but the best guess is Gordon died first because the Randy gave Gordon's carbine to Durant and Durant surmised (in his book) that it wouldn't make sense for him to give Durant Gordon's main weapon if he was still alive. Then Shughart died shortly after. Other than that, nothing. FYI - There is a pretty brutal moment of truth from Durant (again, in his book) on what actually hit him in the face. He was buttstroked in the movie .... but it was a much more brutal and barbaric of an object in the book. I don't want to say what it was, both for spoilers and to allow the reader to have the proper "first reading" experience. That may sound dark, but such things are important to me. Like not spoiling a long awaited movie that someone is really looking forward to see.
Funny you should say that. In the book which the movie is based on, there are accounts of the soldiers seeing bizarre things. Like an old man with grocery bags walking through the firefight, a donkey going unscathed, women walking a cow home. All in the same war zone in Bakara market.
Micheal Durant himself, said that Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon, WALKED up to the aircraft, they were not wearing helmets, and did a whole lot less talking than this film shows them doing. Also Shughart depleted his ammunition entirely . He did not get down to having a last magazine with any amount of ammo. Gordon got down to half of a magazine for his rifle, and the last thing Mike Durant heard him saying was "damn i'm hit." Shughart returned to Durant twice, once to give him Gordon's CAR-15, and once to ask about the weapons on board the downed aircraft. He saw Shughart walk back around the nose of the helicopter and never saw him again. Shughart ran completely out of ammunition, for every weapon he had available, then engaged in hand to hand combat with part of the mob, before they finally killed him. Also all four crew members of Super Six-Four survived the crash initially. Bill Cleveland was also pulled from the downed aircraft and placed in a safe place. Although he did not survive. The other crew members of Super Six-Four died from their injuries after a short time. Bill Cleveland, Randy Shughart, and Gary Gordon were all Drug through the streets by ropes, unclothed.

Shugart and Gordon left this world in a pile of brass and bodies. Those men knew exactly what was going on. They were hovering above the battle from the very beginning. They volunteered to go in and set up a temporary perimeter until ground support got there on foot. Shugart and Gordon faught tooth and nail to save Durant. "Let us not mourn that they are gone, instead we should celebrate that such men have lived."
For the longest time this scene was just another heroic war story to me. Touching and inspiring, but still only one story in the sea of stories. There is something…special about what actually took place in this depiction though that goes a lot deeper. The decision Shugart and Gordon made has really thrown a wrench into my understanding of morality. Especially in the modern relativistic context of morality at bottom being a utilitarian aim to reduce suffering. These mens actions show that to be ultimately insufficient. They knew it was unlikely they would survive, they knew it wouldn’t end the battle, it was unclear if there was even anyone alive at the crash site to rescue…. “You won’t survive”. Doesn’t matter, have to do it anyway. “Durant is probably already dead”. Doesn’t matter, have to do it anyway “This will not gain you or anyone else anything”. Doesn’t matter, have to do it anyway. “There is no redemption to be had here, nothing will make this ‘worth it’”. Doesn’t matter, have to do it anyway. Unwavering and steadfastly following that inner compass, that innate sense of what is “right” that is not contingent upon any contextual particularity. It isn’t given life by what it may benefit any particular person at any given moment. It quite literally transcends context. Suffice it to say I am no longer a moral relativist. There was not a single rational argument to be made for why they should have gone down to the helicopter…the brass even discouraged it. Yet they went. You won’t find a propositional argument for why it was a good idea because such a justification would have to be grounded in a statistical likelihood of some material benefit. There was none. Yet the decision presented itself to 2 humans as one that was unambiguous and objectively the right thing to do.
The real crash site of Super-64 was much more confined than what you see here. Imagine fighting it out in a small backyard, just big enough for the BlackHawk fuselage...

redomega24 I know there is always more that I can do for my brothers in arms, but anyone can make a difference. A friend of mine started a club in school to raise awareness for the soldiers overseas, of which I am a proud member. We send them money donations, food rations, personal hygiene products, and many other items they are deprived of. Thus, if you too want to support our troops, donate to the USO, wounded warrior project, or any other great organization. The donations are small, but it makes a world of difference.
This part always chokes me up. They went down there to help their brother, 2 against maybe 100, knowing they had little chance of getting out alive, but they decided if they were going to go, they'd go defending a comrade! God bless our Armed Forces!
More then 100 once a helicopter goes down everyone in the city goes to that location. The Somalis knew that downed helicopters was America’s weakness they had to be over 100 Somalis going to that crash site
They went as a volunteers, which is a real heroism. Being outnumbered hundrets to one is clearly a suicide raid, but they went to support/rescue their compatriots. What a bravery, i bow to them.

I’m shocked the Black Hawk MSgt. Gordon and SFC Shughart were riding didn’t crash from the weight of their massive cajones. They knew damn well they weren’t going to survive that situation and went in anyway. They wouldn’t be able to live with themselves knowing they left their brothers down there to die alone. Reading his and SFC Shugharts Medal Of Honor citations never fail to make my eyes well up with tears.
I watched the scene for the first time with a bunch of Army vets and it was one of the most moving experiences of my life I felt something in that room I’ve never felt before as those men knew some of these guys … God bless our troops

I cried so hard at this part, knowing that it actually happened. The fact that it’s abridged and they held out much longer than the movie lets on doesn’t take away from the impact of the scene. Both men knew that they would die protecting him. They knew rescue wasn’t possible or at best, extremely unlikely. They were told “no” twice and still asked to go down and help. Men like this is why the Medal of Honor is still held in the regard it rightfully deserves. Godspeed, Shughart and Gordon.

Shughart and Gordon took on three hundred militia with Durant backing them up. Many of the militia were high on drugs which gave them more confidence, but they were still terrified of the Delta snipers who for a good while seemed unkillable. The two operators took out well over twenty five enemies before being killed. The militia carried away many of their fallen, but twenty five corpses were still in front of the helicopter hours later. It's like something out of Greek mythology. Shughart and Gordon are like the modern Diomedes and Odysseus. Those scumbag 'militia', and their 'warlord' coward leader, who were starving and murdering people, including children, are nothing more than dregs and animals. Gordon and Shughart died for their friends, for their country, and for the innocent people of Somalia. America is 'led' by scum like Clinton and Biden, but it's upheld by men like Gordon, Shughart, and Durant.

Not only did he get cold-cocked with the severed limb of his co-pilot, it smashed his eye socket and his cheekbone. In his book, he also said that when that crowd of people descended onto him, they were pulling on his gear so hard that he thought they were going to rip him to pieces.
Honestly this is one of the most hardest and gut wrenching scene of all time. It's painful to watch as all hope gets lost and they desperately fight till they finally ran out of ammo.

+EasyLee this isn't politicizing everything. This was the Clinton administration denying the use of Spectre Gunships, and attack helicopters. Resulting in 18 dead Americans, most were at crash sites defending the crew. Outcome would have been different if the mobs were being attacked from the air.
Also don't forget an extremely crucial detail. They had an exact location on all the VIP's they were looking for. Clinton made them wait a month before allowing them to go in. By then the info was useless. They had to search a bit to find who they were looking for, making the operation last longer than needed. But denying proper air support is also FUBAR. As any soldier or marine on the ground knows, air support is a must to minimize friendly casualties.
