This is the place where the original GG! was designed and built, and where the entire fleet of GG1's was built and maintained. The history here is stunning.

I worked there, in Altoona, PA., for 44 years. Started there back in 1949 when it was the PRR(Pennsylvania Railroad).

When you grow up in Altoona, you always hear people say that this is the dream job for men to have in this town. I always see so many guys try so hard to get in this place for work.

I’ve never seen a turntable at work and was to have gone up to Altoona tomorrow but unfortunately the trip was postponed. Thanks for sharing your great view :-))

Grew up just blocks from this place. Brings back a lot of memories as a kid, and my Dad taking me down to watch the engines on the turntable and having Sheetz hotdogs.

Hey Rich, That video was shot from a public road, I couldn't believe how close I could get. The fence is made of bars about 4" apart so you can shoot right through them. Glad you liked the vid! Craig

The engineer of that switcher must be pretty skilled to get both the switcher and the road engine on the turntable with the couplers hanging off!

Juniata Shops is the most important structure on the NS every day thousands of trains tackle Horseshoe Curve and if a train breaks down this is the only place to get it fixed.

Any experts on here care to explain what constitutes a class 1 railroad and it's guidelines for pulling/pushing?

Wow, American switchers/shunters are huge compared to British shunters! They're the same size as the mainline locomotives!
