Every 3-4 years, the Niles Canyon Railway hosts the annual Steamfest, which took place again in 2014 after Steamfest II in 2010. In this year 2014, Niles Canyon Railway hosted Steamfest III from June 7th-15th. In this event, the participating steam locomotives were Quincy Railroad Co. #2 (ALCO 2-6-2T), Robert Dollar Co. #3 (ALCO 2-6-2T), and logging mallet Clover Valley Lumber Co. #4 (Baldwin 2-6-6-2T). The visiting steam locomotives were Mason County Logging Co. #7 (Baldwin 2-6-2T) and Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 "The Chiggen". During the Steamfest III festivities, it ran three weekday railfan/photographer events: The Loggers Special, Mixed Freights Special, and the Quintuple Header. On this day of the Mixed Freights Special, the participating steam locomotives were Quincy Railroad Co. #2, Mason County Logging Co. #7, and Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2. This footage covers runbys of the three locomotives that participated in the day's event. Locations include Niles, Alston which is a siding just east of the Dresser bridge, "The spot", and dead cow curve. You will notice that on Quincy Railroad Co. #2's arrival at the Sunol depot, she encounters some wheelslip issues possibly due to the slipperiness of the tracks. During the runbys at Alston, Mason County Logging Co. #7 is put on the point of the work train instead of the work train to let "The Chiggen" pull the work train alone due to a busted headlight on Quincy Railroad Co. #2. This day was a blast to reward myself for accomplishing the first year of my high school career after months of hard work and to start off my summer break!
