Growing up in the 80s, I thought the Police were just a pop band and did not care for their music that was on the radio (mostly from Synchronicity). I just discovered this album 2 weeks ago and I can't stop listening to it. They were definitely ahead of their time and their sound is heard in so many bands. The Police are one of the great pioneers of rock 'n' roll. This live performance is phenomenal.
same here, and judging by your screen name I'm betting for the same reasons as me....I was all AC/DC back then. I remember seeing the Police and Stevie Ray Vaughan on MTV in those days and I hated them. Now SRV is a religious experience in a way for me.
+JustToBe Blunt Have to disagree with this one, if you watch the version from 2008 they've taken it down several keys due to Sting not being able to sing as high as the original
+Casey Tappy I think he got a little better after this, with some voice lessons. He had a great voice in the late 80s, early 90s. Then it started to fade. I always thought most of his very early stuff was a bit off key -- except this night. Other life peformances, he's too sharp.
his middle high notes definitely got better over the year's.....when he first made "every little thing she doe is magic" it was bit much for him sometimes.....but now he sings is like its nothing......his technique has gotten better for endurance. his voice is darker and more rounded now. sure, its fair to say he might have lost some agility on the crazy high notes with his new technique. but he'll still throw in some crazy notes.....he often throw's in High C#'s on live renditions of message in a bottle. stings new technique has given him much more secure big notes which is why I think he changed it up a little.
TheZooropaBaby haha I use to say that nobody can be as crazy and weird as Tom Morello with a guitar on his hands...but, man, every time I watch The Police live I think that maybe I'm wrong! haha Andy it's really weird, but absolutely awesome!
Alberto Argentiero Reeves Gabrels is another who gets some very weird sounds out of his guitar, especially as he often uses little or no effects. All down to his unique tech!
2:22 until the end. Incredible, beautiful and just insane! My favourite live performance of So Lonely from them! Hammersmith 1982 is also really good too! And the Beat Club appearance is 78 or 79?? Three top 😂🤣😊 I was born in 1995 so just over obsessed wish I had the chance to see the early days Police 😭😭😭
I was born in 1996 and feel the same way as you. When i first started listening to them i did not expect their music would shape me so much. I also play music and everything changed after jumping on this wonderful bandwagon. Cheers!
Andy Summers - enough said. Outstanding musician. I was around when The Police arrived ... But I didn't see the quality until "The Beds to Big Without You". These 3 are magnificent individually and collectively.
its incredible when a band is even better live, the high notes for instance, and the guitar solo are next level 3000. and the breakdown, nothing like that on the lp
I didn't really get The Police for a long time. I thought they were just a band my parents liked, and when I was a teenager, Sting seemed like a total nutjob to me. But this song is one of my all time favourite songs, I think it transcends so many genres, and I'd say it was singularly responsible for opening me up to new genres. I still get chills when I hear it, and I'd never seen this live version before. I got a whole new kinda chill again. I absolutely love it.
¿Would those students in that Polytechnic be aware they were in presence of one of the best bands ever? Damn, I envy them. Stewart Copeland is the one who wakes up everyone with his drumms, if you remove him is just soft, jazzy Sting music. Copeland is The Police sound.
I would also say with 100 percent confidence that Andy Summers is one of the most if not the most underrated and under appreciated guitarists in the history of music, especially in his mastery of creative genre bending, sting is no slouch, especially at this point in their career, his bass lines are pretty simple but especially in this live version his vox are incredible.
My favourite Police song. I’ve trawled RU-vid - this is is. The rawest version by the Police. I love Bruno Mars, he’s one of the greatest male artists on the planet - he makes these vocals seem effortless. But this is the guys who wrote the song smashing it for their crowd at a Polytechnic.
+The Stuport LOL I'm A little late in my response but I'm glad I'm not the only one whose noticed them !! yes Copeland was notably eccentric in addition to being possibly one of the best drummers of that era!! we desperately need music like this !!
Well, someone told me yesterday That when you throw your love away You act as if you just don't care You look as if you're going somewhere But I just can't convince myself I couldn't live with no one else And I can only play that part And sit and nurse my broken heart So lonely So lonely So lonely No, no one's knocked upon my door For a thousand years or more All made up and nowhere to go Welcome to this one man show Just take a seat they're always free No surprise, no mystery In this theatre that I call my soul I always play the starring role So lonely I feel so lonely So lonely So lonely I feel so lonely So lonely
Such a good band. Who wants to see the Police record a new album ? One of the very few bands that ended things at the height of their fame when there last album was great and they were still on top. I think it is time for the Police to record a new album. it's been a long enough break from them hating on each other. who wants to see them record a new album ?
@@JamesCarmichaelNot really, making music with others involved a lot friction if you have all creatives individuals in just one band. Their egos and way to see things are gonna clash somehow. Making music isn't like going to a factory where you just do your part to make a product and then you get paid at end of the week/month.
You are correct Mr. President. I wonder if Dr. Strangelove couldn't alter their personalities to be more affectionate with some efficacious pharmaceuticals developed during The War?
When I first heard of them Sting was 28 and me and my friends were like " What is ancient 28 year old doing with the best band in the world! LOL Kids can be very clueless!
Thanks for posting. I’m pretty certain this is from the BBC’s ‘Rock goes to College’ show. Which was just brilliant. I am also pretty certain that there have been a few folk who have “borrowed“ a few of the old, big old, VT tapes and have transferred them. Not suggesting you are that person, but if you are, thank you. And the BBC at the moment doesn’t seem too bothered to do a copyright strike. Which is lucky for us boomers who can look back at some incredible moments in music history.
They have not made bands LIKE THESE since the 1990s! Signing off, a guy who just turned 49 years old who got into The Police by hearing 'Spirits In The Material World" in 1982 (I was 8 years old then with a September birthday)
Love this raw Police sound!!!! Brilliant 👍👌 I have a cd somewhere of the police same year and tour but Sting had laryngitis and sounded a little rough!😂
I was a 11 yr old watching this from outside standing on a beer crate peaking through a crack in the curtain! And fast forward 33 yrs i get to play at Stings house for a Xmas party with The Good The Bad and The Ginger! Funny how life pans out!
Now no one's knocked upon my door For a thousand years or more All made up and nowhere to go Welcome to this one man show Just take a seat they're always free No surprise, no mystery In this theater that I call my soul I always play the starring role
