No discredit to Sting. He was more than talented enough to have a great career by himself as we've seen. So talented. Voice, while playing intricate baselines, and incredible songwriting. But his ego couldn't handle that Copeland was better at his instrument than he was at anything he did. Summers was probably his equal. The most underrated gitarist of all time. It's a disgrace actually. Summers knowledge of music surpasses most if not all. Such a shame. The Police. These three were pure magic together.

Well, he’s certainly outstandingly creative. Very special and unique technique. From rock, funk grooves, to reggae . His problem is that he struggles with timing. Speeds up unexpectedly, and music pays the price. That sucks. It all ruins his other qualities. Also, he drops the beats inexplicably. Maybe he just should be less busy and focus more…. Gets carried away easily. He’s a great composer, btw. .

He is but I think that's because he's at heart an improvising player. He's got his chops and a great sense of rhythm who hits a ton but wants to find creative ways to throw stuff into the music. First things first: I absolutely adore Stewart Copeland's drumming. Have done so through all the decades that I've known The Police. But whenever I look at the comments section of basically every single Police video here on RU-vid I get the feeling that the majority of people are almost compulsively heaping praise on the man. And rightly so, that fella deserves the praise, don't get me wrong.. But so many people are very often ignoring Sting's and Summers' contribution to the band. I mean, think of Sting whatever you want but he wrote almost all of the songs they ever recorded (and I absolutely love Stewart's songs, especially on Reggatta), his bass lines are essential to the songs and his voice is, well, the voice of The Police. Without the amazing soundscapes Andy Summers created with his guitar, The Police wouldn't have been The Police. Not as we know and love them. Between the three of them they made this band, egos clashing and all. True, Copeland formed the band and had the good sense to get that bass playing and singing fella from Newcastle involved in it. So there's that. But once again: it was the three of them that created the inimitable energy and creative force that was The Police. Take one single guy out of the equation and you're left with nothing. At least not with The Police. Appreciate the contribution of each of them. Only together they were The Police. Only together they were one.

@renderizer01
@renderizer01 Год назад
@@guimat Absolutely - in terms of dexterity and technical proficiency. No doubt at all. If it comes to sheer musicality - what they were bringing to the table in terms of ideas, structure, originality - they were definitely equals. They were playing off each other. Many of Sting's songs would never have become what they are without the ideas that the other two guys would provide. But yeah, Copeland could probably drum circles around them. So to speak...

The rumor all day was whether they were going to reunite because Sting kept saying "No, no, no". And then Branford Marsailes (sp.) had come out to play with someone earlier in the afternoon (I forget who) and he was still with Stings band, so I figured "Oh, well. that ain't gunna happen". I felt bad for Joni Mitchell because they placed her between U2 and this so she was actually being booed, Pete Townshend (whom I had gone to this show at all to see) didn't play because he father had literally died either that day or the day before and it ruined by buzz!!!! An interesting day with the low-light being Yoko Ono singing a couple of songs and trying to lecture us about........well, I was under the influence and couldn't understand a word she said.

This was a brief reunion for the Amnesty International concert, after The Police had broken up in 1984. There was hope of a sixth studio album, but Stewart Copeland broke his collarbone, so it was shelved. Instead the band would not do anything of significance for another 20 years until announcing their 2007-2008 Reunion World Tour. I thankfully got to see them play in sold out show in Atlantic City on November 4th, 2007. Having grown up listening to their music but never seeing them live. This was an awesome experience.

This performance was one of about 20 from various bands on 6/15/86 to honor Amnesty International’s 25th Anniversary. I’m surprised and disappointed that this isn’t mentioned in the description. It was an all day concert broadcast internationally.

Can’t remember for sure how long it had been but seems like this was maybe a year or two after The Police had officially disbanded. It was a HUGE deal when they came back together for 3 or 4 of these Amnesty concerts. I couldn’t believe it. I was thrilled to see them a few nights prior(I think) to this in Atlanta. It was the first of their mini reunion performances and a massively great surprise to me. I was a fan but had never had the chance to see them when they were still together. I’m pretty sure I found out via the radio on the way to the concert that The Police would be there. What a great memory.

Stewart definitely was making his mark, explosive and absolutely enjoying himself. He always hoped for a reunion. I'm a drummer myself and Stewart Copeland was and is my main inspiration. I saw them play in Amsterdam, back in 1978, in Paradiso. Since then, I was hooked... Okay, Bono suddenly enters the stage, because 'Invisible Sun' deals with Ireland... People who are a bit up to date with the ins- and outs, know that Andy isn't such a fan of Bono and his mates. The expression on his face when the singing penguin enters the stage, tells it all.. Story goes, that after they finished their gig, they handed their instruments symbolically, over to U2, because then they were the greatest band. But just before Andy turned his guitar over to the U2 guitarist, he de-tuned his guitar in a proper way.... Always fun...

Thats cool... I didn't know that. I remember listening to this on FM radio live. I recorded it on 90 minute cassette. IIRC Howard Jones had a cool gig too this night.

Yeah, I heard that - about detuning their guitars before U2 got to use them. It was in music magazine article about the Police - and apparently both Sting and Andy weren't too fond of U2.

But if it's so, why did Andy ask The Edge to write the preface to his autobiography "One Train Later"? As an apology to him? Besides, in his preface The Edge describes this gesture of handing the guitar as a metaphor for handing the torch of the greatest rock band in the world from The Police to the U2.

Ahhh Stewart... the first who locked my eyes when I first saw the 78’s outlando sleeve while listening this new group, wondering who played that incredible drums part, making forgetting I was a guitarist... so I said to my friend who put this vinyl : they will be a gigantic brand new love, sorry , music affair cos their drummers.... Stu is one of the kind ❤️🤘🏿
