On Tuesday 27th April a small group of Aviation enthusiasts and photographers eagerly awaited the arrival of Nimrod MR2 XV226. At 11:15am the Aircraft appeared from behind the trees in what was near perfect weather conditions. After carrying out a graceful run-and-break, 226 carried out a roller along Bruntingthorpe's runway, before touching down for the very last time. Having transited down from Scotland and saying a final farewell to Cottesmore on the way down, the Kinloss ground crew saw the Aircraft in on one of Bruntingthorpe's dispersals. As her engines were shut down her new owner David Walton waited to greet the crew and receive the 700. XV226 will be kept in ground running condition and should be joining the Victor, Comet and Lightnings for fast taxi runs very soon.

The Hawker Siddley Nimrod MR.2, Nimrod MR.1, Nimrod R.1, and Nimrod AEW.3 Aircraft of the Royal Air Force where definitely some of my most favorite Aircraft ever operated in the United Kingdom! I sure hate that the RAF retired them!! 🇺🇸🇬🇧

My dad flew this plane at RAF Kinloss in the late 70s/Early 80s. While in Air Cadets I was lucky to have a day off school to spend a full day in the Nimrod doing low level operations over the north sea dropping sonar buoys followed by bumps and circuits at Kinloss. Probably the most sick I have ever been without a hangover....

Why does your name ring a bell? I was at RAF Kinloss from Nov 1980-June 84 and my Dad worked in role equipment I think? I got to up in a Nimrod as a cadet, amazing trip!

The MR2 fleet were responsible during the “Desert Shield” phase of “Desert Storm” for enforcing nearly 95% of the Arms Embargo, policing shipping passing through the Persian Gulf, Straits of Hormuz & Gulf of Oman. During Desert Storm these aircraft operated in a high air risk environment for such a relatively large patrol aircraft operating at low to medium level. The MR2 was extremely successful in “Assisted Kills” whereby Iraqi naval ships were detected, identified, reported on & subsequently on the receiving end of Coalition aircraft being vectored to attack the Iraqi naval vessels. One crew, from 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron achieved the highest “Assisted Kills” - 8 in total. This crew flew “Battlestar 42” as shown in the book “Thunder & Lightning” and were very lucky to escape an Iraqi Mig pursuit NB On a subsequent night, same area a US SF C130 was shot down. This RAF St Mawgan crew were awarded in around March 1991 the Arthur Barratt Memorial Trophy for their “Aviation Professionalism in Peace & War”. A truly effective ISTAR aircraft with well trained crews.

The best aircraft I worked on. Kinloss was the best station.

What a great design the Comet was. Strong and airworthy. But for the pressure problems it would have probably sold well. It served for about 50 years in the RAF. In the end the problems which ended it was not the aircraft itself but the difficulity and expense of developing the mission equipment necessary to keep it's warfighting ability up to date.

Strong and airworthy it was not and thats as an airliner and the first few versions of the Nimrod.

@@yamahabradley I have flown in the Comet 4C many times. My father was Chief pilot and Senior Vice President Operations of Middle East Airlines in the late 50s and early 60s. He was responsible for introducing the Comet 4C into service with MEA.The Comet operations with MEA were very successful. Over the approximate 2,000 nautical miles from Beirut to London the Boeing 707 was about 10 minutes faster, but the Comet was faster to 30,000 feet by a big margin. I have never been in a passenger airliner since that matched the Comet's rate of climb. The Comet had the power to go faster but the semi-swept wing prevented it. The Comet was key to the later development of safe passenger airliners. They learned that the fuselage had to be structurally strengthened to cope with the stresses of high speed, high altitude jet travel. On the Comet they solved the problem of reverse thrust in a jet engine......before that parachutes needed to be deployed. They also solved the problem of Dutch Roll with the development of yaw dampers. Without the valuable lessons learned from the Comet, the Boeing 707 would not have been the aircraft it was and would have suffered catastrophic structural failure like the Comet did. The 707 had greater range and payload than the Comet and was ultimately more successful but the aviation industry owes a great debt of gratitude to De Havilland Aircraft Corporation and the Comet. As far as the sheer beauty of design goes......the 707 didn't hold a candle to the Comet, one of the prettiest jet airliners to ever take to the skies......and the first!!!

BAE is the one killing the aircraft manufacturing in the UK. buying of many aircraft manufacturer in the UK then what happened?

Bae did not take over the aircraft manufacturers, the labour government nationalised them and called them British Aerospace

It was too small and had inboard motors , the design faults appeared obvious when the 707 came out and naturally it became the standard aircraft design of the modern era , the Brits for some reason never have basic common sense when it comes to design , look at the Volkswagen bug compared to the Morris minor , I had both the Morris was rattily , rusty , fragile , junk , unreliable compared to indestructible ,free , solid suspension , air cooled , reliable VW, consequently British design went nowhere in the modern era and has been replaced by people than can design things properly .

I understand the concerns as the original was based on the original passenger jet, the Comet. However we are in the 21st Century, new metals, preservative coatings & smaller technology and it would have worked. Remember the few aircraft that were replaced by the Orion are smaller and slower. No brainier to me.

Like to see a 707 land in the sea intact and get the crew out safely as the Nimrod has.

What the hell is going on at Bruntingthorpe these days, it appears to be a giant car park.
