In this special episode of Piggypower, we answer the biggest question in the 306 world, what is better, the HDi or the Dturbo?
Watch, cringe, laugh and argue at the screen, comment below too if you wish... keep it clean!
Please dont take this video, or me, seriously.... It's just for fun, I get asked it so much, people argue over it way too much...and just to add, DTturbo, its a trim, not an engine ;)

Thank you for watching...please share and like, comment too, I will read all and try to reply to as many as possible!

Brings back memories. Had two D-Turbos in my time. Loved those cars. My original one pushed a Porsche Boxster on the silk road. Just such a good chassis setup and at the time I expect more driver confidence. My lotto car purchases are. Peugeot 306 D-Turbo Peugeot 306 GTI-6 Land Rover Defender TD5 110

I've owned both. I found the power delivery much smoother on the HDI, no lag like my phase 1 D turbo. But then my HDI cost me a bomb in maintenance just before the engine blew up at around 80k. I may have just been unlucky, but on personal experience I would never own another HDI. But I would own another XUD in a heartbeat - simple, dependable all rounder.
@PiggyPower

Agreed on the power delivery. . . But I've had the opposite experience with reliable motoring... Done 130k+ trouble free miles on different HDi motors. I'd take a 2.0 HDi over an overheating xud anyday 😜

Personally hdi for everyday use and xud for a but of fun. The dw10 is the same engine block,crankshaft and turbo as the xud9te. The pistons and cylinder head are different to account for the direct injection. Xud9 feels more punchy but once you turn the fuel and boost up i they generally dont like it from experience
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 21 день назад
What do you own then out of curiosity? I think you'll find the dw10 crank is different... As is the block. The turbos are slightly newer too (different design). Stg1 tune on the xud9 is bulletproof still so long as done right... But can't always trust people to do it right 😂 they make big power easily but head lift, heat and spinning precups are weak areas for sure. I do agree though, the xud always feels more dramatic than the smooth dw10

@@PiggyPower I've had my '97 phase 2 306 TDLX from new, with just over 81,000 miles on it now. Have a straight through stainless pipe with a K&N filter and turned the main fuelling screw by 90 degrees, as well as having the wastegate set, so the turbo spools up at around1,500 RPM, rather than at over 2,000 originally. I've never had it on a dyno but it'll do over 120 MPH. Amazingly, when bog standard, I got around 47 MPG but now get over 50, unless totally ragging it. Bought a Bosch fuel pump and bits ages ago, to replace the Lucas setup, for when the world runs out of diesel and I have to switch to some veg oil or other ! Haven't gone for an FMIC or whopping injectors, as I didn't want to risk a conrod failure, as per your description. Anyway, the loss of economy would make running a diesel car pretty pointless.

Hope someone sees this as the video is old. I'm putting 1 of these in an old ducato motor home. How hard is the hdi to get running "ecu/harness" compared to the xud handfull of wires?
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 9 месяцев назад
ECU needs power and earth. ECU needs to be unlocked. Ideally you'd want to get a OBD plug somewhere useful obviously and an output for the engine management light. But if you've got the ECU and harness, it just needs plugging into all the engine sensors and then power and ground👍👍🐷
@IOUaUsername
@IOUaUsername 4 года назад
My 405 SRDT wouldn't start this morning. It's autumn in a warmish part of Australia, so surely it should start. My glow plugs seem to get 12v and have good low resistance (~1.2ohms), but I crank until the battery goes flat after about 2 minutes. Other times it starts fine.
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 4 года назад
Yup.... Yet, an HDi will start just fine, every time !! If you do multiple ignition procedures, does it start better?
@IOUaUsername
@IOUaUsername 4 года назад
No, that's even with glowing like 5 times in weather that a Brit would call "too hot". I'm thinking maybe the glow plug wiring or relay is sometimes not connecting properly. I used to live somewhere even hotter and nobody even bothered plugging in their glow plugs.
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 4 года назад
Yeah, once warm they don't really need it to start. Is battery and starter healthy to crank fast enough? Fuel filter/pickup in the tank not blocked? Or return lines are perished and sucking air into the fuel lines

Honestly, you can't compare thoose two... Like you said, it's only what you prefer, i would absolutely love to own something like that 205 xud from your video couple weeks earlier, becaouse its "big block" swap and period correct, fun and fast car for what it is. But in my oppinion HDi is much newer and better and will always be, it's like you compare carbs to multi point injection, there isn't any way carbs can be better, but in some older car, for example old Fiat 127, i would be happier swap with old FIRE 1.4 engine with 4 carbs than 1.4/1.6 16v fully electronic ignition and injection engine.... For chasing horsepower and speed definitly I would go for newer engine and techology, but for putting smile on your face, sure oldschool can do exactly the same, you just must put your expectations levels right 😊

The XUD is more old school with a pretty noticeable and enjoyable turbo effect when you reach the 2500 revs, drove a 306 HDI once, it's more linear with a better torque range, not so sure about accelerations, seem better on the D turbo, i also heard that the catalyzed versions of the XUD TE (code name DHY) had reliability problems, with some broken engines even at low mileage.
@Chriswales
@Chriswales 4 года назад
I had a XUDT, lovely car but very old school turbo wise. Big lag low down and a massive drop in power when the waste gate opened. Did feel nice when the turbo started producing usable boost tho - normally with a load of smoke. It was a Cat model and put a rod through the block at 4 years old. Had a recon engine and ran it for another 4 years. Replaced it with a MK1 Seat Leon TDI which was a significant step up, more powerful & used less fuel. Still have the Leon 14 years later and it hasn't thrown a single rod lol
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 4 года назад
The HDi creates more torque, so out of the box, usually a little quicker... Interestingly the late xud and the HDi share the same gt15 turbocharger. It's more about fuel/torque delivery and control that means there is that lag waiting for power 👍

Manufacturers don't push all engines to their max any more, they used to tune them to the peak and then move up a size. These days its commercially more logical to make one or two sizes and just vary the power output by electronic means and a few supporting add ons. That way you keep the bulk of the engine and car the same. This is also how you can map a 90 to 125 without any mods, though the emissions will change for sure.
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 4 года назад
Indeed. Also better to build an engine that will handle 200bhp, then tune it for 100bhp... Makes it super reliable!

Does that have the same Aisin Transmissionas the ones in the C5 2.7 and 3.0 HDI? If so, that one would be a big Problem, the stock 2.7 made 440nm i believe, and the 3.0 made 310hp and somewhere around 700nm in Jaguars, but in the C5 they only had 450nm and 240hp, because the Transmission in those were only rated for 450nm.

@IOUaUsername

They had the cranks outsourced to several companies. One company made terrible cranks and they like to snap. Some engines are fine to tune but others will snap even in stock form. It's a crap-shoot. You'll find Range Rovers, Ford Territories (here in Australia) and Peugeots with snapped cranks for sale on Facebook Marketplace all the time. If you're serious about these awesome engines I'd say get an aftermarket crank from the US in about 2 years - they've started putting them in the F-150 so aftermarket parts are about to be much easier to come by. I checked one out in the wrecking yard the other day and there's no way in hell you'd get one into any PSA car below the size of the 407 and C5 they came in. My 405 would never have enough engine bay. The RWD layout one from a Ford Territory into a 505 though looks like it would fit...

Buy a Lexia (dealership scantool for PSA) off eBay for 40 of your rainyland quids. I've got one that I used to enable an aux input and to troubleshoot my Citroen C5 here in Australia where any mechanic that knows how to fix a French car charges $200/hr. With a Lexia you can do not only everything a dealer can, but everything the Peugeot factory can. So you can actually get a BCM and set it up to whatever ECU, stereo, ABS computer etc you want as long as they're all options on the model of car the BCM is set up as. If you get any of those ghost issues you can read them off the computer even after they disappear. The only tricky part is you'll need a computer running Windows XP (or do what I did and set up an XP virtual machine). Most diesels don't run a lambda sensor cause they'd get too dirty to function very fast. Unless you have a particulate filter AND a catalytic converter.
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 4 года назад
Don't need stuff coded to run the 2.0 HDi with edc15, grab an engine loom an unlocked ecu from a 306 HDi and just give it power, soon as sees cranking, it will start and run fine. I think you chose to use the most complicated Citroen of the era as a donor car unfortunately! Lambda? You are thinking too much like a petrol head! Only very very very new diesel stuff runs sensors in the exhaust, more to do with emissions control. And pressure sensors for clogged cats and dpfs. The ECU doesnt need to know what is coming from the exhaust to adjust fueling, unlike a petrol fuel injected system.

They need constant servicing and parts replacing at great cost and not much age! I find people who bodge them, lower them way too much or fit second hand already worn out beams often then hate them 😜
