Great video. You will always be able to get HDCP2.3 down converters so that you can still use your older, HDCP2.2, devices when the signal is encoded with HDCP2.3. Right now you can get HDCP 2.2 to HDCP 1.4 down converters. So, when HDCP2.3 comes out, there will definitely be HDCP2.3 to HDCP 2.2 down converters.

This was good info. Kinda wish I'd found it sooner! Holiday season 2021 I upgraded my aging display to a 4K 120Hz 75" panel but didn't research enough to realize I was getting one with only HDMI 2.0b ports. I'd just figured if it does 4k120 then it must have the ports to support it... 😒 Then a few months ago I got a fancy new AV receiver on sale that *does* support HDMI 2.1... but turns out it's only for *one* of the inputs. 👀 I saw HDMI 2.1 support and thought, "Aha! Not gonna mess up *this* purchase! I got the new standard this time!" only to realize afterwards that it didn't mean *all* the HDMI in's were 2.1. 😬 Now just a few days ago I finally managed to snag a PS5 at MSRP and, well, I guess I wont be taking *full* advantage of it's capabilities, but whatever. I'm more-or-less up to modern standards after having previously been on a TV and receiver that were nearly a decade old. At least now I know better when I upgrade everything again another decade from now not to make these same oversights. 😅 Who knows, maybe someone will read this comment and avoid making the same mistakes I did.

Nice job! Thanks for explaining this well.... I'm having an issue with arc.... used to use an hdcp 2.2 receiver with my tv and switched to an hdcp 2.3 compliant receiver... now arc messes up when i use my ATV.... could it be a handshake issue due to hdcp or are they completely unrelated? I think the ATV 4k is also only hdcp 2.2 compliant... my tv is from 2017......
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 года назад
Thanks for the compliments! But regarding your issue, that's really bizarre. Sometimes you just might run into unforeseen issues when upgrading one component to something newer, even though on paper nothing should be of an issue. You should only have issues with _content_ that is encoded with HDCP 2.3. Although when was the last time you upgraded your HDMI cables? Now that you have a newer, more modern receiver that can push more data through, maybe the cables need to be able to handle 18 Gbps or even 48 Gbps just to be absolutely future proof? I know I've had issues in the past with shitty cables that _claimed_ they could handle up to 48 Gbps, but in reality, couldn't. Sucks, but just something you might need to troubleshoot with home theater.

Great overview! A quick question please. Is HDR 10bit 4:4:4 supported in HDMI 2.1? I think I read somewhere only 4.2.2. is supported for HDR, but that does not make a sense to me.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Год назад
As far as I’ve read online, HDMI 2.1 is more than capable of handling 4K HDR 60fps 10-Bit video with 4:4:4 sub sampling, since even that only has a bandwidth of 22.28 Gbps, and HDMI 2.1 can handle data transfer rates up to 48 Gbps. 🤷‍♂️

I've already had issues with HDCP 2.3 when I attempted to watch The Last of Us on HBO Max through an AppleTV 4K Gen 2 using a regular HDMI cable. Only when I hooked up a high speed HDMI 2.1 cable did it work, so it's starting to happen in rare instances these days. I'd say by 2024 or 2025, you'll more than likely run into more problems if you're still using HDCP 2.2 devices.

Yes, as long as the AVR supports eARC, that should be fine, depending on the chip set the manufacturer put in it. eARC isn’t strictly an HDMI 2.1 exclusive protocol, it’s just that ALL HDMI 2.1 chip sets DO support eARC, but only SOME HDMI 2.0b chip sets support eARC. 👍

Hey, I have a important question, I just got the Denon x2700 an upgrade from the 2400h, and everything is was working fine, I had to do the firmware update and now when ever I get a DV picture from my Sony X800 MK2 or my Panny UB820 through the receiver, it gives me vertical barcode kind of lines down half of my E8, I have it set to ‘4K Enhanced’ and the only way to stop it is to set 24p to off on the devices, it did go when I changed inputs on the 2700 but that’s inexcusable? So I phoned the company I got it from, they sent out a new one and the same thing happened, I have changed and checked HDMI leads, I use Audio Quest, I have changed inputs on the TV, It only happens if I want to go into the settings on the 2700, and come back out, it makes no sense to me, I have tried it all, I have gone directly into the tv instead of the 2700, from the players and that seems ok, but because I can’t replicate the Denon’s ‘settings’ screen I can’t tell if it’s the TV’s panel or ports..online streaming DV from a Apple TV is, as is Xbox but that’s because they are streaming I presume and there are no DV games. I have a team coming to repair it but what do I say the fault is, I’m pretty well home cinema educated but this has got me so confused as I don’t know if it’s the TV or receiver ? It happened on 2 receivers so it can’t be them can it ? Any advice sorry about the essay, is is a HDCP issue P.s it doesn’t do it with just HDR only Dolby Vision
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 года назад
Sounds like you’ve done extensive troubleshooting yourself, so there’s not much more I can suggest, given that you’ve already done what I would’ve done. The only thing I do know is that the new 8K Denon receivers have been reporting problems with their HDMI 2.1 chipsets. But I’m sure that team that’s headed there will be able to take any necessary steps to try and get to the root of the problem.

If you’re NOT a hardcore gamer, HDMI 2.0 will do fine. If you DO want to play PS5 games at the highest level (4K @ 120Hz), your new TV needs to have at least 1 HDMI 2.1 port. If you don’t care about 8K and are fine watching 4K Blu-rays and streaming shows, HDCP 2.2 will do fine. 👍

I don’t know what to tell you, other than that what I found shows that it wasn’t until their 2020 XBR line of TVs that Sony started supporting HDMI 2.1 (which is the feature that will give you 4K 120 Hz). Yes, it is HDCP 2.3, which is good for eventual 8K content that will come out years from now, but I don’t see anything about a 100 Hz refresh rate. It looks like the X7000G is the last model of Sony 65” TVs that didn’t support HDMI 2.1. @ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 года назад
No. Think of HDCP 2.3 as always being connected to 8K TVs. So there may be issues in the future (I’m talking many years in the future) where there might be something streamed in 8K. Your receiver will be able to output it, but your TV might not accept it. But streaming in 8K is still too costly, so Netflix/Disney+ aren’t going to do that anytime soon. So you might not have any issues at all anyway, since it might recognize you have a 4K TV, then send a compatible 4K signal. Make sense?

My question is if it's possible to update the HDCP protocol via firmware update (assuming your device has update capability.) If you can update something over firmware then it is not tied to hardware. For example you can't update HDMI 2.0 to 2.1 via a firmware update. You need new hardware. However a feature like eArc can be applied to an existing HDMI 2.0 port via firmware. Do you see what I'm saying?

@@ealanosborne Hey, thanks for the reply. While I have your attention, let me ask you this. I have a PS5, a Yamaha RX-V385 receiver, and an LG CX TV (arriving next week). This receiver can do 4K/60 passthrough, but the TV can display 4K/120. It seems I have two choices: pass the PS5 signal through the receiver and then output to the TV, or connect the PS5 directly to the TV and use the ARC for surround sound. Given we've established that practically no content exists at 4K/120, is there any advantage to the latter method? Is there any disadvantage of passing through the receiver?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 года назад
@@ArcadianGenesis I'd plug the PS5 into the TV and use ARC. Just as a matter of convenience, since all my components are hidden away in a media closet, I pass everything through my Onkyo receiver. On paper, it says it supports Dolby Vision, but when I did some tests with some WiSA speakers a few weeks back, I plugged my XBOX One S into the TV directly...and films just looked better. I think the processor in my LG C9 can just handle visuals better than my Onkyo, so I'd let your CX do the heavy lifting for picture quality, cuz those OLED chips are insanely good.

@ArcadianGenesis 3 года назад
@@ealanosborne Okay. So even if I run an HDMI 2.1 cable from the PS5 to the receiver, and another HDMI 2.1 cable from the receiver to the TV, there could *still* be something lost in the passthrough?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 года назад
@@ArcadianGenesis Well, since the RX-V385 is the first in its class to offer HDMI 2.1 ports, there might not be a difference after all. My Onkyo is a couple years old now, so it only has HDMI 2.0b and HDCP 2.2. That’s why I see a difference when I plug my XBOX directly into my C9. Try both ways, and test it out to know for sure. But since the CX processor is tailor made to produce stunning visuals, you probably want to let it process the picture. Yamaha is a trusted brand, but their chip is meant to process both picture AND audio. That’s a lot to process. So in the end, it might prove to be better to let the CX process picture, and the Yamaha to just process audio. But only testing will get to the real truth! 😀🙌
