In this video we turn recycled plastic HDPE bottles into a set of knife scales for this beautiful chef’s knife that was sent to us by Bespoke Bloke Designs. We made a custom knife scale plywood mould for this and then ripped the blank in half to give us a matching pair.
From looking around on RU-vid and Instagram, we can’t find anyone else that has used HDPE as scales on a chef’s knife in this way. Plenty of hidden tang versions but none as a full tang chef’s knife. If you have made one or seen one made then be sure to share it with us!
We chose to use Corby fasteners to attach the scales to the tang of the knife. This is because HDPE doesn’t work very well with glue. We did add black-tinted epoxy as well but this was mainly to act as a gap filler. The Corby fasteners are doing the majority of the holding work. We added some cut-lines and roughed ip the steel to give the epoxy a slightly better chance of holding.
This was a really fun build and we absolutely LOVE the end result. Definitely going to be making more of these in the future. What do you think of our colour selection? What colours would you chose?
