Ooo I love this line of thought...like...hybrid benders...do you think this could apply to other mixed heritage benders? Like hypothetically, Aang and Katara's children (Air and Water), what would they be able to bend? is there a natural combination of both? Or like fire and air etc.
@@wajihhassan6703 I don't know much about those kinds of bendings like lavabending but I wish there were more such mixtures in the canon universe and children of mixed heritage could explore these abilities, it would be really cool
I cry every single time Jinora gets her tattoos. Also you can master the 30 odd techniques without making a new one and still get tattoos. Jinora and Aang are just built different.
I think a lot of people don't notice it until you rewatch it, which is why I think it would've been nice if they addressed her by name a little sooner (and do it without the editing that makes it seem ominous). Have it be subtle and over time, rather than suddenly at the end and very overt.
@@Novenae_CCG Yeah, I wish they had introduced her back in her first scene with Su. Such great potential to plant the seeds for her character that ended up wasted bc they didn't know she would be important a little earlier.
@@barroslucasc They didn't intend for it to be that way though. If they had known the issues they'd face from Nickelodeon in season 4 while working on season 3, they probably would have done more to emphasize her then. But they had no idea that they'd get their funding cut while working on season 4 & have to drop her back story episode or fire most of the people working on the series. That's how we end up with that flashback episode.
Korra fighting with like 2L of mercury on her system, which is not only extremely toxic, but also weights almost 30kg. Anyone else would die instantly. And also make her skin absorb liquid metal is cold as hell 🥶
I JUST thought of that too!! It’s such an intense way to torture someone to death. And the fact that the Avatar State comes into play, which probably makes it all the more terrifying when all of the past lives are also fighting for their current life.
@@yunochiii Korra lost her connection with her past lives after battle with Vaatu and Unalak. Now, it is just her and Raava. But, technically, Raava should still remember Korras previous incarnations. I guess that the next earthbending avatar will solve this issue with connection.
@@yunochiii Shame on you!! 😄But I get it! Some people hated season 2. But I liked it. Yes, the concept of spirits went a different path in LoK, than it was in ATLA, but you can find some reasons. Yes, in ATLA spirits were kind of neutral beings, but even there was some hints about evil. In LoK, they went to it more obviously. And for me, it make sense. They bring some western representations of good and evil among the spirits. And about the connection? Look, even Aang was looking for another way to deal with problems, and completely ignored some advices from his previous incarnations. For me, with Korra all the avatar cycle comes full circle, like in the beginings, when Wan and Raava fused for the first time. Maybe it was actually very good - make end to all those traumas and regrets, that passes from one avatar to another thanks to Raavas presence. Every avatar made some mistakes, that made him or her regret him/his decisions, while dying. And if you remember, when Wan fused with Raava, Raava was very weakened, but when Korra fused second time with Raava, Raava was in her full potential, after Vaatu was dissolved.
@@robertmydla1481 I really don’t have anything to add (because I agree on all points and believe LOK deserves a lot more love and respect!), other than this OP Super Mega Shiny Korra fighting a giant buff, naked, spirit demon version of her Uncle in the middle of the ocean wasn’t on my BINGO card back in the 2010s 😂😂
I love that Korra's villains are all at the extreme end of different beliefs. The Earth Queen needed to be stopped, but instead of bringing equality Zaheer brought chaos.
@@imajinarylights3459If going by ideology it'd make more sense to have communism instead of equality for Amon and theocracy instead of dictatorship for Unalaq
They don't make sense though. They are right 90% of the time but then show need to make them evil so they do something horrible. Show says they are extremist uwu so bad and expect you to root for Korra who is just a badass fighter nad brings no peace or real solution to the problems as the Avatar. She's just there to fight, what happened to Avatar's spiritual role and their dedication to maintain peace and balance? She only cares if there is a villain she can fist fight. No real issue is ever solved in Lok. What did Korra or others do to solve any social and political issues? Nothing. They just defend "villains". Those villains' ideologies don't even make sense, they aren't anarchists or communists and we all know how fascism handled later hahaha zaheer talks about air nomads the whole time talks about using avatar to bring balance and spirit world and equality then next second talks about wiping out the air nomads it's not extremism it's cop out to make him look evil he goes downhill as a character after this episode
@@Xandtania "They are right 90% of the time but then show need to make them evil so they do something horrible" That is completely misunderstanding the point of the villains. These types of villains are ONLY villains because they THINK they're doing the right thing. They're not 90% right. They have a good ideal, but then see things as black and white ("If you're not with me, you're against me") Your entire post is basically a complete misread of what LoK is about It's like you purposefully misunderstood the show, due to having a bias against it because "it's not ATLA"
Lava bending requires movement akin to a water bender, as you need to cause the rocks to move and flow. Bolin was one of the BEST pro benders, which requires a less rigid, moving and shifting bending technique. Makes complete sense that he was destined to be a lava bender.
also considering his heritage of a fire nation mother and earth kingdom Father, plus a fire bending brother, more than likely he would be able to bend heated earth. Heck, Mako could probably manipulate the heat from magma if he tried.
@@lisaleyendekker8305 Definitely he could bend the heat within the magma and cool it back to solid rock (Sozin did so when fighting the volcano with Roku in ALAB. I remember seeing a thing the creators put out once saying that no amount of intermingling between nations could yield a person that can bend multiple elements, only the avatar can achieve this. We have seen before that studying the techniques different nations use can lead to the development of new skills (Iroh and lightning redirection), and so being raised in a multicultural city by a mixed nation family would 100% mean that he is more likely to bend in a more unique way. Plus look at his personality: He is stubborn in the protection of his friends, but is easily changeable and often influenced by the opinions of others. Changeable and stubborn - in my opinion exactly the unusual combination to describe molten earth.
Every time Tenzin really pops off with his airbending, it's worth remembering who taught him. Even before finding out he was the Avatar, Aang was an airbending prodigy, having earned his tattoos at only 12 years old, including inventing a new technique (the air scooter). It's amazing to imagine what else he would have developed after the original series. And then he taught everything he knew to his son.
Correct me if im wrong, but i thought part of becoming an airbending master is inventing a move. Cause someone once told me that Tenzins move was the big wheel spin scooter.
@@treeofrage7622 As far as I know there’s two ways of getting your tattoos, either you master airbending as in the individual skills or having a high level you invent a new airbending move. So you can be a master without creating your own move
The red lotus didn't expect Korra to be able to fight AT ALL while being poisoned. It just shows how strong willed Korra is and how much of a fighter she is. I love her so much. This show means so much to me ❤ I'm glad you're enjoying this show!!!
30:35 the fact that platinum is unbendable was introduced in s1! That's how Hiroshi Sato traps Lin, her officers, and Tenzin in his underground factory. I believe it's because when Toph first bent metal, she did it by feeling the little earth particles within the metal, but Platinum is considered "too pure" to detect those particles. Not sure if that holds up to our idea of science but that's how it works in the avatar universe!
I also think this is partly why Bolin is not able to metalbend! Bolin is a REALLY good earthbender, but he does not "listen" to the earth like Toph does. Toph's earthbending is more inward-focused I feel. While Bolin also has the ability to be precise (e.g. bending a tiny rock at Pli's eye), I don't think he would be able to detect the very, very small particles of earth in metal.
There is a theory that the air benders used to fly until the sky bison became their life long companions. Creating their earthly attachment. They gave up flight to have a best friend that flies.
I think Korra is such an underrated Avatar, I’m glad you mentioned about giving her more credit. She really does so much, and goes through so much, that it’s equal parts heartbreaking and epic. Aang will always be my favorite, but Korra is 2nd for me. I guess it’s just something about the Avatar and their hearts and everything they sacrifice and do for the world, mixed with their personalities, I just love them both so much. Can’t wait to season 4, this is the one I’ve been looking forward to you, bc you’re very smart and empathetic and thoughtful, and that’s magic for season 4.
Zaheer was naturally pretty good at airbending for someone that just got it and didn't have formal training but in a 1v1 fight with Tenzin he doesn't land a single clean blow and is pretty much on the run the whole time until he could get his companions to help him. And Tenzin held his own against 3 of them, w/ P'li finally being too much too overwhelm him.
@@felixhenson9926 Right, but that was mostly theory and he wasn't formally trained. I thought I saw somewhere that Airbending was the hardest of the bending styles to get a grasp on and it requires more hands on experience than the other bending forms.
54:23 you either have to master the 36 traditional tiers/techniques, or, like Aang, you can master 35 and create your own to total to 36 - not everyone is obligated to create a technique It's a reference/homage to a classic kung fu movie, "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin"
Asami is underused and underappreciated but when she does get to shine she doesn’t do it by half measures. Looking back at Korra in episode 1 of this season and comparing it to where she ends up is insane. Korra was starting to actually figure things out and had a productive goal. Now… oh boy. My poor girl.
It's only noticeable on rewatch, but Kuvira has been around since the metal clan episode, just being the main guard they've interacted with. Something to note is that seasons 3 & 4 were greenlit together, meaning they actually had time to set things up for the final season. Overall, this is still considered the best of the show for its compelling antagonists, darker tone, revival of the Air Nation and great character development. Though the final season is also a lot of fun. "It's great to see such a nice friendship between two girls." ....Yup. They're very good friends. A nice couple of gal pals.
I cry every time at the end of this season…korra is in so much pain mentally and physically that she literally cries …this is why honestly I love korra especially season 4 I struggle with ptsd so I relate so much .
This book was perfection for me! That's why I still watch so many reaction videos about Korra and especially Book 3! It had everything I wished for an Avatar season. Stunning fights, great choreography, excellent villains and the finale was pure emotion. This season was just incredible. Especially the scene where Korra and Zaheer were flying over the field. That was insanity. I put this above all the other books in the whole Avatar Universe
I’m not sure Zaheer knew exactly what needed to be done to become untethered. It seemed like at the point of P’Li passing, he realized that she was his earthly attachment and it all made sense to him at that moment.
I still feel like the betrayal of the team by hostaging the air nomads elsewhere was out of Zaheer’s character, since until then he had been completely honest and kind to everyone that wasn’t specifically opposing him (Korra and the queen). It felt like the show writers thought they made their villain too rational and help too many people, and had to give him a “kick the puppy” moment so kids didn’t root for him. It’s my biggest gripe with season 3 by far, since he’s otherwise Azula levels of interesting.
Yeah, it's kind of a problem, but at the same time it's just him being smart. It wasn't just about him breaking the deal, Korra's team broke the rules by preparing to not let him capture her as well. They double crossed each other. It can be argued that he anticipated it and made a plan b, while still intending to let them go if everything goes smoothly.
I think it was actually perfectly IN character for Zaheer to hold them hostage because I think for the sake of taking out Korra, he was willing to make an exception.
I disagree, there's a reason Tenzin was used as bait at the northern air temple: he was the leader who opposed him, so burying the temple along with the Avatar's friends was in character. However, keeping the air nomads captive was insurance against a rescue for Korra. if they tried to get Korra, the air nomads would be destroyed at zaheer's command, but if they got the air nomads, then zaheer would still have time and Korra would be destroyed, they can't have both. Plus, either one destroyed would be a major loss.
In my headcanon, he was probably going to release most of them after getting rid of Korra. If he could possibly use some of them to get to the President or other world leaders, that could have also been on the table. He definitely could have used Opal to get to Su.
Yes I always liked the idea that the end of the hundred year war where nations started interacting again, especially in republic city, would have blood likes crossing and hence subbending. Dont know what combos created combustion bending, if any. We know metal was offshoot w no mixing as with bloodbending. But maybe the next series will elaborate on that angle since technology has evened the playing field. Thus bending will adjust as well. Back and forth thru the eons
ive always disliked this theory for many reasons but also the fact that the only reason the avatat can bend all the elements is because of raava, the human body is only capable of holding one element so it wouldnt make sense for his earth bending to be influenced by his moms fire bending it also in my opinion just takws away from the devolopment it took for him to unlock the lava bending
@@dooda9566 I don't think the theory that Bolins Firenation history plays into it necessarily has to be physiological, but rather a more cultural/psychological aptitude. The Avatar or Irohs Lightning-Redirection are both practical examples of how you can be more attuned to something because you can get into the right headspace. Bolin doesn't have to be physically attuned to bending Lava, but he's got both firenation cultural heritage and his closest emotional bond is a firebender. Metal he doesn't understand, Fire is something he's grown up with, the same way Korra didn't understand Air and proved very nicely that the Avatars "opposite element" isn't necessarily the element-counter to their natural one. EDIT: Third example: Zafou has a lot of metal benders, when we hear all the time it's actually rare for earth benders to pick it up; but unlike other earth benders the kids born and raised in Zafou are raised in a metal bending culture. It's not physical.
@@oq1106 well i like that explanation much more but most people who spread this theroy dont dig too deep into it "Lava hot, so is fire so fire help make lava"
Jinora's spirit projection is what got her the tattoos, SP is a nearly Avatar lvl ability; part of the reason why Aang was so strong at his age, especially his A.S., was because as an Air-bender he actively focused on strengthening his spiritual connections, which by proxy would give him a strong connection to Ravaa (even though she didn't exist in Avatar lore at the time). I also think that's why Korra progressed as quickly as she did as well, remnants of Aang sort of bled into her; because remember for the first 16 years it was said that she had virtually no spirituality of her own whatsoever...
The destruction of the northern air temple by Gazan is the thing who got me the most considering aang's state when he discovered all the alterations by the scientist in ATLA...
The thing that gets me about Jinora getting her tattoos is thinking about Tenzin's. For his ceremony, they might have had air acolytes, but Aang would've been the only airbender for his son.
in general, in order to become a master of air bending, you need to master 36 techniques. In Aang's case, he mastered 35 of them and invented the air scooter, making 36 in total. Really shows how gifted he was in his native element, not even considering he's an avatar
It's a legitimate problem with old people that they sometimes won't leave houses when they are about to burn down. The fear of needing to rebuild in old age, and the attachment to objects of your past for your identity, somehow it results in a common psychological impulse to just let it happen. My neighbour nearly lost his house to a wildfire. He locked himself in the garage with his rottweilers around him and a shotgun draped over his lap. Not sure if he wanted to be surrounded by his identity or if it was a threat against anyone who would try to save him. His house ended up being narrowly missed.
Oh no totally understand that! It’s knowing the whole family is staying behind with her because she refuses to leave that bothered me 😆 she was choosing the house over her family.
This was a very strong theory that fans had at the time this season 3 premiered, which said that Bolin and Mako's grandmother was the girl Zuko had a date with in ATLA, the girl he met in his uncle tea saloon. I really think it was a good theory. It would have been nice if it were true. However, their names do not match, although they sound similar (Yin/Jin).
My headcanon is that the Grandma is either the baby or a descendent of the family the Gaang helped across the Serpent's pass. It would be such a great connection to have.
I don’t think that Zaheer was trying to kill Korra just because she differed from his beliefs. I rather believe that this was always the Red Lotus’s intention in the end. With the spirits free once Korra dies Raava would return to the Spirit World and battle Vatuu just as she had when Wan met her. The cycle would continue and leave the world to its own affairs without the avatar interfering or establishing any form of order. This would allow their anarchist ideal to grow and prosper as every nation would face the threat of revolution without the avatar to keep the status quo and balance.
35:25 You'll understand when you see the 4th season 53:33 She got the tattoos because she can enter the spirit world independently and project herself to other places.
1. Korra and Asami's "friendship"😊 2. Jinora becoming a master at a young age like her grandfather and she looks exactly like him😢 3. Zuko and Korra interaction + Iroh telling her about Aang and Zuko's friendship. ❤❤
really glad you're enjoying Korra so far, especially season 3 so far!!! adding a note about your comment about lavabending around 37:35 apparently earthbenders who are the child of a firebender and an earthbender have to capability to lavabend. which could be a newer thing because the nations always appeared to be quite separated until after the events of ATLA season 3. so people bending different elements being together might've been viewed as "taboo", still could be, but that's just really deep diving. i dont think the explanation of how somebody learns they're a lavabender is ever mentioned in the show...
Well.. For an Air Bender to become a Master, they need to master all 36 Air Bending techniques. However, the loophole is, an Air Bender can master 35 techniques and if they create their own they can get their tattoos. Aang mastered 35 techniques, then created the air scooter to get his tattoos. Unfortunately, since he didn't Master the 36th traditional technique, that technique is technically lost.
At 53:40, it isn't because he HAD to come up with his own technique, the nomads allowed him to become a master because instead of mastering a final technique, he had invented the air ball, so they accepted it as the final technique
Note about Jinora : a lot of people in the fandom spread a misinformation, you don’t have to invent a new technic to become a master, you have to master 36 specific forms. It happened that Aang mastered 35 and invented air scooter but it’s not the standard. (All air nomads has to become master it’s sort of coming of age rite so it would be too hard and unpractical for every of them to invent a technic, Aang was a prodigy even by nomads standard and so was Jinora
40:32 I don't think Lin was trying to actually kill Pli there, I think she just wanted to stop her from using her combustion bending by covering her head and blinding her eyes, but it just turned out Pli was about to make an explosion.
To clarify, Aang only mastered 34 of the 36 techniques, inventing th air scooter was the technicality that got him his tattoos. It wasnt required to invent your own technique, but it did count as a sort of "extra credit".
Tenzin is able to beat Zaheer alone, a prodigy that just got his powers some days ago against a master with years of training and experience. Tenzin could have won if the rest of the Red Lotus didn't interveen.
Best finale! Such a good season and I'm so interested to hear your thoughts on the final season as well as overview of the entire series vs your initial predictions/expectations 😊🎉
This is just my theory, but I don't think "detaching yourself from the world" means stopping to care or not having any goals in the real world. End of 2nd season original Avatar, Aang let go of his attachment to Katara (when he was closed int he crystals). He successfully did that, and thus gained access to the avatar state (and as we see later in life, he still uses it). He didn't stop caring about people, the world or Katara after that though. I think it just has to do with distance and self-distance.
I'm happy with how well the kataang siblings did considering who they were up against. Kaya is primary a healer so her fighting so well against someone as powerful at Ming Hua is impressive. Bumi is a new bender so him lasting as long as he did was huge! Then comes Tenzin who was soloing Zahir until those other bitches came in with a 4 on 1.
The best villians are the ones who have a cause that is fundamentally good, just taken too far or misapplied, so you can sympathise with their goals and even agree to a point, but in the end, you can see they are misguided in the way they apply them or the degree they take them too.
I feel like people don’t understand just how violent poisoning someone with mercury truly is. It’s such a cold (physically), destructive, and excruciatingly painful form of torture. Mercury is also HEAVY, I would imagine it would feel like someone is trying to shove a million, heavy, thick needles everywhere in your body all at once. The pressure on your body would be so intense, it’s insane. Then to still have the strength to fight it off?? Korra is amazing.
Not sure. Many past avatars could lava bend as well as a set group thay specialized it. You can see roku lava bending lore in some earlier eps of atla and kyoshi used it on chen.
The Queen was written so brilliantly. She is insufferable and we are meant to despise her, but she never actually does anything that is different from most monarchs. She overtaxes her citizens to fund her own lavish lifestyle, she looks down on commoners and does nothing to alleviate classism, and she conscripts her citizens to fight in her army. This causes us to dislike her and puts us automatically more into the anarchist position that Zaheer holds and forces us to consider its viability.
Bolin can lavabend because his father is earthbender and mother is a firebender or just from earth nation and fire nation. And as we know lava is sort of earth mixed with fire if I can say it like this. I just hope you understand what I'm trying to say
34:46 This look on Bolin's face breaks my heart every time I see it... He truly didn't know he could lavabend. He believes this is it, that it's about to end and he runs at that wall of lava with the faintest hope that his earthbending or body might do something to save Mako, Tenzin, and Asami.
39:46 I AGREE!! Avatar does this really well. You would think that getting rid of Pli would increase their chances of beating Zaheer, but they inadvertently "strengthen" him in a different way. If no one managed to beat anyone from the Red Lotus, the audience would feel like no progress is being made, so this is a good way to achieve a feeling of progress while maintaining a hard-to-beat villain. It's sort of similar in ATLA when they manage to find out about the eclipse. Randomly finding out about your enemy's greatest weakness could make a story worse - it can feel unearned or sort of like "main character syndrome." But in this case, finding out about the eclipse actually makes their lives so much harder. Appa is taken away, they have to go to Ba Sing Se where Aang almost dies, the day of black sun is not even a success. It's brilliant!
Bolin's mom and brother are fire benders. His father was an earth bender. The fact that Mako can also produce lightning. Really only stands to reason that Bolin would be a secondary lava bender.
Zaheer is NOT just killing people that oppose him. he's specifically killing people who in his opinion hold too much authority in this world. thats why it was so important that he kills her in the avatar state. Its not personal. Korra's personal convictions isnt why she has to die. He wants to just rid of the concept of the Avatar because the avatar is an authority figure. He also doesnt blame Korra for having this authority. To him its just something that needs to be done.
@@thecocoacouch well yeah, but i think he sees it as something everybody should be allowed to do to a worldleader. He doesnt have some sort of "im special, it has to be me" complex, he's and the red lotus are just the only ones willing
Korra may not be as good of a show as ATLA, but Zaheer is absolutely the best written villain (Zuko is a hero with a sticky past, but would otherwise share this spot). I believe the term for his character type is a "Magnificent Bastard" where his charisma and actions make us want to step up and shout "Oh you magnificent Bastard!"
