Sgian-dubh (skein do) is Scots Gaelic for Black Knife, and was given that name because traditionally, it had a bone handle, and was of a size that made it used so often that the dirt and oils from the users hands literally stained the bone black over time. Nowadays, as was mentioned, they are mostly for looks and are rather plastic and cheap feeling. Looking forward to seeing ya'll make one of good quality steel, and would love to see a bone handle, or maybe a nice dark wood like ebony.

O1 tool steel is my favourite steel for knives, it makes for a really tough blade. Just never over heat it or it will crumble and never touch it to water or IT WILL CRACK, OIL QUENCH ONLY. Since O1 is harder to move under your hammer than mild steel or 10XX series it can be tempting to heat it over orange heat to get the metal to move easier. It will move easier at a yellow orange but you're risking excessive grain growth and having the bar crumble under your hammer. It's also worth mentioning that you shouldn't hammer on O1 below a bright red heat or you will induce stresses that will twist and warp the steel during quench. Straighten the steel when it is red hot and not black like you would with other steels. Give it at least two stress relieving cycles before you grind and after you grind if you can. O1 is lovely but you really need to keep your steel in the proper temperature range the whole time you're forging it and do a thorough heat treatment. Fun fact: O1 will air harden if you have it in knife blade thicknesses which will squeak cobalt drill bits in a heart beat, the only way to drill through is carbide or diamond, (don't drop the blade or hammer on it either).

My elderly next door neighbor had a tree fall during our hurricane Irma here in the US. It smashed one of her prized bird feeders, so I offered to reconstruct it. The roof was a sheet of copper that was 12x12 " and 1/8 " thick. It was smashed up like a beer can. So I pounded it out flat with a 20 ounce framing hammer on my work bench. OH MY GOD , I don't know how you swing your hammers like you do! You are a beast !🙌 🙌

Hey Alec, i recently built my own forge similar in design to yours and i was wondering why i have flames shooting out about 6 inches past my fire brick walls in front while yours seems to just have a nice bright orange glow with minimal fire out side. The reason why this is such an issue is because my stock gets way to hot to touch by the 2nd heat even if its 3 feet long because its like a rocket. i find myself quenching my handle after every heat just to hold it. any advice would be appreciated also a few pictures of my forge on the first test run imgur.com/a/EQ9JT

I have become completely obsessed with becoming a blacksmith and you are my favorite guy to watch and learn from. I havent forged a knife yet but i want my first knife to be damascus that i make. I dont care if i forge a lump of crap i want to start out doing it right. These videos of guys drawing a knife on a peice of flat steel and heating and tapping a bunch of hammer marks then acid etching it to pretend to looked forged is bullshit and those guys should be embarrassed to even post such a video. The only thing they forge is a forgery of being a blacksmith. I have a special idea for a damascus pattern i want to make for you and ship to you as a gift. Youre gping to love the knife i send you

Love your shows and watch them a lot. I am currently serving my country in the US Coast Guard but I am originally from the Island of Pohnpei. I invite you to visit and if you like it you are welcome to stay.

Good day guys! I have some questions here and i know it is out of the topic here but anyways my questions are: Is there any relationship between the pressure that releases by the tank and the pressure releases when it pass through the orifice? Does the output pressure change? I thank in advance from the bottom of my name to those who will answer. (dont mind my grammar pls)

Mike Boyd learns new extraordinary things. Alec, I'm throwing you "easy" challenge. Try to learn swing the hammer with your left hand! ;)

Alec, your reaction to the dice I think sums up in one moment what I love about your channel and your work overall-so much energy, enthusiasm, and honesty. I've been catching up on your videos after discovering you a few days ago, and I love every minute of it.

Dubh is the gaelic or "Irish" for black/dark. We in Ireland pronounce it "dove" as in the flying creature. Keep up the great videos 👌

Cold weather is coming soon, I recommend a Crock Pot / Dutch oven / Slow cooker for a kitchen up grade. Add meat and veg in the morning and have great stew/roast 8 hours later. #ripchefmike #ChefSlow

just want to point this out.. the "thing" chefs use is called a honing rod, or honing steel. they don't sharpen blades. the blade already has to be sharp to use it. over time, the edge of a blade gets bent and curled over. the honing rod/steel straightens that edge. although a person who doesn't know how to use them will most likely just make the edge worse anyway.

I am not surprised that Mike was surprised at how sharp the blade is,if he used stainless steel knives and switched to carbon steel, the structure of carbon steel makes a difference. Carbon steel is easier to get sharp than stainless steel mainly because of carbides. It is easier to get carbides in stainless steel because carbon will carbide with chromium, carbides are large in compassion to the rest of the steel and act like sandpaper when you want a glass like edge. A smooth edge makes for a smooth and efficient slice, while carbides form chunks in the steel and make for more difficult razor edges.
