He Describes A 1950s Life Of Crime & Why He Did It.

This is a very unusual 16mm film from the 1950s that attempts to be a documentary. In some ways I believe it is. From what I can tell, the man speaking behind the mask is not an actor. This is a clip from a a police training video made in the state of Michigan to help police officers deal with lifelong criminals and understand them more deeply.
Reading the credits at the end of the film, the criminal is not credited. The film is part of my archive which has thousands of films from the 1950s that I collected over the course of my life.
Although somewhat 1950 styles formal in the way the criminal is interviewed, I find this man and the story he tells and the way he tells it, fascinating. There is something hauntingly real about how he describes his family, his upbringing, his attitude towards the crimes that he committed, what the film describes as "the criminal mind." The interviewer who was a well-known police officer from that time is just asking frank questions spoken with no emotion-we call it flat. The subject is also responding with no emotion. But those of you watching this who weren't around at that time should know that this piece of film was considered outrageously real for its time.
I do not believe that I have seen a recently produced documentary that explains, as bluntly as this one, a life of crime and what might have caused someone to become a criminal, breaking the law as consistently and as coolly as this gentleman did.
If you found this of interest, I would appreciate your clicking on the super thanks button below the video screen to the right. Your support helps me to go forward in my archive and find more clips of interest to you and other subscribers.
Thank you
David Hoffman filmmaker

To my surprise, their conversation is really easy to comprehend and is understandable for me, not an American but a foreign learner of English as a second language, possibly because the 1950’s English is very similar to my English textbooks in every sense, the vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and usage, composition, and so on. @@PaulsRU-vid You haven't read very much old literature then. Try reading things form the 1800's. Their sentence structure was _much_ more complex than ours. It's a natural tendency to move from complex words diction, to simpler. We used to call it a taximeter-cabriolet. Then it was a taxi-cab. then it was a taxi. Then it was a cab.
@michaelrose93
@michaelrose93 2 года назад
@@PaulsRU-vid So am I. My grandmother was showing my mom a bunch of old letters (from the very early 1900s or earlier) and she was amazed at how long and complex their sentences were. My mom asked if that's the way people wrote back then and she said that it was. Just look at modern journalists, many of them can barely write, they have no command of English whatsoever. Besides, even if you compare _professional_ writers of a couple hundred years ago to ones today, you will usually find that their sentences were longer and more complex, and if that was the case for them, we can infer it was also the case for the common speaker. P.S. Even in my own life, I have witnessed the English language devolve to an extent I never thought possible.

@@hoodyk7342 maybe, but its hard to read someone in just a few minutes. Like, if you got into trouble VERY often it might become easy to keep your cool during interviews where as someone that gets in trouble the first time and didn't want to would probably flip out. He absolutely does have something mental going on but I'd say its hard to know exactly what, but i wouldn't say stress is the only thing that make that true or not since you can feel stressed but sound calm. Psychopathy is also horribly misrepresented by media as well, a lack of understanding of other does make it easy to be a bad person but some people also forget that some people with psychopathy or other anti-social things going on can sometimes get treatment that works well enough for them to stay out of trouble or even have families of their own. It doesn't quite relate to this guy but I did want to point out that what you think psychopathy is MIGHT be different then how it works in real life since it works on a scale, and isn't a "on or off" type illness. TLDR: youre probably right but i see a lot of people label every criminal they see a "psychopath" and it gets kind of annoying

Hey, in case nobody pointed it out, the interviewer is incredibly professional and unchallenged by most of today's interviewers. He really tried to get into the root of the man's history (subsequently, his crime[s]), neither appealing to any subjective matters like politics or emotion nor trying to elicit any responses he deemed necessary to make the criminal look more evil than he is.

Good point! I noticed that too. I bet people sixty years from now will think we have an odd cadence in our voice. However, people are amazingly good at adopting the speech mannerisms appropriate to their environment - especially when they’re under thirty. After thirty, those speech mannerisms are kind of fixed and hard to lose. I studied languages in college, and forty years later I couldn’t possibly do that now. A new language? At my age? Extremely unlikely.

John Vigil - It’s interesting to ponder why there was so little difference between the speech patterns of the interviewer and the criminal. The fifties had a good economy and a lot of resources for education (for most people), so, even criminals had a decent education. Today, you can tell a person’s social and economic status just by listening to them for a few seconds. I knew a guy who spoke like a hood in his early twenties and now you would never know he ever spoke like that. His “hood” speak was an affectation he used to fit in with his friends at the time though. People can affect speech patterns amazingly well when they’re young.

Excellent upload! Definitely provides a contrast with the "Greatest Juvenile Delinquents of the 1950's" interview. (I mean that sincerely!) :-) It's good not to glorify these guys, because regardless of the vintage aesthetic, this guy's still a criminal, and was still dangerous.
