Despite their ubiquitous captive population, wild axolotls are critically endangered. The amphibians once inhabited the high-altitude lakes around Mexico City, but habitat degradation has limited them to only in a few inland canals in the area. A 2019 assessment by the International Union for the Conservation of Species found only between 50 and a thousand axolotls are left in the wild-and their populations are dropping.

But they contribute nothing to the environment so their extinction in the wild will be more of a cultural loss (since the indigenous people value them like that) without any serious ramifications. It's better that these animals end up as pets at least they'll be safe.

Here’s a tip: don’t feed ur axolotl between 1-2 days ( don’t feed ur axolotl everyday), only feed them 4 times in a week ( feed them on mon wed Fri and Sunday- another tip: keep your axolotl happy, don’t give it any fish in its tank,give it great care and give water changes every week. Make sure not to shake them at ALL. If the water is going ruff the axolotl will not like it. Keep the water temp between 15 and 20 - thanks for reading ! 😀 ( these are true tips)

Given how meme worthy, cute, and number of captive breeding programs are out there, they likely won't go extinct. Extinct in the wild though? At the risk of sounding pessimistic we may have already reach a point of no return. It's depressing that these guys may be dependant on human care to preserve their species considering our pollution, habitat destruction, and intro of non-native species is what screwed them over in the first place...

You’re also not supposed to remove them from water. Their “bones” are mainly made up of cartilage and have trouble supporting their own weight when not completely submerged. Becca take a damn seat and listen. These are critically endangered animals that you are trying to buy from "reputable breeders". @flamer8415
@flamer8415 2 года назад
@@phole1100 what the hell are the breeders supposed to do to help them survive in the natural habitat? Fix global warming? Travel down to stop govements and major companies selling off and destroying the land they live in? Are they doing it for money? Yes. Are they also indirectly helping a critically endangered species from going extinct? Yes. A reputable breeder can indeed exist. While most do it for money some also have morals and they don’t let money cross their morals. While others may just mass breed and not care how any of them survive. It’s like comparing a puppy kennel from a small family breeding a few puppies a year if not less and selling them to someone who borderline industrialized it. Granted, I don’t trust the guy shown in the video. From what I have seen he also takes part in axolotl splicing where they sever two parts of two axolotls, switch, then fuse them to get split colors. That AND the land axolotl only happens when it has to EVOLVE meaning it has no chance to survive unless it happens… meaning it was probably badly mistreated for weeks before managing to form. It’s so rare because 90%+ of them will die before evolving to that state. (Granted… there is also a beyond abysmal chance it naturally happened without being forced/abused… but considering that he seems to have industrialized it I think he either bought it or created it himself)

These comments are sad. So many people do not seem to understand that while, yes this is a business, they are not only not poaching the breeding stock from Mexico they are helping to diversify the gene pool. Yes, it is an exotic animal, but it is ethically done. Look at their setup and breeding tanks. Besides pollution and land contamination in the wild there would be other animals eating most of the young, here more are born per clutch and survive. Breeders and zoos are keeping species from being wiped out. If that lake in Mexico suffers a plane crash or some other catastrophe, that is it for this species of aquatic salamander. Breeders like this, who have stated they wish to help out the area where axolotls originate, would be KEY to restoring the population. Much like how the Bronx and Toledo zoos helped to bring back an extinct species of frog. I swear, people see one episode of Tiger King and think every breeder is a bad thing. It is better to buy from a licensed and respectable breeder than poach a wild one.

@@ethanvanderjagt5892 that's what I was thinking but I grew up on the river and am fairly familiar with what we have in our water. I know I was on one but I remember the dark blue/ purple color, size and bristly gills distinctly. Was thinking maybe a breeder that was set loose? Makes no sense for a wild one to be so far from home. Thing was huge, foot long maybe and as big around as a red bull can.

@maileensoundso1547
@maileensoundso1547 2 года назад
you dont need live worms to keep axolotl. You can feed them bits of frozen freshwater fish and shrimps from the supermarket after you defrosted them. Also red and black mosquito larvae from the pet store, freshwater snails and also there are some good axolotl pelets out there. Just make sure you can keep your tank cool enought. They enjoy water between around 18c celsius. And they like hard water.
@thepaganapostate3208
@thepaganapostate3208 Год назад
Raise them for feeding yourself then. Like buy when available, set up a tank for worms, feed food scraps, and mist the dirt often. They should be fine with that but always consider doing more research to find out exactly how to do so. Also raising axie food animals is a way to always have food supply and probably saves on money in the long run.

interesting how he keeps baby axolotls crammed together even though tend to be cannibalistic toward eachother until they reach a certain size..im pretty sure this is due to them having horrible eyesight hence the "only-eating live" thing (i could be wrong & misremembering though).. and did they forget to mention the trend of people using iodine to morph axolotls out of their juvenile stage ( which is "their stage" their entire life, they dont morph into salamanders) and how cruel it is to try and morph your axolotl ? this dude probably did just..stumble upon an axolotl that morphed without iodine but . still. lol. ---and about the endangerment of their species, isnt this mostly due to industrializing their habitats and now only like 1 natural habitat of theirs remains? im pretty sure its not because of people breeding axolotls entirely? im not sure but ! this video rubs me the wrong way :D
@georgesoural235

It feels that way to me too. It honestly feels like this guy saw axolotls as a means to another cruel fish industry. Selling "rare" axolotls is disgusting, as it's greedy people trying to create artificial value, and thus profit. Also, "breeds" supports inbreeding and presents them as more of a "investment" rather than a living companion. These people do this, all the while being praised for "saving" the species!

Lots of people keep baby axolotls in the same tank because they are so small. If you have one tank for every axolotl, that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars- This guy clearly knows what he’s doing. Sure, some things can be added- but you can’t expect him to put every baby axolotl in their own tank. Axolotls have hundreds of eggs at once, so tanks, filters, hides, etc would cost much more.
@cassyrea3726
@cassyrea3726 2 года назад
well i don’t think he should be putting one alone in a tank but i think there’s simply just too many in one tank together 😐 honestly this dude probably makes a fuck ton of money given the setups and amount he breeds .. i mean axolotls r an easy to care for breed they’re not a saltwater fish or some shit im sure there could be a better way to do it ? maybe just seeing the behind the scenes of their breeding makes me feel weird idk
@cassyrea3726
@cassyrea3726 2 года назад
i mean their enclosures r def better than plenty of household pets i’ve seen so i guess it’s not terrible >_> the process of breeding go in such large quantities is just so sus to me it feels like an inbreeding hotel 😐 also isn’t it possible to keep baby axolotls in little tubs (with lids ) until they reach an appropriate size for a tank? i’ve seen people keep tadpoles in tubs >_>

The reason behind the axlotl growing lungs was because it reached full maturity which is uncommon in the species. Most never get to this point because of their aquatic lifestyle in the wild. Reaching full maturity also means they lose their regenerative abilities, which they only retain as long as they have gills and sadly this particular axlotl will eventually die of old age.
