The crisis across America’s campuses is causing some controversy over the current definition of antisemitism, as written by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. It’s a definition which has been adopted by countries across the globe. Author Kenneth Stern led the drafting of that document, and he joins the show with a warning that it’s being used to stifle free speech.

So Netanyahu doesn't want anyone living in Israel but Jews yet it's alright for Jews to live in other countries. Make it make sense. He and others are prejudiced but don't want push back and they will always call you a anti-semite. This is outrageous.

Criticism of Israel should not be conflated with antisemitism. Other groups like the Irish and Italians have faced discrimination and bigotry in the USA in the past. If someone criticizes the government of Ireland, that does not make them bigoted against Irish people. Criticism of the Italian government likewise does not make someone anti-Italian. Disclosure: my ancestors came to the USA from Ireland during the potato famine in the 1800s.

They just left Europe and claimed the land of Palestine/Israel for themselves. No one knows who these people were. They had no family members living in Palestine/Israel before they emigrated there. Canaanan land was given to The ANCIENT ISRAELITES and they lived there until they became disobedient to the Laws and Commandments of God. They worshipped pagan Gods and put their own children through the fire to Molech pagan God. God punished the ANCIENT ISRAELITES according to Deuteronomy 28 the Blessings and the Curses. He punished them and scattered them to the uttermost parts of the Earth. God himself punished them. The Curses of God fell on them. God said that he would return his people whom he scattered. These people who emigrated to Israel went their on their own on a Zionist political nationalist movement and ideology. When God returns his people they will return to ISRAEL worshipping God and being spiritual not secular. God is nowhere in ZIONISM. The men who promoted it were ATHEIST.

@d4mdcykey It absolutely is too much especially when they themselves oppress and hate a people themselves. I don't feel people go around saying we hate Jews. They don't like some of their behaviors they have and things they do. Then when you call them out, they call you a ANTI-SEMITE. That's a weapon. Many times it's not true but if they call you that they try to label you and associate you with the Holocaust. The American taxpayer's money is being sent to Israel in the amount of $ 3.8 billions of dollars each year and for what? Then recently billions more was sent to Israel. America won't spend billions of our taxpayer's dollars on us. They keep saying we have to cut food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security because we don't have the money yet magically they come up with BILLIONS OF DOLLARS for Ukraine and Israel and Taiwan. That billions of dollars should be going towards Social Security and Medicaid and Medicare and Education. Yet, Americans are funding a state in the Middle East who wouldn't even let us live in one of those illegal settlements that our taxpayer's dollars subsidize unwillingly. Their only concern is themselves and that is selfish behavior. I ask AMERICA, are we going to give Israel Billions of dollars FOREVER? Is our Government going to say for each year that America has to fund Israel because they are a Democratic state? That is not AMERICA'S responsibility at all. They wanted Israel, so they musts take care of themselves. America must stop putting Israel before AMERICA and the A PEOPLE. NOW, the Congress is pushing a Bill to impede our First Amendment rights to FREE SPEECH. Americans are losing their rights to accommodate a specific people who claim all ties to another country Israel. There is no allegience to the United States of America. We must push back and not become second class citizens in our own land. We cannot be made prisoners in our own land and be dictated to and used for our BILLIONS OF TAXPAYER'S DOLLARS.

I am disturbed but not surprised that powers in America such as university presidents treat Palestinians and pro-Palestinian demonstrators as implicitly wrong and violent - such are Jewish and Israeli political forces in the US that they can dictate positions. And I'm a Vietnam Era veteran, so I know what political protest (and suppression) look like. I expect PBS coverage to be more even-handed. I may have missed episodes that discuss the lack of a term that equates to antisemitism or Islamophobia, but for the Palestinian people that were run off their land and virtually imprisoned en masse in their own homeland. Thanks to Israeli politicians setting the agenda both there and in the US, there is no discussion of what makes targeted killings and mass murders by IDF defensive military operations, but similar acts by Hamas are terrorism not only by Hamas, but conflated with the entire Palestinian people. Likewise, the "river to the sea" rhetoric is apparently a problem for pro-Palestinians, but perfectly fine for right-wing extremists in the Knesset who have long intended to run all Palestinians out of the country that was theirs, into the sea if possible. Netanyahu made it clear years ago that he will never accept a two state solution, and he's moved even farther right to salvage his career. He's withheld food, water and electricity from Gaza to literally starve its people, a war crime. Its young children are half the normal body weight, leaving them with a lifelong disability (which doesn't seem to be a problem to the American Sanctity of Life crowd). IDF is killing members of the press in cold blood and suppressing coverage by not allowing access. I look to PBS to investigate issues being ignored by the mainstream press, not to be an echo chamber about abused topics such as antisemitism.

Same with communism back in the day during McCarthyism. Communism= Russian pawn. That was largely not true, but played on everyone’s fears and ruined the lives of those targeted for little more than being isolationists or so called “subversive” individuals. I fundamentally disagree with communism simply because it’s impossible to be done without being repressive, but I respect that people believe differently from me. just as I respect people who denounce the actions of the israeli government despite my belief in Israel’s existence, because I agree that the violence must end immediately. Fundamentally, there’s a lack of understanding of what Zionism truly means, which is simply the existence of a Jewish state. It doesn’t mean a Jewish state at the expense of Palestinians, or that the West Bank is fair game to Israeli settlers, or that Palestinians are inherently the enemy of Israelis. people who consider themselves anti-Zionist by definition are anti the existence of Israel. Which for that to be a reality, means expelling or killing 10 million people, including roughly 8 million Jews and 2 million Arab Israelis. I think that is why some consider anti Zionism to be antisemitism (which I don’t necessarily agree with). Everything I just listed is why a two state solution is simply the only way forward. Israelis need security guarantees against terrorist attacks, and Palestinians need freedom of movement, economic opportunity, and for Israel to leave decision making to an Arab coalition until a proper Palestinian government forms.

On the larger point, there are people who are on the right side (IMO) on these issues of free speech and public discourse who are most certainly not pro-Palestinian. Honestly, this issue is more important long term / big-picture... We can't even really engage in trying to change minds unless we can discuss and debate. This guy self-identified as a Zionist, but he's pretty much correct about the speech issues he's talking about here IMO. That means he is, at least in theory, open to listening and compromise. On the Zionism, his 'side' looks like it might just lose the public debate, and he's still defending the importance of having that debate.

Let me start with my firm position since 1980es that settlements was the biggest mistake that Israeli political class made by yielding to their religious right, I am also a staunch anti-Trumper. But you are blaming the entire country for the sins of their political right which exploited the fears of the people after country's failed attempts to reach peace with the party that never acknowledged it's right to exist, after Israel was brutally attacked in 1967, 1973 and endless times in between and after? The same can be applied to the US, if you look at the US from the perspective of Trump government. Trump government does not define the entire US, in the same way as Netanyahu government does not define entire Israel. More than a half Israelis want Netanyahu to resign, 10% of Israeli population marched against Netanyahu in a single day. Compare that to American protests against Trump in 2017: 2.3% of the population. Does it mean that you and I are more guilty of the sins of Trump administration than ordinary Israelis are guilty of Netanyahu's sins? As for your reference to Native Americans kicking us out of our homes, this is exactly what those student protesters want, to kick the Jews out of the land that supposedly belongs only to the Palestinians, under the banner of anti-Zionism. It is way easier to demand that other invaders vacate the land which their ancestors inhabited 2000 years ago while being an invader in the land where your ancestors never resided until 200 years ago and feeling great about yourself.

@keyser021 18 дней назад
@@Tamara-qd5dc Any logic of owning land that your "ancestors" inhabited 2,000yrs ago means for Israelis to morally exist upon that land, every US tax payer would then be uprooted and the land given back to the Black Feet tribe and all others from which it was very, very, very recently stollen by force. European Jews have zero claim to land they stole a mere few yrs ago back in 1948. The issue confronting the world, which only a very, very small percentage simply refuse to acknowledge, is that Israel is committing mass murder on an industrial scale, eviscerating young boys and girls, out of pure vengeance and hatred. There is no place in Heaven for such deeds. Israel is committing blasphemy before the eyes of Humanity. That is the issue. Words will not blind the world to evil. God does not contradict.
@geofflepper3207
@geofflepper3207 18 дней назад
An Indigenous person whose great grandparents had their land stolen has some credibility (though no - I'm not saying that all non-Indigenous people need to leave the United States - just that claims that Indigenous land was stolen should be taken seriously and compensation from government should be a possibility). On the other hand Zionists ranting about who lived in Palestine thousands of years ago have no credibility, especially if they are white, European Jewish Zionists whose European ancestors converted to Judaism and they are demanding land from Palestinians who have an ancestral connection to the Jewish people who lived in Palestine thousands of years ago.
@geofflepper3207
@geofflepper3207 18 дней назад
@Tamara-qd5dc Two big differences between the United States and Israel. First, although the series of American invasions into the lands of Indigenous nations in the 1800s was horrific and inexcusable it was done in the era of European imperialism when such things were commonly done around the world. The Zionist invasion into Palestine on the other hand, though it started in the 1800s, really became established in 1948 when the Zionists declared that they had stolen over half the land in Palestine. In 1948 the era of European imperialism was clearly winding down as India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia and the Philippines had been freed from colonial rule and within 15 years virtually all such racist colonialist oppressive apartheid regimes created by European invaders had been dismantled or at least had eliminated virtually all of their explicitly racist, apartheid laws. In 1948 it was clearly a ludicrous, outdated idea to set up a new colonial regime just as a country deciding to start banning women from voting in 1948 would have been ludicrous and outdated. The other big difference is that in the United States Indigenous people are not locked in overcrowded impoverished prison camps and ordered to go through endless checkpoints and banned from going on the best roads and are not banned from voting or running for election and there are not vast numbers of Indigenous people living in refugee camps outside the United States as stateless refugees affer being chased right out of the country. So the history in the United States in terms of how Indigenous people were treated was horrific and there are still huge problems with systemic racism as there is in Canada and Australia and other countries with a lot of white settlers but the horrific oppressive apartheid regime that the Zionists run in Palestine is on a completely different scale of horror and has continued many decades after similar regimes around the world have been dismantled or ended their racist laws. And there is a general feeling now in the United States, especially among young people, that racism and apartheid laws targeting Indigenous people are wrong whereas in Israel the overwhelming majority of Zionists seem to want their apartheid system to continue forever or to have Palestinians driven completely out of Palestine. So I question how it will be possible for Palestinians to ever share the same land with Zionists who tend to be very illogical, hypocritical, fanatical and racist. Obviously, the Israeli protests were not about giving Palestinians full freedom and rights - they were about complaints of Zionists regarding their government. And you're being very misleading in claiming that other countries were always to blame for conflict with Israel. Remember that Zionists started the conflict by trying to steal over half of Palestine in 1948 after WW2 when the era of Imperialist invasions was supposed to be over. Remember too that Israel invaded Egypt in 1956 and attacked Egypt in 1967 and invaded Lebanon in 1982.

If everyone started looking at the complexities of language and the uses and intents behind it, we might actually solve problems, and that's not what many people crave in the moment.
