@@briellehenderson922 exactly what I was going to say, if the whistle happened 20 times it’d get less scary after like the 7th, but it just always instilled fear when you knew he was on puss’ ass
Dreamworks has heart, learns from its mistakes, and has balls Disney had gotten out of touch with everything Illumination just went downhill after despicable me
It felt like he was talking to those people who would theorize his back story or something, so he just shut those types of theories down before they could happen 😂
I dont thinks its sick but he looks cool it was way more sick when puss gives him a taste of his own medicine at the end than tells mr death straight up to pick up his own weapon after death kept acting like an edgy emo kid but i do have respect for death letting him go because he only came up to puss since he was being a prideful full of himself being so it was nice he reminded him that no one is immortal and that their are things that matter more.
@@animelover12261 bruh is really out here calling the literal concept of death an edgy emo kid. Of all the characters, he gets the pass to act that way BECAUSE of Puss being treating his lives like they mean nothing 💀
What makes him so unique is that he barely takes up any screen time, but when he’s on, literally nothing else matters. Everyone wants the star, not Death, he doesn’t care about that. He just wants your soul. And sometimes you’re not even sure if he’s actually there or if its just your fear playing tricks on you.
For the people who didn't know, the voice of Death/Lobo is from a actor named Wager Moura, a astonishing Brazilian actor, by the way, he is the same guy who played the role of Pablo Escobar from the Netflix show Narcos.
“then puss and death were fighting at the end” when he kicked him in the head and he lost his dual wield weapon (1) and puss kicked it and then said “pick it up” it was the best comeback and revenge ever seen in a movie
Literally clarifies that he is in fact the grim reaper himself and shows himself for everyone to see at the end of the movie to show he's real and not just in Puss's head and somehow some people still are like "but is he tho"
literally every voice actor in this movie is perfect, and I don't mean that metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way..
He genuinely gives me fear. not like screaming, but goosebumps. ESPECIALLY with the whistle and when he says "pick it up" in his first fight with Puss.
He would appear and just start whistling at Puss, shit was creepy. Fucked with Puss so badly that the “Fearless humble hero” shit himself and gave up his name bc of it.
No friend, it's the fact that there's not much of him that left the best impression on the viewers. If there'd been more of him, the impression would be lessened. We wouldn't fear him.
I feel like the animators wanted him to have that unsettling effect. And they did such a good job with it. His whole character is just a piece of work!
I love this character, and I don't mean that metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or any other fancy way. I love him, straight. up.
The most terrifying part about this "villain"? That he isn't even evil, not even in the slightest. Just upholding the order yet feared not because of who he is but because what it is.
That would move him from the villain category to the antagonist category. A villain always falls in the antagonist category, but an antagonist doesn’t always fall in the villain category.
He's going out of his way to kill Puss because he doesn't like cats having 9 lives and how Puss basically just threw all his away. I think you missed this. He isn't just maintaining order
Same. I especially love how he says he doesn't mean that he's Death "metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way".
@@maelstrom_n You're aware that when he says "straight up", he says in regards to him being actual Death and not the time it took him to tell Puss that he is, right? Also, if the reveal had been done at the bar, I doubt it would've been as effective as it was in the movie.
@@AngelicoCiudad there's been tons of good ones but mostly coming from smaller studios or poorly advertised (Wolf walkers, Mitchell's vs the Machines for example)
I see the wolf as a representation of a relentless predator because he never stops hunting puss. He is always stalking. His cloak with sickles (A reference to the scythe normally used by the reaper) and his speed mix in a way to show puss and us that no matter how fast we or puss are. Death will always be faster and inevitable. Just as if you tried to outrun a wolf.
Death is a shape-shifting being who actually was a real myth in a town where people heard whistles at night and they would lock themselves in their house, and they said to have seen a wolf being who whistles and whenever they hear the whistles a live has been taken or is about to
@@youtubeaccount6726 I'm referring to it being top animation for a western film, I've got just about all of Miyazaki's collection on dvd/blu ray and Studio Chizu movies, and currently enjoying the ancient magus' bride so I don't get that jab assuming I don't watch Eastern animation?
In this scene when the glass cracks it cracks in the shape of a wolf skull. Also in the scene where Death whistles and puss turns away from the battle to see him standing there, the composition of the frame forms a skull. Lots of symbolism around this character it’s super cool.
The tai lung only appears 10:11 into the Kung Fu panda film and the film is one hour and 32 minutes long. And it only appears in tense moments, in the same way as the wolf
@@brose-bg3ks also foreshadowing at the beginning when he says “everyone thinks they’ll be the one to escape me”. At first we think it means he’s just a good bounty hunter, in reality just like the doctor said, “Death comes for us all”
if puss in boots was hunted by death it just goes to show how great and popular puss was! as we only see parts of his life they should add his past life journeys too!
Dude is in the film for like 15 mins approx, absolutely incredible presence. The lines, the delivery, the VA (Wagner Moura was badass), the design and Art. Everything makes Death/The Wolf perfect. Great villain up there with Gary Oldman as Shen.
I love how his voice isn't even scary. It matches him perfectly and I say that because people tend to give these types of characters a deep growly voice , he just has a normal voice with a growl
He is basically Far Far Aways' version of Hades so Death is practically a God. A dark, powerful God which makes sense how he's able to pop in and out of existence in the material world. Only showing himself to Puss and no one else(except for the final battle where at that point he didn't give a dam whoever sees him). Not to mention, he can cause illusions and is unaffected by the Wishing Stars magic barrier(as we can see it kill Jack's henchwoman and almost killed Baby but Death walked straight through it effortlessly). Puss really is a legend. Imagine being so arrogant you piss off the God of the Underworld and summon him from Hell without even trying.
Death isnt a underworld god , in any mythology or religion, death is something beyond that, it is the soul hunter, the one who collect souls, who move them, who ensures the dead are dead, it is a worker, not a ruler, it is a embodiment, a entity, not a god, it exist to ensure that the living actually die when they die, where the soul of the dead will go is not of its concern, its just there to rip it(soul) out of the living flesh, and ensuring it cant go back there, that is death.
He’s actually even more terrifying than that as a concept as he goes even beyond a god for one day, he’ll even reap them to. For even when the last star dies and creation ends, death shall remain eternal.
That tends to be the case for any all powerful entity that embody an aspect of reality, they can appear in any way they choose depending on how they wish to present themselves.
I also agree. Cats hate dogs and wolves are the most powerful dogs out there so it makes sense why puss sees a wolf. For anyone saying hyenas > wolves, puss has probably never seen a hyena
Bro, this guy was such a great antagonist. Amazing design and presence, left such a MAJOR impact on the movie from the very second he shows up, and always gets right to the point. I also love how the movie keeps dropping subtle hints about this before the big reveal like how he appears next to Puss in the bar out of literally nowhere.
There are also subtler cues like the number 8 appearing in various forms: eight tally marks, the bell ringing eight times, Puss drinking eight glasses of milk, the bar having eight unlit candles in its chandelier, etc.
I used to think he was just this movie’s “big bad wolf” because of the fairy tale theme but no, this guy is quite literally the physical manifestation of D E A T H
@@dataexpunged4784 Runpelstilstikin already existed too and they rebooted him for Shrek Forever. But well, the Big Bad Wolf is a lot more iconic character in Shrek's movies than Rumpel were before Shrek Forever
Lobo is possibly one of the best villains that Dreamworks have ever created. He actually made this film amazing with some of the coldest lines I've ever heard in an animated film.
Technically it was Jack but really death was the villain for puss in boots alone. But he really was one of the best characters even if he was just in shadows. The whistle and all was perfect
Love how they make him more than a creature, but a powerful entity. Seeing the other characters pass through the wishing star barrier and get magically popped, then seeing him walk right through like nothing was truly awesome, and showed in some way he is more powerful than a world altering wish.
@@anandparameswaran2665 what does that word mean? I’ve heard of a Protagonist, and an Antagonist, but never that word, that I don’t know how to spell, let alone pronounce
You can see that the cracks in the crystal form a wolf skull around his face before shattering. This movie went fucking HARD. Especially with the anxiety attack scene
@@MxPigeon yeah. Anyone who has had one of those knows. That scene hit me hard, reminded me of a major panic attack I had and my friend and former supervisor calming me down. That scene tore me up. Major flash backs.
I feel like him talking is better because if he didn't, we wouldn't get a lot. Like don't get me wrong, love silent imagery and storytelling, but i feel like this Death is too active to be just silent. Like he had too much to say to be silent, especially for Puss. Maybe if the scenes were changed a little, maybe but dialogue feels too involved...
It would very bad. There would be no motivation, no reveal, a poor introduction and a horrible climax. Plus, the introduction is also made to be scary. Even so, maybe no dialogue would be scarier but puss' whole arc would be gone aswell, and without his arc the movie wouldn't be anything, really. It would be a shallow villain that would be good for individual scenes and the only way he could drive the plot is probably by killing people. This is good for henchmen or horror villains, like darth maul and jason vorhees, but for a main villain i personally prefer someone with motivation and the ability to have a conversation with the protagonist. And you can very well use the text to be scary, like when he says "pick it up" or when talks down on puss in boots, making him feel powerless. That's what i think, at least
@@monarchvoid he actually beat you to it is the crazy part, cause. Asshole would say hypothetically cause that comes right after theoretically in sciences.
Honestly he’s the best villain to appear in a movie like this in awhile. I wish he would’ve had a bit more screen presence but hey maybe that’s part of what makes him a good and captivating villain.
No, now he's going to make a theory discussing how HE ISNT DEATH and that he was lying. I can almost guarantee this. I will give it a few weeks but I am willing to bet that matpat will try to debunk it being death for some reason despite him literally owning up to it and being proud of it.
This is a good villain. He's on screen for less than half the movie, and yet we, as the audience, never forget that he is the driving force for the entire film.
Just watched this movie tonight and I have to say out of all the villains in animated movies (and some non animated) that I’ve watched, this one takes the cake. Every time he came around not only did Puss get chills, but so did I. His stare really does make you feel like he’s looking into your soul. Dreamworks done an amazing job on this character, such an eerie feeling every time he showed up.
I mean, The Grim Reaper or an embodiment of Death has existed in most cultures regardless of the Horsemen. Pretty sure an example like Thanatos predates Revelations.
This dude is cool. And I don’t mean that metaphorically, or rhetorically, or poetically, or theoretically, or in any other fancy way, he’s cool, straight up.
