I AGREE!!! IT WAS NOT ONLY LOW-- BUT MUCH STRONGER AND CLEARER THAN I'VE EVER HEARD. Pre-3 packs a day! Lol!!! However, most of the low bass singers did smoke back in the 40s, 50s, 60s, an 70s cz it was a common belief that it gave them an edge in the low register. (But it was the demise of a lead or tenors career) And back then, they didn't know the damage it could do. (Tim Riley, George Younce, Rex Nelon, and I think big cheif smoked ALSO, but not sure about him.- I know George quit after his heart attack in 1988, and Tim Riley QUIT ALSO.
"PRECIOUS MEMORIES" was sang by the Blackwood bros. @ the closing of Glady's Presley's funeral in 1958 in Memphis at graveside. She was a member of their church & this was her FAVORITE SONG. It's written that when they started a young Elvis threw his self on her casket... 😔 "I'm redeemed", "Precious Lord take my hand" & "In the Garden" were also performed.
I found this record on eBay about ten years ago 2008. I first heard it in 1970 when my Dad and I were invited to our Pastor's house to hear it. My Dad got a copy of it on reel to reel, and I later copied it to cassette. I still have the tape. I hope to digitize it, and then burn it on CD one day.
If you listen very carefully when the Big Chief comes out and James says: "That's rather something, one bass singer congratualting another," you can hear the Big Chief say: "That was no congratualtions!" I wonder what he said to JD??!!!
They, the members of the quartets that night, knew this was being recorded Big Chief went out and said something to the effect that no one would understand him saying "Bless it's heart" because he thought the sound of baby crying wouldn't be picked up... He later found out they had microphones near the audience to pick up the applause so they were pretty sure the crying baby would be heard also. and it was.. a great album.
@@LeanoSamwinga No I don't... but since Hovie made comments and they may have sang with them (I have this album and would have to double check but I think they came out and sang with them on the last song)... there's a chance they had. Would have to do some digging to see if the Statesmen have a live album at this time. This was a great time for Southern Gospel Quartets... these were two of the best.
@@elwood1247 You're correct. I can here Rosie and Doy especially on Somebody Loves me. I recommend purchasing Jake Hess' book "Nothing But Fine". Has many photos.
