Sydney and Verity being his “made up” parents are two of the people at the bbc who created doctor who (there will be a film to watch prior to 50th anniversary a few seasons from now that is great to watch).

Love your appreciation for Harry Lloyd's creepiness in this episode. He's such a fantastic villain and this is my favourite role I've seen him in (though he's great in everything; he's also Viserys Targaryen in Game of Thrones and voices Viktor in Arcane). The facial expressions, the cadence in his voice, his general demeanour, it's all so unsettlingly alien, like he manages to be in the uncanny valley just with the way he acts.

I love this two-parter, it really delves into questions on personality and identity, with some great acting particularly from Tennant and Jessica Hynes. Looking forward to your reaction to part two!

13:39 the doctor mentions his father Sydney and mother Verity - honouring Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert the original producers of doctor who back in the 1960s.

This is one of the instant classics of the Tennant era. He's wonderful in this story. It's actually adapted from a Doctor Who novel in the 90s featuring the Seventh Doctor, just switched for the Tenth Doctor and I feel like both versions work really well, but I really like it with a post-Time War Doctor. Having him teaching kids who the story points out will be going to war very, very soon, and being so non-Doctor about it hits so much harder with Ten than Seven.

among the images in "John Smith's" journal are drawings of some of the doctor's past faces, including the 8th doctor from the American Tv Movie. This marks the first time his face has appeared in a episode of the show.

This story really highlights Martha as the reason why she's my absolute favourite companion. These two episodes really show how strong and capable she is and i don't think many other people could have coped in her shoes.

In the novel “Human Nature,” from which this 2 parter is from (and written for TV by the novel’s author, Paul Cornell), the Doctor’s essence was placed inside a cricket ball. No doubt in the novel that was a call back to the fifth Doctor’s passion for cricket but it also works here visually for Who fans who remember Doctor No. 5

This duo is my fav/one of my faves in all of doc who. And starts the beginning of the peak of the whoniverse. Some bloody excellent acting in these episodes. Both actors playing Baines and Latimer go on to play characters in game of thrones. Latimer is also in queens gambit and a few other things, Baines is an actual descendant of Charles Dickens.

Corporal punishment only stopped in UK schools in 1986. Both my schools used it, the cane in England, and the belt in Scotland. It was absolutely useless, it was a mark of toughness to be caned or belted.

David Tennant is brilliant! That chameleon arch scene was well done. I actually met Tennant in Richmond at GalaxyCon in 2023. He was skinnier than he looked during his time on D.W

New hair rocks, by the way! This one is easily one of the best two-parters since Who got rebooted. You may also spot Harry Lloyd (aka Viserys Targaryen, third of his name, from GoT) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster from Love Actually, Maze Runner and Nanny McPhee

Harry Lloyd is great at playing weirdly intense assholes. Not long after playing Baines, he went on to play Viserys Targaryen in the first season of Game of Thrones.

Trivia fun time, The actor who played Tim (the boy you recognised) is Thomas Brodie-Sangster, he's one of those actors that turns up in a lot of stuff but very few people know his actual name. He was in Love Actually, Nanny McPhee and Maze Runner to name a few, he's also an accomplished voice actor, best known for playing Ferb in Phineas and Ferb. This two parter was also based on a book, but I'll say more about that next episode.

My favorite part of this 2-parter is the end of part 2. The kid with the pocket watch was in the Maze Runner trilogy. The young man who's taken with the one-sided smirk is in the movie The Theory of Everything (2014).

The next 3 greats of 3 back to back episodes. Lot of interesting concepts in this two parter for a historical one. Martha proves herself a lot despite the time period. The possibilities the Doctor overlooked. The watch. It's so well made. Probably not perfect but good enough. Yeah 1913/World War 1, yep they do experience it. But Martha proves herself so well besides the troubling time. Not seen the Supernatural episode but I think I've heard of it. But good theories. Ah thr stories and 1 heart and all that. Oh this is so good. Love this episode. Yeah a fair cover story that kind of works. Martha is in on it and watching over him to hide the Doctor. She plans to leave when the time is right. Ah yes searching for beer and come across an alien space ship not an airplane, ah concepts understood of 1913. Sniffing just like Slatheen have their gas quirks. Yeah a time lord watch thats hmm a very particular conversion. Ah yes Scarecrows...... It's very safe but still scary just enough. War prep. A future scenario. Sigh dealing with things back then. Then again you can smack these days. Ah 1914 future, a piano to carry, they can't get them up the stairs so they use topes, pianos were entertainment. What a good throw and get a dance invite. XD Ah the Doctor's life made up. Him getting closer to her. Ah if only she was a Sletheen. Yep, too much romance sometimes in this show. Ah the family. Standing mean the therapist (Tender Loving Care the DVD/PC game) and walking scary in Human Nature, anything is possible. I find that while we never see their original form episodes like this with not seeing we get either good or bad episodes. Ah Martha being aware of people changing. Cultural differences sigh you know her well you human Doctor. Its a fair joke/explanation but even still. Very silly and sad. Tim seeing modern London for a bit there with Martha running past. You can tell with some actors how unnerving they can be with reaction shots. XD Intentional or not. Yeah possessrd scarecrows. Ah her overhearing. Yep disintegration gun I guess or tuen to ash. Panic. Simple thick and dull I mean it applies to some even if alien/non human logic. Oh no tune in next time. XD Yep hmm I don't remember the wording being that way with the friend and lover I remember it being Matrine as lover and Martha friend. Yeah I know Tim's actor in other things I think. Oh he plays Furb that actor huh interesting for how rare he talks too.

have to say this one and the next episode are probably 2 of my Favourite episodes of all of them as are the rest of this series. the names the doctor gives for his parents are imp[ortant to doctor who but also BBC production overalll sydney newman was a former producer at ABC who left to fill the role at the BBC who created the general premise of doctor who and hired verity lambert who would produce it becomming both the youngest Drama producer at the time as well as the first woman and untill this episode the only woman to have a credited producer credit

As this show was aimed at children during the classic Who era, viewers never saw the Doctor kiss anyone on screen. I suppose that, with some of his companions, it could have happened, but it was never shown.

I loved David Tennant as The Doctor (and loved to hate him as Kilgrave in Jessica Jones) before this episode but his performance as John Smith in this two parter increased my appreciation for him ten fold and now he’s one of my favorite actors. Highly recommend checking him out in Jessica Jones, Broadchurch and Good Omens as well if you haven’t seen him in those (you’ve already seen him in Star Wars as Huyang)

100% agree. It's painful to see Martha being disrespected like that. But it would be insulting to pretend that that isn't exactly how it was for people on the 1910s.
