From the ancient Japanese collection of folktales, stories and legends compiled in the Heian/Kamakura period, written in Classical Japanese, the Konjaku Monogatari Shu, Scroll 25 Story 7 今昔物語集巻25第7話 Music: oto-no-sono.com
Yasumasa sounds like King from One Punch Man, but isn't just bluffing, and Mr. Droopy pants sounds like a monster that would attack him. This type of story of a villian trying to attack someone only to second guess themselves and backing out is very common, guess its ancient even.
You know, one of the reasons I started doing this was to find the origins of common tropes that show up in anime and games. You making that connection to One Punch Man is brilliant and I had never even considered it until now. Thank you, friend.
Fujiwara no Yasumasa is also in the Shuten Douji story as sort of the third (sixth?) wheel of Minamoto no Raikou's group. I also recall that the historical Yasumasa had a frued with one of Raikou's younger brothers which resulted in the death of one of Yasumasa's retainers, who was in fact the brother of the famous Sei Shōnagon! I've also seen it offhandedly mentioned in a few sources that this Hakamatare character might be the same as the Kidōmaru character in another Raikou tale but I don't quite know where that idea comes from. Oh and that Hakamatare might infact refer to Fujiwara no Yasumasa's younger brother.
@@animekid9000 That's an extensive knowledge of the court of this time. Color me envious. Though it's interesting that you point that out as this story follows immediately after the story about Raikou and I've noticed that, whoever compiled these stories very loosely grouped related stories together.
I fully expected the Fujiwara character to be some oni, tengu, tanuki, kitsune, bakeneko - a yokai or other supernatural being trying to lure a victim to its death. Or to a drastic prank 😅😹 ! After all, what the nobleman did in a dangerous area at midnight in precious clothes, PLAYING A FLUTE! has every hallmark of a trap. Luckily, Hakama got of easy and so did Fujiwara! Greetings and have a great week!
@@TalesofDawnandDusk - I think so, too. It wouldn't be the first Japanese story of that kind, highlighting positive traits, in this case wisdom, authority and kindness.
@@saymyname2417 Negstive. Taira no Masakado is the guy who raised one of the biggest rebellions against the Heian court and crowned himself the "New Emperor."
@@TalesofDawnandDusk - Yes, and that's why Masakado is my favourite! But I thought he had a daughter, Satsuki / Takiyasha hime who (according to legends) dabbled in magic to summon a massive toad spirit, a yokai army and a ginormous skeleton set together of fallen warriors to avenge her father's death. I guess she needed to fail because..., we'll historical accuracy. If it wasn't for that she'd be Aegon the conquerer 🤣 ! But I may have confused the names. And there were quite a lot of Yamato (wo)men on a mission 😁 .
