What if you committed an offense and served your time in prison - now what? Unfortunately, there are enormous challenges to re-entry. One of the hardest is finding a job. The vast majority of employers won’t even let a convicted felon apply. Parole requires a steady residence, but affordable housing requires background checks. There's a catch-22 at every turn.
It’s no wonder that approximately two thirds of prisoners are projected to be rearrested within the first three years of release. This vicious cycle makes our community less safe, greatly affects children of incarcerated parents, and gives a life sentence to men and women who’s sentence is already over.
Second Chance Citizens illustrates that this doesn’t have to be the case. It’s a success story of a man who re-enters society and supports his family due to an employer giving him a chance. This story can be re-created. This can happen all over America. We want to share his story with you. Do you believe in second chances?

People change, often completely, over the course of their lives. Everybody deserves a second, third, even a fourth chance. Don't keep people locked up for the rest of their lives just because they were once incarcerated.

It's not easy on the families on Convicts either. My father is a convicted murderer, and I am a jr. I was actually asked in a few interviews in the 80's and 90's if we were related when I was a teenager applying everywhere I could for a job, I had to move half a state away for a damn chance. If you don't want your family to have to go through the same discrimination, that is another reason to stay out.

I LOVE this! We MUST revolutionize our prison/criminal system. We must focus on rehabilitating individuals physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. And we must look at why so many men of color seemingly have no choices other than crime. We don't offer education. We don't offer opportunities beyond the military. It is a societal problem. And this imbalance must be addressed, and our population healed. It's not about "them". They are "US".

This is an excellent film and confirms what we see as huge roadblocks for the formerly incarcerated. More companies need to give people a chance....every felon isn't a hardened criminal and the fact they are a felon shouldn't define them! Thank you Goodwill for giving people a chance to rebuild their shattered lives. ~Charlene/OPEN ARMS helping women with reentry after incarceration

I just happened across this video and it's not for me but I greatly enjoyed it. It made me happy that someone could make life better for themselves and their families. I wish that place would hire disabled military that served his country I got hurt early on and end up disabled. This world doesn't want to hire disabled veteran people at all either. It's very sad and heartbreaking because I've met a lot of ex-cons that wants to change their lives and make their life better. I met some that didn't want to as well. That's heartbreaking we are all people and we all make mistakes. Everyone has done something wrong in their lives.

I've worked in Law Enforcement and Law Enforcement related jobs for the last 36 years. I've known many parolees on a personal level, many through Church or actual relatives that I've known since birth. Prisons quite often put a young Man in a situation where he gets "hard" or "strong" real quick or else. So, now you have a young Man who has been in a get tough or die situation for a couple of years and in there virtually ALL he has is "respect". Well, "respect" in prison is a powerful word. A Man will fight and fight HARD if he is "disrespected" in Jail or Prison Environment. The hardest lesson I have tried to get into any Parolee's head is that in the American workplace you WILL get disrespected almost daily by some kid who is in charge of you. Maybe it is just a shift manager at a fast food place but he WILL quite possibly "disrespect" you regularly to get you to do menial tasks. If you punch him you go back to jail and of course, lose your job. So you find yourself repeatedly back to Square One if you can't shake the Prison Attitude. Working at the bottom end at the most menial jobs is where a teen or a parolee must start his working career and "eating shit" is universal. If I could get one of my Parolees to accept this FACT he might do alright, but many just can't do it. Let's try to Respect Labor, no matter how menial it is. All Labor is "good" Labor if you are a Parolee or ex-felon. I know, because I've seen it for the last 3 decades...

The stigma that is the poison. Where felons want to make a difference, but as far as the people hiring they only see a felon as unworthy or just a person who can't change. How the hell is that going to fix anything, there simply making people homeless cause they either have nowhere to go or no money for a place to live. to make matters worse, many felons might be forced to go to crime or go back to crime, cause if no one hires them how are they gonna eat, get new cloths and shoes and other things and other things. I even heard a few stories where some people who got out of jail, but relized that they can't function or work anything thing just choose to kill themselves cause they don't want to go back to prison or be on the streets. It goes to show that the system isn't one to care or be helpful to those who need it.

I have seen that help many, but i personally find it easy to connect with that force which men have called "God," without professing my existence to a specific religion. All religions state clearly that the essence of God is Love, and that God is within all beings, and wants us to share our Love, Light, and Beauty with one another. The basic principles of Living Humbly, Helping those in need, being a Good and Kind person, these lessons are comoletely universal to all beings. This resonates with my soul, much moreso than the capitulation, guilt and self-hatred of basic human aspects found in so many so-called God-fearing religions. Love is what i choose to believe in and, in my experience, some of the best humans of my life have been those who transcend the chains of negativity within their religion and fully embrace the Love within themselves, instead, religious or not. Point is, you dont have to subscribe to a particular religion to know the message of Godliness. "The deepest part to being Black, is being African. The deepest part to being African, is being human. The deepest part of being Human... is being Love, Kindness, Compassion, Empathy, all that good stuff... The deepest part to being Love, is being GOD. so what would you rather be, [Race, creed, etc.], or GOD?" -- KRS ONE

While I think it's totally wrong to deny Public Housing, and College Loans, as well as low-end jobs, I still see a need for screening. There's one thing that's not mentioned: We make our own choices in life, and there's consequences for those actions. But that does not excuse the state from the responsibility of trying to provide some help in employment.

The Real Flenuan We've been doing that for pretty much all my lifetime. How's that working out? Terribly. Change requires participation. Okay, that's actually an understatement. Participation is mandatory. How did we end up with a minimum wage law? How did women get the right to vote? Because people were willing to risk life and limb fighting the system. And it's completely worth the effort. If you don't like the news, you can change the channel. But that really won't change anything.

No, YOU make your own way. If you need God to justify your actions or deal with the real world that’s fine, but God has nothing to do with what happens to you whether it’s good or bad. People make their own destiny; God is just a human construct used by the naïve or weak to keep them from going into despair. I’m not knocking your religion or your beliefs, but don’t give God credit when people are responsible for their own change

Yet another reason there should be a basic income for everyone. I don't care how butthurt you are about someone wanting you to give up a few bucks. It's extremely necessary. In a country where a mistake you made at age 14 can ruin your life there needs to be a net for everyone to fall back on. You included. You don't think you'll ever be arrested because you don't commit crimes? Well, let's see. How many people have we put on death row who have been proven innocent? And how many people has The Innocence Project helped? Yeah. It can happen to you. Even if you're white. Don't think you're immune because you're the majority. It helps for sure but I have a few horror stories I could tell you. A good friend of mine helps run a legal aid society in Vegas. It's definitely a racial thing but it's not 100%. It probably won't happen if you're white but it still damn well could. Until we can get people to wake up to the fact that people can and do change for the better we need some kind of safety net. I don't care if someone is a serial killer or rapist, they should still get that cash. Because that's what it has to mean when we talk about "everyone." Even someone who's committed horrible crimes needs to have a way out. Because without that how the hell are we going to expect them to be civil members of society? This needs to happen. I'm not an idiot, I know it won't. But it damn well should.
