I still have a few more holiday hand-embellished goodies in the store! www.etsy.com/shop/EmilyArtfulOriginals Get some Emily Artful Merch Today! crowdmade.com/collections/emilyartful I realized I didn't explain that I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area and that is why I'm so bitter about the tech takeover. I still have respect for overall technological growth on a larger scale, but the takeover displaced so many wonderful people and small businesses that it put me off to that whole world. Also, I get a lot of comments about my hands/fingernails being white/purple/blue. I have Raynaud's Syndrome and that causes the blood flow to my outer extremities to be poor. It's currently cold as balls (cold balls?) where I live so that plays a role, but also I consume a fair amount of caffeine and that triggers it as well! So don't worry, I'm not dying, I just have shite blood vessels!

As an art History student is say this man’s assessment about women in arts is super incorrect. Artemisia Gentileschi is one of the very important Italian artists of Baroque and she definitely had a daughter if not more kids. Le Brun had kids. Frida Kahlo wanted to have kids, just couldn’t. Yayoi Kusama has a son. Louise Bourgeois, Berthe Morisot, de Lempicka, and many more, had kids. And wow, some women artists opt to not have kids. But I’d say the ratio is closer to 50/50. The reason why people hear less about female artists? Most people used to learn the most about art through school, and curriculums, usually made by men, heavily favoured men. Yes, the art world is incredibly patriarchal (and much like this tech bro, disguises as woke). But that never stopped women from excelling in art and selling art. There’s a lot to be said about women historically operating more from home and selling to closer communities more than man. But that could be a dissertation topic and I don’t wanna throw out some half baked claims lol

According to a recent exhibit I saw of Louise Nevelson, some critic admitted that he nearly made the mistake of praising her work, but "discovered just in time" that it was made by a woman, thus saving him the embarrassment. The misogyny is disgusting. One way to make sure we don't make progress is to not try at all.

Really any branch of visual arts. If the naysayers actually stopped running their mouths long enough to observe the massive amount of their environment that’s been made by an artist, from logos to textile patterns to video games to book illustrations to thousands of other important things people take for granted as things that will automatically be there because reasons, artist would get so much more respect.

It took me until fairly recently to realize this, I had been so ingrained with the idea of the "starving artist." I was always told that art is only a viable career path if you're willing to suffer for it, and only if you're insanely and innately talented at it. In reality, art is fucking EVERYWHERE and it's not even that hard to find a full-time, stable position in graphic design or some other artistic field. Hell, even my work in software configuration has an artistic bent to it, since a significant part of my job is to make the end product look aesthetically pleasing to our clients. Without me, my team would be working with our marketing team a lot more, because customer-facing stuff needs to look good.

My daughter, who is a video game artist, put up with a smug start-up bro for almost three years until she finally had enough of his gaslighting and quit. But she still collected a percentage of royalties on the game because it was her art. He texts her 6 months later saying that he was cutting the agreed upon royalty from 5% to .5% or she could sell the rights for $2500, because the artwork was suddenly, “not good enough.” I told her to send back a text, “I’ll have to run it by my attorney.” Obviously not the answer he wanted to hear. Because he expected her to roll over and do what he wanted. After many ranting texts, pleading texts, all sorts of manipulation, she finally sold her rights for significantly more. And she learned a valuable lesson about smug, start-up bros: when you start your ground, or threaten them back, they will eventually fold.

This is common in the art world, not just the because you’re a woman thing but the entirety of “you’ll never be an artist” stuff. This currently, right now, strangles many kids who make an artwork, see that it isn’t realistic, and then have a teacher or some other individual tell them that they are bad which makes said child grow up never having learned how to draw and having a massive internal roadblock in the way of them learning to create art.

If we're talking statistically, Arnold was probably in a worse position to advance his career, and I find that hilarious. The entire (financial) point of social media is for as many users as possible to be on the site for as long as possible in a day, and I'm going to say MOST people have a passing interest in art. On the other hand, only so many platforms are going to preform well, and that means only so many IT personnel is going to be required at a given time to keep those select platforms operational. Millions of potential customers out there for an artist on social media, increasingly poorer pay and more cut-throat professionals willing to do it all and more just get their foot in Google's door... Just looking at it realistically, he really should have a back up plan outside of IT work if he really wants to advance his lot in life and not get stuck in a no-name, no-pay position. This is really eye opening bc i can tell when ppl have talked to ME that way about being a musician, and i didnt consider how condescending it was until now. Like, its infuriating and when it gets to you it sticks for way too long. I'm realizing now that the guy I was talking to most recently was actually a startup bro. He literally told me he was from California and worked in IT...

I think what keeps me from picking up on it right away is that I don't sense any malicious intent. Because there isn't any meant, they just think they're smarter and better than me. You don't need malice to step on people. These people's ideas of what success even is is just so small-minded. And honestly, that's understandable for a lot of men because of the pressure that's placed on that gender role. Men are traditionally expected to support an entire family on a single income, which profoundly impacts the careers they choose. It definitely did for my older brother. But we don't live in an age of single income households anymore. If I get married and have kids, I'm not worried about my job being able to pay all the bills And put food on the table. I'll be providing *part* of that, not all.

god it reminds me of a time when some sophomore bio major girl in my writing in the arts class talked down on me because I was a sociology major. At the time, I was getting lunch outside of the university and she was with three other freshmen and she introduced me to them (because I was a senior at that point) and when they asked about my major I said sociology and she deadass said "yeah she's never going to make a dime in her life haha" and honestly I was too shocked to say anything. I was happy the other two were like "hey thats not cool" and she tried to play it off as a joke but like damn that was so uncalled for. Either way she found out later I knew how to paint/draw because our writing class was based around art and when I presented my artwork she was like "you should draw me something" and I remember saying "haha yeah no" and never talking to her again lmao.

Once I showed my grandma a painting of Shoto Todoroki and she asked me how did I do it. I told her I used the carbon method and when I explained it she said “don’t you think that’s cheating?” I said “no may artists use this technique and also I just used the sketch I still painted it with my hand” then she said “that’s still cheating” This is one of the few incidents with my grandma and she caused me to have a bunch of insecurities about myself but just to shorten the story this is one of the incidents Oh also she can’t even draw a stick figure to save her life

I have a similar story: I forget what the initial conversation, but we were talking to someone about finances? Or careers? Idk, but his wife gave "unsolicited advice" and tried to look for jobs for us at one place by texting a friend of hers. When that friend said, "idk if we have any positions open" she sent the screenshot of that conversation to my husband and added, "you guys chose the worst majors." (I am a costumer and he is a pianist.) Another time during grad school interviews, I was given a lot of comments along the lines of "you have no idea what you're doing" and "we're only looking for people who are serious about this" Boy, I was discouraged initially, but those kinds of comments really fire me up now. Oh yeah? Here I am laughing from my chair at my full-time job as a costumer.

i find it interesting that those kinds of people always care more about productivity, salary, and success more than the job itself. it’s not a bad thing to want to be successful or live comfortably or be recognized for the work you do, but a lot of these guys see their lives as a numbers game. to me, if i can live with less wealth or popularity doing what makes me happy, that is what i should be doing. money is important, and financial stability is important, but i find a lot of this crowd forget it all means nothing if they aren’t content. it’s not “wasted potential” for someone to choose a low paying creative career over a high paying job right out of a 4 year college. not all jobs are for everyone, and everyone has different wants and needs. it’s weird that so many people assign their value or worth to how much they contribute to the economy. this ideology was something i grew up with, but i started to realize what makes me valuable can’t be measured. don’t let anybody force you to lead a life you don’t want, you have the right to be happy doing what you love :)
