Capitalism pretty much guarantees they will make everything just good enough to be acceptable as to maximize profits. Like office space - work just enough not to get fired. Try convincing stock holders that spending a bunch of money just in case of a emergency that might not ever happen is a good idea. This is the whole point of regulations - to force them to do what is in our best interest but still allowing Capitalism to do its thing. Of course lobbyists fight like crazy to convince people that de-regulation is good for business, more like good for profits and bad for us and these kinds of situations are what result. Spending money to winterize just in case is jobs/labor to install that stuff even.
One thing I find necessary to have in case of an emergency is my "Gotta Go Bag." I keep it in my closet by the front door. It's a cloth grocery bag and In it are all my meds, a change of socks and underwear, personal care needs such as toothbrush and paste, batteries and a charger for my cell phone. I can grab it and run or, get the E.R. people to put it on my gurney as they take me out the door to go to the hospital. I take it out every week when I need to refill my weekly pill dispenser. It really comes in handy if you only have seconds to get out of your home. (I keep it light weight and compact so the paramedics won't hesitate to put on the gurney on the way out the door.) I have a second "Emergency Bag" in the same closet by the front door, and it contains things like a windup flashlight/radio, blanket etc. So, if I had to vacate my house in a hurry due to a fire or whatever, I grab 2 bags and I'm gone. (Also, in the second bag is a memory stick with copies of all the important family pictures etc.)
That's something that is always on the to do list, for me and my mom too. I have one but not 2. I keep getting after my mom to get one set up, but I don't think she has it yet. I don't live near her, so I can't do it for her. But it's a great thing to have. I have one in my car and my apartment. This is so scary. We aren't ready for what's coming. All of us. Or most of us anyway......

Traveling in the USA as an educated foreigner is an absolute culture shock in terms of environmental protection! Nowhere in the world you see more inconsideration and ignorance: Everywhere plastic cutlery and plastic cups are used, there is no deposit and no waste separation, they use plastic bags instead of cotton and drive the fattest gas guzzlers, electricity is also consumed massively and the environmental damage caused by air conditioning there also no one is interested! Americans live like nobody else at the expense of the environment! And this although so many believe in it that the earth is God's creation. Wind Mills shut down reducing the power intake of the grid by 10-30%. Heating demand keeps increasing leading to overdrawing. There is mismatch in demand and supply and when it reaches a critical point, system automatically shuts down to avoid damage to equipment. ALl modern grids have such controls. Once the grid shuts down, boilers in gas and coal fired plants shut down. Water inside the boilers and pipes freezes. There is no water to send down the pipes in gas fired plants. And now these power plants also become useless. Therefore democrats are correct in saying that more coal/gas fired capacity has come off grid. But the trigger for the whole process is wind farms. If they had not shut down this whole blackout would have not triggered. Democrats caused this.

Yikes... Didn't know it was quite that bad. We went through a couple days where our heat and water went out, but I live in MN. We have emergency heaters and a week's worth of emergency rations on hand. Kind of crazy that we're doing better in -20⁰ weather than others in 30⁰. Hope things get better.
As a Texan who didnt have power from monday at 3am to who knows how long that experienced this and now we have no running water? Like the higher ups in the state officials didn't do a good job on this AT ALL. Like this is a mess and we deserve better.
I am so sorry for you. I have had a pipe freeze and break but it was so cold the water stayed frozen Hey man, like Moses said, " its time pack up your camel and go". I would not put up with a third world country infrastructure, no running water, no electric power.
The reason for alot of people having no power is that the Windmills froze because they were made out of a material that wasn't cold proof, as a Canadian, our windmills are graded to keep functioning in -60 degree Celsius temperatures, Texas' windmills are not. It's the same issue with the water, the pipes in Texas cannot function in cold temperatures so they froze, pipes in Canada can sustain very cold temperature and keep working. It's a huge infrastructure failure. I pray for everyone to stay safe and hang on in Texas. If you are cold, put on thick clothing, jackets if you have and use socks as mittens, eat things even if it's cold, you digesting will create more body heat. Put food in snow to keep the food from going bad. Amen.
Apparently the power bill may also be astronomical if the resident selected the variable rate plan. It was $9000 per Megawatt during some parts of the storm. Hopefully the power company will make adjustments so the bill is a reasonable amount.

The name of the game to prevent these types of problems or at least minomize them, is to have tight regulations on utilities grid operators and so forth. And enforce that regulation tightly. The vulnerabilities in the system was clearly laid out in report dating as far back as 2011, but as the state simply didnt care to do anything grid iperators simply didnt care. I live in Texas. It was a hell of a lot colder in North Texas than it was in Houston. What suffering are referring to? Three to four days of discomfort isn't 400 years of slavery. Not been able take a bath for three days is a discomfort, getting your ass whipped working for the man for free is suffering.
I can tell y’all right now, as a Texan, HIS experience is NOT the experience of every Texan. My community has stepped up. Neighbors are looking out for neighbors. Perfect strangers have opened their homes up to give others a warm place to sleep. Churches and local business that are still on the verge of collapse because of the lockdowns, have opened up as warming stations. There are even places for those with pets! Those of us that still have power are letting people charge gadgets. We are feeding those in need. People are sharing vehicles and running errands for those unable to get out there. Neighbors are sharing whatever they’re able. A lot of us live on acreages and have plenty of firewood to spare. Neighbors are leaving supplies on their doorsteps for anyone in need, clothing, blankets, pet food, water, canned goods...it’s been a blessing to see. All is not lost. I wish they’d report this side of things. It’s amazing to think, the businesses that are helping out are the same ones nearly killed because of the lockdowns while places like Walmart have flourished and I don’t recall Walmart opening their doors and giving away free provisions...

5 years ago, i was really contemplating on moving to texas for cheap taxes and BIG affordable houses. Now i see all the big and beautiful infrastructure is a front, and behind is utter frailty to mother nature.
Black's appearances in the media today have been inspiring, and a wonderful example of what young people are capable of. His empathy should be applauded, and should be used as the first example of how to help your neighbor. Keep it up, man. Bless you.

Why not cut off the main valves in the house instead of taking pictures ... shutting off the water totally would have helped I know from pipes bursting in my house ... after all this mess is over the people of Texas will forget and vote those same republicans that don’t give a crap about them back in office... it happened in 2011 so🙄🙄

@@brucecampbell4528 they have magic wind turbines in Antarctica that don't freeze up. They also have plumbing that doesn't burst. They're wicked smart over there. I hear Texas has more trouble than just with the 10 percent electricity from wind, but also their fossil fuel based power, which is the vast majority, is failing to. They just didn't expect the climate to change so much, cause it's a hoax.
I live in a "third world" country and we have free education, health care and extremely cheaper water and electricity that we have most of the time. (Water goes now and then... Poor infrastructure here too)
As a Canadian, this is quite baffling. We're always complaining about too much salt on the roads, not losing power. We have 6ft of snow on our lawns but every business remains fully functional. Privatized power is really fucked up.

My dad and I had a conversation where the Temperature will get colder and colder where now we will probably be in a new Ice Age. How is that Global Warming exactly?!
@@connorrigdon9710 Ice melts and too much fresh water. Slows the warm currents. Weaker warm currents produces a weaker jet stream (hot air, cold air from arctic). So the cold arctic are able to travel further down south than it normally does.
@@connorrigdon9710 Well it goes something like this. More CO2 lowers the ability of the planet to cool off ,Average global temperatures rise. But the pole get warmer faster than the equator. The jet stream is a circumpolar wind which separates the polar Hadley cell from the Ferrel Hadley cell which are the main climate bands. As the poles get warmer the temperature difference driving the jet stream decreases and the wind loses its driving force. Then it starts to wander so that you can find yourself deep in the Arctic Hadley cell enjoying some proper Arctic Weather or Deep in the Ferrel Cell with heatwave's and such. The main effect is instability and potentially wild weather systems. The jet stream has began to wander a LOT over the past few years so time to Buckle up for the ride :)

I can’t imagine having to live like this. As a NY’er I’ve dealt with snow storms in the past but nothing like this. I’m praying for my neighbors in Texas. I just moved from Long Island to California to get away from the cold/snow. Where can donations be sent that will directly be used for the citizens for food or toiletries?

Its our money to begin with - if our people need food, shelter, healthcare, water, or any other basic necessity of life, then our people should be first to get it. The government literally is there for the sole purpose of helping its citizens. Secondly, more of our taxes go to helping ensure the wealthiest (who hoard most of our capital, leaving the major population with only a tiny percentage) don't pay their fair share of taxes. And then they pay for laws so they don't have to be a part of our society - the rich break our country's social contract and you buy into it. But how do those rich people boots taste?

@@connorrigdon9710 I had the same question about how this is related to global warming if at all. I looked it up and it’s about the warming of the Arctic causing the cold air from its polar vortex to move out of place. I recommend looking it up, I’m probably not explaining it well

Yeah we invest a lot more into our power infrastructure, we bury a lot of our distribution network, there's many mitigations before consumers loose power, and certainly you wouldn't expect a sustained loss of power until pipework freezes and we have a lot of wind power now too :)
My 74 year old mom lives just east of McKinney Texas and had no power for over 80 hours. The hotels were price gouging. Charging $500-$600 a night for rooms that are always $50-100 a night. The only food source was 7-11 hotdogs for over 80 hours. She had to go out to her truck every couple hours just to get warm. Texas government has failed. Greg Abbot said on national TV that Texans would rather die than to have the electrical companies regulated. As a Texan I say BULL CRAP. I have electric bills proving how bad electricity is priced and handled since and because of deregulation. I’m sick of Republican leaders in Texas lying and cheating. Texans are fed up. They are only speaking out now because those leaders are now screwing them over during a crisis. Also, the day Anne Richards left the governor’s office many years ago and the Republican Party took over the state, we as Texans have been at the mercy of the pockets of those like George Bush Jr, Rick Perry, and Greg Abbott. This state needs saving from itself. Regular Texans need saving from the red Republican Party that are more like the Russian government.

@@OneAdam12Adam actually it was found that the democrats in power in PR after Trump had sent supplies and such, hid most of the supplies including baby food and diapers in ware houses throughout the country. When the people there found out about it they stormed the warehouses and distributed the supplies. But I get it, its just easier to blame everything on Trump than deal with the truth. 🤷🏻
Being from someplace that gets pretty cold every year, I can say at least in the instance of cold, its easier to warm up than it is to cool down when your hot. Honestly would prefer power out in the cold than in the heat.

Not just homeless when the power was off we had no heat and nearly were freezing to death. But now’s no better because our pipes busted and we have no water. Can’t even flush the toilets or brush our teeth cuz when we went to the grocery store all the water was sold out.
Yeah and not just the homeless. An 11 year old boy died in his bed from hyperthermia. They'll be more, but the real numbers probably won't be reported.
I'm from north Houston. We got hit hard but not as bad as some other areas. My family got lucky but millions are still without power and water. Stores have people lined up for hours waiting to pick remnants off the shelves. Everything is being rationed. All the staple items are gone and good luck finding toilet paper or bottled water. People are out here filling buckets at gas stations to boil to drink. They're melting snow and ice to flush toilets. This is what happens when state and local leaders don't listen. This is what happens when things run on a for-profit basis that lines their pockets. This is what happens when things are built on the cheap. We have a senator that flew to Mexico to ride out the storm and a governor that has his head so far up his own ass he'll never see daylight again. Our infrastructure has been in desperate need of prepairs and refurbishment for DECADES.
