its crazy the amount of respect other athletes have for Pastrana because like Deegan said he really went so far against the grain in a time where people were following it but still curious of the "what if" and he help breed a whole new generation of multi sport athletes.
I really don't think Travis ever tried to play a role or put on an act. His personality and demeanor has not changed since he first arrived on the scene. Some people really are that nice all the time.
Agree 100% and Deegan saying the militia rubbed off on him lol total bs, he never claimed not to party he just didn't buy into that rock n roll lifestyle. If you live in Maryland and come from a big marine family, you're a drinker no question about it.
most people just looked at deegan as sort of a insecure a hole tho. i guess some people obviously thought he was a cool kid. but i feel like most realized what it was.
@@TheWickedRuts but he didn’t do it for the money, he had more fun going out and doing dumb stuff, he hated racing, he hated going to “work” everyday. He wanted to have fun on his dirt bike.
He loved racing, still to this day he says he misses it. He was just too busted up to maintain it for a season, he put in the work don't get it twisted. Seperating his spine from his pelvis and his last concussion at Millville is what ended his career and he was still on 125's. He had blown out knees, mono, ebstein bar, anemic all at the same time while his parents were divorcing and all his sponsors kept pressing him to go one way or the other but not both, it was either racing or freestyle. Freestyle was tbe best choice for him, he stayed healthier riding freestyle. Injuries are much more common in racing, I did both. The difference is when something goes wrong in fmx, especially with flip tricks, it goes really wrong but it's far in-between, flips become routine thanks to foam pits, it's all muscle memory and the ramps are the same every time unlike dirt. With racing the speeds and technicality makes the likely hood of hitting the deck so much higher than freestyle, look at supercross, nearly half the field every year gets taken out. He made money, progressed the sport and got to get his fix of racing with a cage doing rally, which he was one of youngest American rally championship winners in history, then speed and style for awhile. It was just the perfect fit for him and where he was at in life. He's still arguably the most famous rider, I know people who know nothing of supercross or freestyle and they know who TP is but have no idea who James Stewart or RC is.
@@TheWickedRuts He didn't just get handed a bag. There is no signed contract at the beginning and they dont even have teams. He had to go out there and be the gnarliest dude on a bike to earn that money. Regardless of the money, he would had done FMX for free that's how much he loves the sport.
I was always disappointed as a fan as I felt racing was the pinnacle of the sport and freestyle was a sideshow. But I nonetheless respected his decision to do what he wanted to do and of course it all worked out for him so kudos.
I would say Shaun Palmer was the first multi alternative sports athlete. I remember getting into a fight with Shaun against the Malisha in a elevator in Vegas. We where being drunk idiots @ the SIA show. I remember the next day they made sure we where all good. Brian and Travis have done more for Dirt Biking than any one else in history. They are good people!!!!
I’ve personally met both of these guys a numerous amount of times and Travis Pastrana was always extra cool and went out of his way to show his appreciation
As a kid Deegan and Pastrana where heroes to so many of us! So happy to see them both still thriving in this industry! It would make me so insanely happy meeting both of them even at 22!
It's so awesome hearing this stuff 20 years later. I was 10-15 when all that was happening. I saw it exactly how it was, but being able to hear it from both of their perspectives, is just awesome. Thank you Gypsy, for making both of these videos happen.
Ive followed Deegan and Trav since they were BOTH kids, love seeing Deegan give Travis major props. Great seeing both guys doing great things all these years later.
I lived near Travis and he's such a cool dude he lets people come to his compound and ride and all kinds of shit. He's a LEGEND but he's just a regular dude that can double backflip a dirt bike. He's real down to earth.
Travis and I had the same motocross instructor as kids when I was 12 and he was 13. He's literally the nicest person I ever have met. I was lucky to share those times with him
Stuff like using a goon squad of mid 20’s drug addicts to go after a 14 year old? The guy is a piece of sh!t. He didn’t grow or learn, he did it again a year ago when he got called out for cheating with that factory engine. Went after another kid.
travis was the epitome of just doing what you love, no one ever seems to just acknowledge that he was good at something he wasnt enjoying anymore and went out and did things he did enjoy.. thats it.. brian was asking himself "he walked away from a factory ride, why?" it was because travis actually loved freestyle and actually didnt care too much about the money, he really just wanted to have fun on a dirt bike and thats what has always resonated with me is that the malisha had seen him coming over as taking their thing away from them but he didnt want to take anything away per say he just wanted to join in, the competitive side of freestyle and travis personally obviously means that yes he was there to win but he just wanted to have fun, like with all the crazy shit hes done in his life he just wants to be where hes excited. Travis is and always will be my Idol for that
@@beautocher2696 that’s absolutely right man. I really think without Travis freestyle would have died. What a legacy right.. but I to am right cuz in the beginning it was those hard core dicks.
@@jacobwhobrey1125 yeah isn’t that what they called it in the beginning. Pretty sure . But if you are younger you may not remember. But I am pretty sure it was . People didn’t no what it was but everyone new it was going to be huge.
Met deegan in crandon WI when he was racing his truck. Caught him riding around the pits on a 50cc mini bike. He was super humble and took a picture with us
Great to see the truth laid out, raw and real. And then once each of them realized the others long game, respect was paid to each other. Each one paved their own way, but could not have done it without each other's counter. Awesome stuff!
It's very cool listening to deegan shoot straight on Travis and give him some love nice to see respect between two important influences in the world of motocross and its derivatives sports
Most viewers are in the know so this probably doesn't need pointed out. But when *Deegan* says *Pastrana* possibly could've became a *"250"* champ. He's talking about the *Premium Class"* which is now the *450.* Because he had already won the *"Lites" 125 SX & MX* championships & if you listen *Pastrana* points out that his *125* championship bought his house which is *"Pastranaland"*
Literally the only you tube Chanel I’ll sit and watch adds thru .. keep up the great content man super cool to have an ozzy killing it with moto podcasts 🤙
Its nice their cool now or atleast respect eachother. They were young competitive guys that disliked eachother. Understandable. I like how they both matured and are now friends.
No, one was a mid 20’s drug addict, with a pack of mid 20’s degenerate drug addicts around him, one was 14 years old. The degenerate and his pack of degenerates attacked a child.
I grew up right in the middle of their ‘rivalry’ and loved both of them as a kid. Pastrana being the wonder boy pushing the sport and then Deegan being the mulisha badass riding shirtless with the spiked out chest protector, ripping burnouts at the top of the drop in ramp when everything was indoors. Good times. Deegan is such a likable dude and a great marketing brain too.
The riders that plan ahead for the day they aren't racing are the smart ones. The shelf life of a top racer is so short, the available rides, the injuries....Deegan is waaaaaay smarter, calculated than people give him credit for. Great interview.
@@GYPSYTALES I announced outdoor MX, wrote for Racer X for a few years and got to hang with all these guys at MX /SX as Johnny O'Hannah. It was a REAL eye opener seeing the business side of racing. Most casual fans have no idea.
always thought deegan was a bit of a tool. but hes a really intelligent bloke. new found respect for him as a person. always respected his bike capabilities
The reason the dislike, feud, good guy/bad guy dynamic, competitive pedigree, whatever you want to call it, between Deegan and Pastrana worked so well is because it was 100% real; there was no fake dynamic between these two. Everyone watching these two compete at the height of their careers knew it was real and that it why their dynamic sold so well. It was so much fun watching these two compete back in the early 2000’s.
Motocross will always be nostalgic to me. I remember being a kid and watching Stewart and playing reflex and alive and being into the MM with teenage angst. Smoking and riding and watching Twitch videos. The JLAW VS Dungey/Villopoto drama. I loved watching the lites battles between Barcia and Wilson and Hansen and Tickle. Makes me want to go back.
I lived the same way at 15 16 years old, plus i lived in lake elsinore which was around the area these guys all either came through or lived such good times
This brings me back.. freshman year of high school, all I wore were Metal Mulisha T-shirts.. and I spent so many hours playing Alive split-screen with my best friend. I was just a skinny, angry tween with dyed black hair and a hoody that was way too big. I'd forgotten about all of that. Now I'm 28 and work in a laboratory.
I watched a Travis Pastrana video a long time ago. It was sort of like an entertainment documentary from when he was a toddler to his racing then FMX days. Even as an adult, he has not changed. Ultra talented guy and deserves every bit of what he's got.
The thing is, is it was never an act. Travis is just a genuinely nice guy. Didn’t want to act like a tough guy. If he WASNT “goody to shoes” it would be an act then. Trav progressed the sport way faster than it would have without him
Travis is the Gnarliest dude in all of Free Style - When I saw him jump out of a Plane without a Parachute, I was like, WOW! - All of these other guys and just Pony's and Travis is the Stallion
Whether you were team deegan, pastrana- or both. Epic times and true rivalry in FMX. These dudes not only pioneered but were the peak of fmx as we know it!
Travis was so much better than Brian Deegan in supercross, motocross, and freestyle. He was better and did shit on an 80. And a clean cut kid kicking all of you tattooed and bad ass wannabes
I love watching the growth! Seeing Deegan grow from the young badass who was a hardass and now he's such a likeable good dad! Showing up for his kids is no easy task and he made their outlet their future! Fucking admire the guy! PROPS DEEGAN!!! Get some new footage with FAISST! You guys crack me up!!
@@barryshaw7304If you’re not from the US, don’t come here lol I will never understand the levels of whitening people shoot for😆Though Deegan probably has implants but still
Travis has always been on a greater level with everything he does and has been a gentleman throughout his career. Deegan has grown up, didn't like him much at first. Twitch was my favorite Mulisha rider. Great to see Deegan interact with his kids. Looks like a good pops
despite deegan being the og and there in the beginnings. deegan basically is using travis playbook the last ten years. he followed travis into all sorts of racing and other activities.
daaamnnn dude you 100% got everybody. bravo sir, well played. no way i woulda watched either of these videos without that clickbait pastrana video. glad i found it though, this is a great podcast. it's a great way to massage that algorithm. that's a huge part of being successful on youtube and other socials.
Travis jumped his dirt-bike into the bay he lost all his money he won,I don't think if any of the metal mulish guys would have done that if they won the gold.
Travis Pastrana Is an innovator badass on any machine that can kick ass but ultimately a badass on the motorcycle this dude is a legend love how he did his own thing and started a new wave of freestyle crazy this kid has balls the size of Texas !!
Bro the sport would not be where it is today without both of these insane guys. Deegan grew the business and Travis grew the progression. Both are Legends in the sport.
Humble? I’m not sure using a squad of detailed drug addicts to harass and intimidate 14 year old kids is something I’d define as “humble”. The guy is a piece of sh!t.
He wasn’t taking food off your plate . You just weren’t as good as he was/is . and he was sending backflips lol the good guy that could do bigger and better tricks 🤷♂️.
Dude shut up. Carey hart sent a backflip, travis followed. He’s great, but human, and was better, but the rivalry made people watch. How’d he do in nascar? He’s nasty on a bike, but he’s human. They’re all good in their own respects.
@@ave0828 Bro it was just a joke. He sounds high when he is legit laughing. Don't take it personal my dude!! Glad to hear you know he's personally SOBER!! 😂😂
It's so badass to see your quick commentary on Haiden in the opening of The Deegans videos. You're so right about him. I don't care what he's "givren", he's the one riding and putting in the work.
Travis was just being him himself and not trying to play up some fake character image, the same cannot be said for Mulisha. They hated on him because they had to do tricks TP invented just to be competitive, and the mulisha’s own self-image their egos built up were constantly getting shattered by a straight laced guy who would simply whoop your ass on a dirt bike. The fact that a young man was beefing with a 15 year old kid because the kid smoked him just speaks to fragile ego; hate the guy you’re jealous of. If it were t for Travis, the freestyle hype that got these guys paid and where they are today would never had happened- glad to see it finally get acknowledged
I remember going to a metal festival, and the metal militia was jumping and flipping dirt bikes right there about 150 yards from the stage with everyone rocking out , so dope
to me the real badass back in the the day, was the 1 guy who was ATTACKING the freestyle courses, ripping around the entire time on the pipe, rear wheel spinning , dirt flying everywhere,it was like he was just out for a free ride! while everyone else was putt putting around carefully lining the bike up for the next trick. not that what deegan and everyone else was doing wasn't epic, cause it was! just pastrana was on a different level , he made it look easy, at least for him
I was at the super cross at the LA Coliseum when Dedham won the 125cc main and launched his bike at the finish line .The industry was so mad I remember my uncle hating it cause he was a old school motocross guy .But hey Deegan that was one memory I have as a kid going to supercroas that I will never forget
Don't matter what u think about Pastrana, he was, and is, the gnarliest dude.. Has total disregard for his own well being and always pushed the limits..
As a kid watching these two, I never saw the background rivalry. I just had extreme admiration for fmx at the time and the theatrics involved with it. It was like watching super hero's and villians perform.
agree, right time right place basically and the brand + rivalry is what made the sport. without it i don't think it would of ever taken off the way it did for as long as it has if it was just the Metal Militia.
